Good thing my wife thinks all the full-size guns and K models look alike. As far as she knows, I’m just swapping stocks. 🤣

Left to right:

  • AP5-P
    • Safety Harbor KES stock
  • AP5P-N
    • B&T side folding stock
    • HKP VFG handguard
  • AP5-N
    • SEF lower
    • MKE A3 stock
  • AP5
    • A2 stock
    • HKP wide handguard
  • AP5-SD
    • A2 stock
    • Dead Air Wolfman suppressor
    • Holosun HS407C
    • Leapers UTG extended cocking handle

Oh yeah, FRTs in all except the AP5-P. That one's for the road, and makes travel a lot easier in ban states.

MP5 Tools & Spare Parts: What I Wish I’d Had on Day 0

A while back I posted here asking what tools people recommended keeping on hand for maintaining the MP5 platform. After some trial and error with those recommendations, plus getting five of these up and running, four with FRTs, I figured I'd put together the list I wish I'd had when I started.

Tools I'd recommend having:

  • Bench block puck
  • Punch set (Rennsteig is fine)
  • Holex feeler gauge
  • Small rubber/plastic non-marring hammer
  • Rubber mallet
  • Bench vise
  • Rear sight tool for diopter sights
  • Stainless steel pick set
  • Annie's Arms MP5 Magazine Tool
  • Annie's Arms HK Sear / Hammer Catch Tool
  • MP5 SMG LULA loader & unloader

Not technically a tool, but extremely useful to have hanging in the workshop:

  • MP5 exploded-parts diagram poster

Note: This is obviously in addition to the usual stuff you need for maintaining any firearm: grease, lube, cleaner/solvent, patches, brass brushes, etc., which you likely already have if you're getting into this platform.

Parts I'd recommend buying or at least sourcing on Day 0:

These are the parts that frequently go out of stock right when you actually need them.

  • HK Extractor – MPN 21441
    • No, in my experience RCM is not necessarily "just as good." I thought it was until I personally ran into an extraction issue where replacing the extractor with an RCM part didn't solve it, but installing the HK extractor immediately did.
  • HK Extractor Spring – MPN 206645
    • That said, the FMP HK-contract extractor springs have been indistinguishable from HK OEM in my experience so far. YMMV.
  • HK Ejector Lever, 3rd Gen – MPN 201639
    • Again, based on my experience, PTR is not "just as good."
  • HK Ejector Spring – MPN 200478
    • Same story here. I would buy the HK part rather than assuming the MKE spring is equivalent.
  • HKP Ejector Lever Axle – SKU HKP-20630
    • This is one area where I've found the HKP part perfectly acceptable instead of paying for HK OEM.
  • RCM locking pieces
    • For an MKE, which normally comes with a 120° locking piece, I'd keep 80°, 90°, 100°, and 110° pieces available.
    • For an HK, I'd keep 80°, 90°, and 110°.
    • If you have no intention of shooting suppressed, you can probably skip the 80° and 90° pieces and concentrate on 100° and above.
  • A spare compatible trigger housing if you're installing an FRT or other drop-in trigger assembly
    • If you're going to replace the factory trigger assembly, consider buying another housing compatible with your stock setup and keeping the original components assembled as a complete lower. It makes troubleshooting substantially easier and gives you a quick way to return the gun to a known factory-style configuration when needed.

One point I want to emphasize because I see the opposite advice fairly often:

THERE IS NO NEED TO PREEMPTIVELY REPLACE PARTS THAT HAVEN'T FAILED.

A lot of these are wear items that you will eventually need, though, and several of them have a habit of being unavailable when you finally need one. Buying them ahead of time or getting them on backorder is prudent. Replacing perfectly functional factory parts just because you bought spares is not.

Feel free to add anything I've missed, especially platform-specific tools or parts that you've found useful over time. The goal here is to build the kind of practical reference for people getting into the MP5 platform that we all wish we'd had when we started.

AP5 break-in and troubleshooting process after testing multiple variants

Thought this might be useful to others. As my AP5 collection grew to include an AP5, AP5-P, AP5-N, and AP5P-N, I went through a lot of trial and error separating normal break-in issues from actual parts problems.

After a lot of testing, this is the process I’ve settled on. It has saved me time, ammo, and unnecessary troubleshooting.

