NextLight Prices

For the longest time our internet has been the envy of the front range, but i'm talking to a friend in Louisville who's getting $70 2Gbps service through quantum (and has the option for 8Gbps at $165/mo).

I'm surprised to see that NextLight hasn't come down to those levels - but maybe we'll see a bigger shift once they've paid off the capital bonds in a couple of years.

Photoshop plugin to fix Epson flatbed backlight banding

I've been struggling for a while with my Epson v800 and the way that I get banding that shows up any time I'm scanning a particularly dense negative. It's not too bad on 35mm because the bands are large and easy to edit out, but on large format it's very frustrating.

There are some [fixes](https://forums.negativelabpro.com/t/vertical-alternated-darker-bands-on-120-film-with-epson-v850-staircase-effect/8795/34) that involve adding an extra diffuser to the TPU but I really wasn't excited to take my scanner apart.

Once I realized they were coming from the scanner backlight and had a predictable frequency, I started playing around with python to see if I could isolate that frequency and create an adjustment overlay that would correct it - this turns out to be pretty doable.

I then took those experiments to codex and it was able to turn my half-assed approach into a fairly refined photoshop plugin. It detects the dominant horizontal frequency in the image, calculates a sinusoidal linear light layer that's exactly out-of-phase with the banding and then calculates a mask of where that would need to apply to remove it from the image.

Would love to know if this helps anyone else.

3D Printed AD300Pro Softbox Adapter

The plastic plate that came with my ancient softbox cracked a few years ago, and I’ve tried to 3D print a replacement a few times. The problem with most FDM prints is that the force from the softbox rods tends to make them delaminate.

I recently got a resin printer, so I thought I’d give it another go. So far it’s been really solid and has stood up to multiple assembly cycles without any issues.

You do lose the ability to rotate freely, other than in 120-degree increments. That isn’t really a problem for a square softbox, but it probably wouldn’t be ideal for a strip box.

On the plus side, it’s a lot lighter and less bulky, and because the softbox sits closer to the flash, there should be less leverage on the whole setup.

Rolltop: Self-Hosted Search-First Email

I've been trying for about a year to move away from gmail. I've forwarded all my mail to mxroute but I often find myself back at gmail because the search in Roundcube is awful with a large number of messages.

This app started out just to try and make a slick search interface for an IMAP server but I realized that it wouldn't take too much to build out the rest of the app.

You can self host it on docker

  -e ROLLTOP_MASTER_KEY=QI2H5JebZC1MEohX2T6aYz3OEnNhoE8MUiVw6f2ATnA \
  -e ROLLTOP_COOKIE_SECURE=false \
  -v rolltop-demo:/data \
  ghcr.io/grahamsz/rolltop:latest

Point it at your IMAP server and it'll start building an index of your email. For my 100k email account it took most of a day, but once indexed it can search that in about 250ms (running on my ancient synology NAS).

The master key is just used to encrypt the IMAP credentials on disk, but if you lose that then you'll have to enter them again.

Most of the actual implementation was done by codex, but i'm a software developer with 30 yrs experience and put a lot of effort into designing it in a way that it should be pretty stable and scalable.

(Not sure why my screenshots look so dull here, trying to figure that out)
