Is it the marker, the paper, or me?

Trying my new Ohuhu journaling pens and to get solid coverage I did several layers but the paper began to pill (pink cloud on the bottom right and directly behind the dog) so I applied clear gesso to the rest of the image to compare and I like it even less. I have been spoiled by my alcohol markers but I’m trying to revisit other mediums. So tell me what the problem is? The markers, the paper (not great, this is the “It’s the Little Things coloring book by creative Paula), or me? Is there a difference method/ technique? Help and advice appreciated.