The biggest thing: don’t install an FRT until the gun is completely broken in. Establishing a reliable baseline first makes diagnosing problems dramatically easier.

My break-in procedure:

  • 200 rounds of 9mm NATO. If the final 100 are flawless, move to:
  • 100 rounds of standard-pressure 124 gr. If those are flawless, move to:
  • 100 rounds of 115 gr.
  • Finish with another 50 rounds of NATO to confirm everything is still running reliably.

If you encounter failures at any point, stop at that stage and replace the following parts one at a time, testing after each replacement:

  1. Genuine HK extractor spring
  2. Genuine HK extractor
  3. Genuine HK ejector lever

Before moving to the next ammunition type, I make sure the gun completes 100 consecutive rounds of the current stage without a malfunction.

Following this process gives me a known-reliable baseline before adding an FRT, a suppressor, or both.

If you choose a Rare Breed FRT-RD3, you’ll need an ejector lever, ejector lever spring, and ejector lever axle for the new trigger pack. You can pull those parts from the factory pack, but I recommend buying a separate set so you don’t have to cannibalize it. I use genuine HK for the ejector lever and spring, but the HKP axle is perfectly adequate and saves a few bucks.

Doing it this way has two benefits. First, it proactively addresses one of the more common weak points in AP5s, although in my experience only about half ultimately need the MKE ejector lever replaced. Second, it keeps the factory trigger pack intact, making it easy to swap back for troubleshooting, travel to states where FRTs are prohibited, or any other reason.

I eventually bought extra trigger housings for both sizes so each factory trigger pack remains assembled in its own housing. Swapping the entire lower takes seconds instead of requiring trigger-pack disassembly every time.

One other useful point for anyone with multiple AP5s: the lowers are interchangeable within each size.

  • AP5-P and AP5P-N lowers fit the K-sized uppers.
  • AP5 and AP5-N lowers fit the full-size uppers.

Just keep K lowers with K uppers and full-size lowers with full-size uppers.

This process has worked well across several AP5 variants and has made troubleshooting far more systematic than swapping random parts and hoping for the best.

I’m intentionally not getting into locking pieces here. This process is meant to establish reliability in the factory configuration before adding or breaking in an FRT, a suppressor, or both. Locking-piece selection becomes relevant after that baseline has been established and depends on the specific configuration.

Add anything else you’ve found useful during the clone break-in period. Consolidating the proven practices in one place should help the next person avoid wasting time and ammunition chasing the wrong problem.

Compact physical copies of my NFA tax stamps for the range bag

Put this together so I can keep a physical copy of the first page of each NFA tax stamp in my range bag instead of relying entirely on my phone.

Each copy is reduced to about 5" x 4", laminated, and fitted with a 1/4" metal grommet so the set stays secured on a small circular carabiner. All relevant information remains readable.

Simple, compact, and easy to keep with the bag. Thought the idea might be useful to others here. Sharpie for scale.

Edit 1: Since this apparently needs clarification, I’m showing a compact way to carry physical backup copies. I’m not suggesting that anyone hand tax documents to every range employee, RSO, or random person who asks. Whether I produce them would depend entirely on who is asking and under what circumstances.

Edit 2: Wow, I honestly didn't expect this many people to like the idea or want to make something similar.

I also didn't realize until u/thatjkguy pointed it out that National Gun Trusts offers a similar product (a bit larger) for about $16 each. For anyone who wants to make their own, here's what I used:

If you're only making one or two, buying a finished one may make a lot more sense. But if you're making five or more (or just want the laminator for other projects), it's cheaper to buy the supplies and make them yourself.

Panzer HAN-9 FRT: RB's official response on compatibility

I reached out to Rare Breed directly to ask whether any of their triggers are compatible with the Panzer HAN-9. I didn't expect the MP5-specific RD3 to be applicable, since the HAN-9 appears to use something closer to an AR-style fire control configuration despite Panzer's MP5-heavy marketing.

TL;DR: Rare Breed has not tested the HAN-9, but their assessment is that the FRT-15C3 may work if:

  1. The lower accepts a standard AR-15 fire-control group; and
  2. The HAN-9 bolt has the required M16-style rear trip surface in the correct position. Bolt clearance around the cam may also need to be verified.

Has anyone confirmed either of Rare Breed's two stated requirements through disassembly, comparison, or actual testing?

