Looking for Kia EV3 owners interested in beta testing IONIQ 5 Companion

Hi Kia EV3 owners,

I'm Greg, the developer of IONIQ 5 Companion — an iOS app that reads live data from your vehicle through an OBD-II adapter and puts it on your phone and your CarPlay screen. Version 3.0 is currently in beta, and it adds support for the Kia EV3.

I'm looking for about 15 EV3 owners to help test it.

What I'd ask of you

  • An iPhone, and an ELM327-compatible OBD-II adapter (most inexpensive ones work)
  • Run an occasional test when I ask — a drive, a charging session, a battery warm-up
  • Share any issues you observe, anything that seems out of sorts
  • Send me a diagnostic log from time to time

I'd especially like testers in a climate cold enough to engage the battery warmer. It's midsummer in the northern hemisphere right now, so if you're in Australia, New Zealand, or anywhere else in winter at the moment - your help would be very much appreciated.

What you get

  • You're welcome to stay on the beta for as long as you like
  • A free promo code for Version 3.0 when it's published to the App Store

If you're interested, please send me a DM here on Reddit or an email to the email at the support site — thank you!

IONIQ 5 Companion 2.0 - live on the Apple App Store

IONIQ 5 Companion 2.0 is live on the Apple App Store!

Hello fellow IONIQ 5 owners! Version 2.0 of my app IONIQ 5 Companion is now available on the Apple App Store. This is the biggest update yet — and it's a free upgrade if you already have the app!

A huge thank-you to this community - your feedback, logs, and your patient testing have helped shape just about every feature - thank you!

If you've not tried it: IONIQ 5 Companion turns your phone and CarPlay into a live window into what your EV is actually doing — watch your pack balance cell by cell, see exactly how much power is flowing in or out, and follow the battery's thermal dance during a fast charge. Plug in an inexpensive ELM327 Bluetooth adapter and the car opens up. And half the fun is the community around it: a lot of what the app can read was uncovered by owners poking at their own cars and comparing notes — plenty of them right here in this group!

Here's a list of what's new and improved in Version 2.0:

Vehicle coverage

  • Full support for the IONIQ 5, IONIQ 5 N, IONIQ 6, IONIQ 9 -- and now the Kia EV6 (with Kia EV9 on the way soon)

History & iCloud

  • New History tab records every driving and charging session, with live-updating State-of-Charge charts plus distance, energy, peak power, and battery-temperature ranges.
  • 50+ signals recorded over time — battery voltages and temperatures, motor RPM, isolation resistance, charging power, tire pressures, climate, and more — each with a multi-touch chart you can pinch, pan, and scrub.
  • Per-cell voltage and per-module temperature snapshots captured throughout the drive.
  • Optional iCloud sync keeps your entire history in step across iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
  • Attach a photo to any session and share a clean, branded report card with a single tap.

Charging insight

  • Charging session detail now plots Charging Power, Pack Voltage, battery min/max temperature, and ambient temperature — with bands marking AC charging, DC charging, and preconditioning.
  • DC fast charging: a new EVSE Current chart plots what the car requested against what the charger actually delivered, plus an EV Supply Equipment card showing the station's maximum power, voltage, and current from the CCS handshake.

CarPlay

  • New Power chip: a bidirectional gauge showing power draw and regeneration on one dial.
  • New Compass chip with a heading-up rose, and the option to show it in place of the odometer on the Driving tab.
  • DC fast charging shows three live readings side by side: power Requested, power Supplied at the inlet, and power reaching the Pack.
  • New AC Draw chip shows live volts, amps, and kW while AC charging.
  • New Cell Voltage Δ chip: a mini heatmap of every cell, color-coded by how far it sits from the pack average.
  • Experimental split-screen layout.
  • New setting to jump straight to the Driving tab when your adapter connects.

Dashboard

  • New Regeneration gauge showing how much regen the battery can currently accept and how much is flowing right now.
  • New Gear indicator (P, R, N, D).
  • New Isolation Resistance chip — battery-to-chassis electrical isolation, with an explainer on what the number means.
  • New Cell Voltages info panel explaining the heatmap, the color bands, and what's worth watching.
  • New Polling Headroom indicator showing how much spare capacity your adapter has for more signals.

Connection & adapters

  • Take manual control: connect and disconnect on demand (from the app or CarPlay)
  • Turn Auto-Connect on or off — making it easy to share one OBD-II adapter between apps.

Settings

  • New Keep Screen Awake control: choose whether the app keeps the screen alive while it's in the foreground.
  • Choose your Power units: kW, HP, or PS.
  • Choose your Efficiency units: mi/kWh, km/kWh, kWh/100km, or Wh/mi.

