Wipers dragging water back from driver’s edge of windshield

First time I’ve noticed but in heavier rains and wipers on the pile of water that the left wiper deposits along the edge of the windshield gets dragged or sucked back onto the windshield partially obstructing my vision.

This is a new car, new wipers and clean windshield without any coatings.

Does this happen on your GTI?

Automated speeding tickets for 3mph over?

A friend was telling me his Dad got a $65 ticket for 38mph in a 35mph in Prospect. All the cameras I’ve read about previously have a 10 mph grace, are there any rules about having to allow a certain amount of leeway?

Kinda fat right now. Not sure how much weight I can lose or gain with a kilt.

How much adjustment is there in a kilt for weight loss (hopefully not gain). I'm 22 pounds heavier than my usual and 42 pounds heavier than my ideal goal. Currently 6' 220 pounds, ideal is 178. This translates into 4-5 inches on my belly button measurement at a reasonable 20 pound loss. I need to order my band kilt to arrive by September/October but I know I need to lose this weight. But it is so hard, I'm really hoping not to gain more and maybe lose 20.

But I'd hate to order a $750 kilt and then have it not fit, either once I lose the weight or if I go up a few pounds before getting motivated.

How much adjustment in inches do kilts usually give? I'll likely be purchasing from USA Kilts, I suppose I could always ask them but you all have been very helpful so far!

White cars - waxes, coatings and keeping shiny

I’ve had a white car before and always found it a challenge to apply waxes and coatings, it is impossible to see where you’ve applied and polished paint.

Those of you with white cars, what are you doing to keep them shiny?

On my new GTI I’m planning on doing Griot’s 3-in-1 ceramic spray after a wash, a decontamination and a polish. Not quite ready to spend the bucks on a pro doing a ceramic coating.

First oil change at 650 miles. Check engine light came on, and oil sensor not working yet.

Edit: 2026 VW GTI S Mk8.5 with 650 miles. Topside oil change.

I pulled the dipstick plug and used a VW Audi dipstick and put in the same amount of oil, maybe shy a 100ml or so to ensure I didn't overfill. This is on my first oil change, topside through the dipstick tube, didn't change the filter, pulled 5.5L. Put about the same back in, dipstick looks good. Put the plug back in, since I've had issues in my prior Porsche Macan getting engine lights... which was fixed at the dealer by removing the "aftermarket" dipstick and returning the dipstick tube plug into place.

Well, same thing happened to my GTI except this time with the plug replaced. I have a check engine light, though I haven't run my scanner on it yet to see why. Any thoughts on why I'd get a check engine light - which the manual says that light is an engine misfire. Code is: P006800 MAP/MAF Throttle Position Correlation. Which seems unrelated to anything I touched in the oil change.

Also how long does the oil sensor take to start registering the oil level? I've only driven the car until it just starts getting warmed up, registering 135degF or so. Do I need it fully warmed up before it'll start giving me an oil level display? (edit2: I got the oil sensor working, just needed to get warm enough and sit for a few minutes)

Left the Macan family this weekend

Paid all the depreciation, almost $40k in 3 years, so one lucky new owner could get a peach of a crossover SUV.

I just couldn’t deal with the Porsche maintenance costs even at an Indy and the poor driving dynamics of the Base model. And no way was I springing for another $15k to get into an S.

Went back to a GTI and am super happy to be in a hatchback again. Fast enough for me also.

And here I was wondering who Nick was. 2026 GTI S setup...

I spent a while trying to figure out why the help/tips screens in the car were referring to Nick. E.g. Welcome back Nick.

It turns out I didn't provide a name for my vehicle in the MyVW app, the Nickname was blank and I think it was using "Nick" as a placeholder instead. Not exactly robust design but still kinda hilarious that here I was looking all over for driver profiles and who might have been driving my car in the 142 miles that were on it before I got it.

Lost a tooth today. Ugh

Cracked a tooth today on the side. Doesn’t show unless I’m big smiling but still this hurts and isn’t going to be good. I took terrible care of my teeth as a kid and young adult, that set the pathway I’m on apparently. It probably doesn’t help that I’m eating too much sugar.

In my late 20s got serious about flossing and had a bunch of tooth repairs done, been seeing the dentist every 6 months too. All was good since though 30 years later those repairs are apparently starting to fail.

Jordi's new product the reed tester works well, with some hemp to adjust the fit

I must admit I bought the new bagpipelessons.com reed tester after watching Jordi's most recent video. And I'm very happy that it has made the process of balancing the drone reeds with the chanter reed quite easy. In about 1/2 an hour I had all 4 reeds coming in at the right pressures and cutting off appropriately using the adapter and his pressure gauge.

What wasn't explained properly was the need for hemp to fatten up the various joints to fit into the adapter/tester, so this does add a step. I have about a 2 - 3 foot piece of hemp that I keep unwinding and rewinding onto whatever joint for the reed I'm adjusting and it works well enough but it does add a 30 second/1 minute step, it isn't just plug and play like you might think from the advertisement.

Not complaining. Just advising for anyone else thinking of purchasing.

Where to calibrate drone reed shutoff? Some pressures from my testing

I've been trying to calibrate my pipes and honestly my instructor and friends haven't been able to help me get them as well running as I'd like... double toning, impossible to strike in accurately etc. probably all me but just the same my setup probably needs huge improvement. Bag and joints are as airtight as I can get them, bag is a new Canmore hybrid that stays absolutely stiff for several minutes though my manometer does show losing some pressure over those minutes but I can't tell just by feel. This is on a new set of MacRae pipes.

So, I have an Elliot easy reed that seems to sound at 26 inches, sounds solid at ~30 inches and then goes sharp at 38 inches of water (according to the gauge I got from piper's hut).

My drones are sounding at (outer, inner, bass) 10, 9 and 8 inches before double toning as they build pressure. Then they sound great at 20, 18, and 20 inches. And then they shut off at 35, 33 and 38 inches. Obviously I'd like them much closer to each other, if not exactly the same but these EZ Drones are a pain in the ass to adjust so close enough is where I am right now.

However my high A pressures seem really close to that 30 inches or maybe a tad higher and sometimes cuts off my drones if I get anywhere close to that during a tune. My question is, how close to the chanter reed going sharp should my drones be shutting down due to overpressure? If I make them take more air so they don't shut off due to overpressure, then they tend not to sound during strike in until my chanter reed also sounds. So I'm wondering if I should try to get them to shut down a few inches over 38 inches?

This could also be an issue with my playing, that I should be able to keep steadily at 30-31 inches of water that it takes to make my high A sound and not risk overblowing to 33 or 35 inches.

Is this a playing error, a calibration error, both or something else?