Firsthand photos or fitment findings would be especially useful.

How many MP5s do you have?

Just ordered an AP5-P Navy. Atlantic had their last one in stock on sale for $1,149, so I couldn’t pass it up.

That rounds out my current collection:

  • AP5 (A2 configuration)
  • AP5-N (SD-style with HK Bryce adapter, SD handguard, and MKE A3 retractable stock)
  • AP5-P (B&T UMP-style side folder)
  • AP5-P Navy (will get a Safety Harbor KES once the Form 1 clears)

Curious where everyone else is at. How many MP5 variants do you own?

They just keep multiplying

And this isn’t even all of them. The P238 is just the black sheep of the family. Keeps to himself. Doesn’t come around much. You know how it is.

At this point I’ve got to get these things on some form of birth control.

Left to right:

  • West German P228 w/ Israeli import markings
  • P229 Classic Carry TALO Edition
  • P239
  • M11-A1
  • P226 MK25.

Panzer HAN-9

Seeing as I already have dozens of MP5 mags for my AP5, AP5-P, and AP5-N, I decided to roll the dice on one of these from Atlantic.

They weren’t in stock for long, and I fully acknowledge this could turn into a $500 regret. That said, the Turks have treated me pretty well in the MP5 clone department, and I’ve certainly wasted more than $500 on far dumber ideas.
It arrived today, and while I haven’t had a chance to get it to the range yet, I’m genuinely impressed with the build quality for the money.

Is the brace junk? Yes. Serviceable junk. Comfortable junk. Surprisingly decent cheek weld junk. But still junk.

Assuming it runs with both 115gr and 124gr, replacing it will be the first order of business once the Form 1 clears.

And yes, indeed I have already submitted the Form 1. Cowabunga.

Now the real question: who wants to be the guinea pig and throw an FRT into one of these? For science?

First range session update, 6/19/2026:

  • Blazer 115gr: 50 rounds through two Mora Arms magazines. One FTE and one failure to feed.
  • Blazer 124gr: 100 rounds through one MKE, two Turkish contract (I'm assuming that's what they are; the mags that came with the HAN-9), and one Mora magazine. No malfunctions.
  • Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P: HK magazine. Two failures to feed within the first 10 rounds, so I stopped that string rather than continue burning defensive ammo.

Total: 160 rounds fired, 4 malfunctions.

The gun was flawless with Blazer 124gr across four magazines, including MKE, Turkish contract, and Mora Arms. It was not reliable with Blazer 115gr in the two Mora magazines, and the Gold Dot +P result was unacceptable. My working theory is that it may not like the Gold Dot projectile profile; Hornady Critical Duty may be a better fit, but that will need to be validated at the range.

The MP5 we have at home

Taking a WSB-style gamble on this one. It’s either going to be the best $500 I’ve spent in a while or the most educational $500 I’ve spent in a while. I’ll let you know.

I’ve already got three AP5 variants and enough mags to outfit a small militia, so if this thing doesn’t suck, adding another gun that feeds from the same pile of mags is easy to justify.

Outstanding deal on AP5 right now

I don’t know that everyone knows this yet, but Bass Pro Shops will price match online retailers. If you’re a Club Member, they’ll beat the matched price by an additional 5% when you pay with your Club credit card. Today is also Club Member Monday, so there’s another 10% off on top of that.

TL;DR: you can get an AP5 from Bass Pro today for just over $1,100 by having them price match the same model from Atlantic Firearms.

AP5-N + HKBryce BL-SD + BRT CAR-15 SD = MP5SD At Home

Wanted a secondary configuration for my AP5-N that captured the MP5SD aesthetic without making any permanent modifications, so I could still revert to the classic look whenever I wanted. This was the result.

HKBryce fulfilled the order quickly, despite the BL-SD being on backorder. Five days door-to-door, and he even threw in this nifty little mini MP5SD (see last photo in set) complete with a removable mag. 10/10 experience and worth every penny.

The Broad River Tactical handguard was worth every penny as well. About 10 days door-to-door.

Total cost for both items to complete this alternate configuration, including shipping but excluding the suppressor: about $155. That’s roughly $125 less than the HKParts knockoff.

Suppressor is a Dead Air Wolfman in the short configuration with a 3-lug adapter.

Any questions, feel free to ask.
