We’re the Rail-Led Communities project team, taking part in FutureTrack by Iarnród Éireann, exploring how to improve the customer experience for passengers and rail users.

What do you do when you don’t get many messages from your post or if it doesn’t work out? Do you post again or just leave it as it is? Genuinely curious and appreciate any advice 😅

Helen Ogbu’s election today as Mayor has brought new questions into the limelight as well longstanding questions about the city council.

Am I the only one who thinks it’s bizarre that parties on Galway City Council can agree a “pact” and simply take turns being mayor?

Parties in the Pact: Fianna Fáil, Sinn Féin, Labour, Independents

Voters elect councillors, but they don’t get to choose who represents the city. Instead, the position of a mayor is often rotated between parties or independents as part of political deals.

Why not have a directly elected mayor and let the people of Galway decide? Like Limerick?

At least then the person representing the city would have a real democratic mandate and could be held accountable by voters rather than party agreements.

For a city facing major issues with housing, traffic and infrastructure, it seems strange that leadership is determined by a rotation schedule instead of a public vote.

What do people think? Would a directly elected mayor be better for Galway?

FYI: Before people come at me for being “racist” or for “targeting” Helen, let me make myself clear it has nothing to do with any of that. Today’s election presented the time for this discussion and that’s it. GRMA

I’ve spent enough time reading these posts, so I figured I should stop lurking and make one myself.

A bit about me:

Working Full-time (finally can afford rent)
Can cook a few meals without needing to consult Google every 30 seconds
Good sense of humour (according to my mam)
Equally happy with a night out, a quiet pub, or doing absolutely nothing with the right person

I’m into music, movies, random drives, exploring new places, soccer, and conversations that somehow start normal and end with “who does the best chicken fillet roll?”

Not posting photos publicly because I’d rather keep a bit of anonymity, but happy to swap pics if we get chatting.

Looking to meet a woman around my age and see where things go. No massive expectations, just hoping to meet someone sound, have a laugh, and maybe prove to my friends that I’m not a third wheel anymore

If there was an app where you can request rides like FreeNow or Tap a Taxi but for carpooling, would you use it?

As a car driver myself, I travel alone most days to Inverin as I can’t rely on public transport for work. If there was an option where I could share the ride with someone I absolutely would and split the cost with that person. I’m sure I’m not the only one, so what do you think? Would you do it?

EDIT: Anyone interested in working together to create a platform for this concept?

The Racism Cllr. Helen Ogbu is getting on social media is absolutely atrocious. It’s being covered up as criticism by the usual suspects. However, it seems to have become the norm and no one really questions it, if they do they brush it under the carpet saying it’s “American bots”.

So I’m asking all of you, is it criticism or can we say what it is which is Racism?

Example from just one post in the comments, there are over 200 comments on different posts since the campaign was announced. Solidarity is needed towards everyone facing this not just Helen. An explanation it’s bots and not “real” people is not believable.

We have seen betting apps, TG4, newspapers and even Facebook pages do opinion polls on the bye-election. It’s time r/galway has its own opinion poll on the bye-election as well.

Vote for the candidate you’d most like to see elected as the next TD for Galway West by ranking candidates in order of preference using the link above.

The poll uses the ranking system, so you can rank candidates 1, 2, 3, etc. Be sure to give preferences to all the candidates you’d be happy to support, as lower preferences can still matter during transfers.

Names of candidates are in alphabetical order to make sure preference is not given to any candidate.

As a person travelling frequently from Galway to Dublin, the lack of a food cart didn’t really bother me as I get on at Galway with shops nearby. However, I do understand it’s much more important on routes such as Dublin to Sligo or Dublin to Westport and for people who get on at stations with no shops nearby.

Is bringing back the food cart on all services important to you?

Making sure that the lifts are working in all the stations is the first thing that comes to mind for accessibility and especially as someone with mobility issues.

If you could change something at the train stations/Irish Rail or introduce something, what would it be?