Languages

  • Italian is now available, bringing the app to seven languages (German, Dutch, French, Swedish, English, Spanish, and Italian)

Privacy: no accounts, no ads, no analytics. Your data stays on your device and your own iCloud.

It's $12.99 USD (regional prices vary) -- and a free upgrade if you already own it.

Hello Kia EV6 owners! Version 2.0 of my app IONIQ 5 Companion is now available on the Apple App Store. This is the biggest update yet — and it's a free upgrade if you already have the app.

Looking for 5 EV6 owners with an OBD-II adapter to help me nail EV6 preconditioning detection (iOS beta)

Hello r/KiaEV6,

I'm Greg, the developer behind IONIQ 5 Companion (original announcement here). Version 2.0 is in beta, and I'm working to add official Kia EV6 support. The app trended as high as #3 in App Store Utilities last week.

The ask: I'm looking for ~5 EV6 owners willing to capture a diagnostic log during a DC fast-charging session. The app currently has trouble reliably detecting when preconditioning kicks in on the EV6 (false positives and false negatives), and a few more real-world logs would let me nail it down.

What you'd need:

  • A Kia EV6
  • A DC fast-charge trip planned in the next 2–3 days
  • A BLE ELM327-compatible OBD-II adapter
  • About 1–2 minutes of setup, then ~30 seconds at the end to send me the log

The workflow: Start logging right before you turn on preconditioning → leave it running for the drive, the charging session, and the drive home → stop logging after you turn the car off → send me the file (10–20 MB)

What's in the log: Diagnostic CAN traffic, app state, charging-session timestamps. Your VIN is encrypted with my public key in the file — I can decrypt it on my end, but no one else can. No GPS, no personal data.

What you get:

  • Free beta access indefinitely (constant updates, new features)
  • A promo code for the v2.0 App Store release when it ships
  • Your EV6's data directly shaping how the app supports your car

Drop a DM if you're interested.

(Android folks — version is in development, hang tight.)

EDIT: Fixed link issue

IONIQ 5 Companion — an iOS + CarPlay app for our cars (v1.1 just shipped)

Hey r/Ioniq5,

I’m Greg. I’ve been building IONIQ 5 Companion, an iOS app that works with a Bluetooth OBD-II adapter to create a live dashboard, CarPlay companion, and diagnostic toolkit for our cars. Version 1.1 went live this week and I wanted to do a proper introduction. I personally own two 2024 IONIQ 5’s.

What it is

  • iPhone, iPad, and CarPlay
  • Plug in an ELM327 compatible BLE OBD-II adapter
  • Live readouts: HV pack voltage/current/SoC, individual cell voltages, 12V battery and DC-DC converter health, motor RPM, tire pressures and temperatures, parking sensors (experimental see note below), and a lot more
  • Diagnostic code reader (J1979 crawl)
  • Advanced tools for collaboratively hunting down new signals on cars
  • Helps with planning: The app senses when pre-conditioning is engaged and based on historical charging data, provides an estimate for “Time to 70ºF (21ºC)” for optimal charging performance
  • Languages: English, German, Spanish, Dutch, French, and Swedish

What’s new in 1.1

  • Broader coverage: IONIQ 5 N decoding, IONIQ 6 2023, and low/high-beam indicators for 2025 and 2026 IONIQ 5
  • New CarPlay Tires chip (pressure + temperature) on the Driving tab
  • Expanded 12V chip and a full 12V panel on the Dashboard with DC-DC converter detail
  • Smoother onboarding — helpful if you already have an adapter paired in another app
  • Brake Light Indicator: Off / Red Gradient Background / Red Text (Red Text is the new default)
  • Adapter Quiet Check — passively listens for 60 seconds to detect another app talking to your adapter. iOS shares the Bluetooth link across apps, and a noisy neighbor can quietly degrade scans
  • A friendlier explanation when J1979 reports P0C17 — that’s the harmless drive-motor self-test artifact essentially every Hyundai EV throws

Hardware

You need an ELM327 BLE OBD-II adapter. Tested adapters are listed on the support site. https://www.theburl.com/ioniq-app/support.html

Android?

I know there are a lot of Android drivers in this community. There’s no Android version today. I’ve started looking into what a port would involve. My near-term focus is continuing to build out the iOS app, so I don’t want to promise a date I can’t keep.

Sales model

One-time purchase, no subscription, no IAP.

Experimental

The parking-sensor visualization is experimental on 2022–2024 IONIQ 5s — unlock it by tapping the build number 5 times in Settings.

Thank you

Feature requests, bug reports, and especially logs from cars and markets I haven’t tested yet are very welcome. Thanks again to everyone who has sent reviews, suggestions, and diagnostic recordings — IONIQ 5 Companion briefly hit #11 in App Store Utilities this week thanks to the support from the IONIQ 5 Community.
