ELI5 Logic V12 for "never pay" types

I have a deep investment in Logic Pro, with several hundred live multitrack recordings that go back 8 years, and a learning curve that's been a slog.

I've stopped updating on V 11.2.2

Now, I've seen the notes about backing up the app then doing the upgrade via the store. I know some folks have had disappearing libraries and I have to say, I do so little with libraries and legacy sounds that it will not affect me, but I'd still not like to lose any features that were as yet untapped.

The store is offering V 12.2

Here's some questions:

  • What exactly will be my experience, having purchased the original version some 10 years ago, if I update?
  • Will I be forever assaulted by exciting offers to "upgrade" to the subscription version?
  • Will I lose any features I value now, like stem splitting?
  • Will I never ever see any improvements (besides bug fixes) unless I pay?
  • Will the resulting upgrade install result in a version that sucks up lots more disk space?

I feel a screw job coming on, and it sux because I can't see how to leave Logic without using Logic to do exports. And I hate subscriptions.

Thanks

Help with DNS

SOLVED - A third party (former volunteer) had registered the domain under their own account. An inquiry with ICANN was sent to the (anonymous) owner, and they replied, which was routed directly to me. Now to negotiate transfer of ownership.

The Situation

I'm working with a Not For Profit, and as you might know, with NFP, volunteers and personnel changes, documentation gets forgotten, etc. People come and go, and many are not technical. Best IT practices, documentation and business continuity are about 20 years behind with many small NFP groups.

I'm the "owner" of the SquareSpace account that the NFP hosts it's website on. It's working, it's an operational domain name with an editable site.

The NFP org uses a generic Gmail address as the published contact email on the website.

There is no associated Google Workspace.

The Plan

This NFP is a Town level group that is a part of a County group. The County already has a domain and a Google Workspace account. I want to fold the Town under that County level Google Workspace account as a subdomain.

We will want to transfer the domain name of the Town to the County group for admin and business continuity purposes. This could happen later.

The current project is an email blast system that will include the County and Towns. The system is already operational for the County and one other Town.

Since the Town NFP org I'm working with is using only a generic gmail account, it's not compliant with the blast email system. It's time to change this and create domain based email addresses, and add DKIM, SPF and DMARC records for the Town domain. But it's also time that the NFP had a solid grasp of their digital assets, and how to access as well as manage them.

The WhoIS records show the domain to be registered with Squarespace Domains II LLC, using Google name servers (ns-cloud-a4.googledomains.com, etc).

I cannot access the DNS control panel on SquareSpace, as it says "Access Denied. You don't have permission to access this page." Since I'm the owner, I'd like to know who does have permission, and how I can get access to it.

I've used the Help pages to create a ticket, but somehow I never get a human response, just AI canned stuff directing me to do stuff I can't do.

In short, WTF?

I’m trying to help a friend that just moved to a high end “residence” for elderly folks. Yes, an old age home. But quite expensive, independent living. It functions like a private apartment, and like the arrangement you will find in some apartment buildings, there’s just one service provider that you get internet, cable and phone from.

They have not really moved in yet. I’m coming over to set up the computer and printer, blah blah blah because apparently “tech support” won’t make house calls.

Since their (cell) phone is very portable, they already have walked it over to the “tech support” people at the facility to get it on the house WiFi.

Sorry for the long preamble, but here’s where it gets interesting. I should mention right here that my friend is extremely liberal in their views and choices of news and media.

First interesting point: The facility tells my friend that the cable “plan” only offers Fox News. Period. My friend is not interested in watching Fox News. Ok, I have come to understand that they really don’t watch TV, and are ok with just using the computer. Great news. Many choices there.

Second point: My friend claims that when she is on the internet on the house WiFi, all her “liberal emails” go into spam. She believes that the management is forcing a right wing media bias on the residents.

Now, mind you, I have not been to this facility. I have no idea (yet) what’s going on. While we did have a chat about VPN, which I’m not sure they understood, I’m having a great deal of trouble understanding how the facility could be sending emails they don’t like to spam (re-writing headers?) without being the man in the middle and forcing some kind of proxy on the residents. This sounds very risky from a security perspective, and probably illegal to enforce. But who knows what they agreed to when they signed up.

So tomorrow I will visit. I’d like to be able to determine if they are using a firewall or proxy. If that is true, and the residents are forced to do so, I wonder if they will provide setup instructions. What I’m told is that people from the “cable company“ do that usually.

So my friend is feeling that in order to enjoy connectivity on their own terms, she’ll have to go under the radar, and she doesn’t want to make a big deal about this, especially as a new resident.

I’d like to ask you sysadmins of Reddit if you have ever seen this type of censorship in a residential setting before. If this is the prevailing situation, I may have to engineer a separate wireless 5G Internet setup, which is available in that area, to be independent of the house systems.
