When is it too hot to fish?

So I get the theory... Pike should be a no-go in summer (I've not actually targeted them at all in the 7 or so years I've been fishing). Barbel (especially) and Chub struggle to go back in summer if not well rested.

And there's all sorts of infographics out there giving species-by-species breakdowns of water temperature and fish oxygen deprivation.

But for you personally, when do you say "enough is enough" and decide not to head for the banks for inland fishing?

Today it reached 25C here. Wasn't too bad when I first got to the local river (overcast and faintest of drizzle) but eventually warmed up and I'm now sporting a smidge of a sunburn. I planned a mobile day so didn't take a brolly with me, so resorted to finding as much shade as I could (but obviously wasn't enough!). The fish were active, just not interested in eating (I tried luncheon meat, spicy halibut pellet, bread, pickled cockles as an experiment as everyone has been raving about them) but still swam up to investigate loose feed (but again, didn't actually nibble on any freebies). Real shame as amongst the (guesstimated) 3-4 lb chub there were some 6lbers and the odd 8lb+ barbel (which would have been my first).

Anyone else's warehouse flooding from chilled/frozen waste fluids?

No room in any of the walk-in chillers/freezers (ideally I guess it should be frozen down to avoid further spoilage?) so 40+ cages of stuff has been dumped (albeit into the giant cage liner bags) in the middle of the warehouse.

Stinking to high heaven over night (been there since Weds night apparently) so can only imagine how bad it gets during the day.

And apparently the puddle spreading well beyond the cages can't be stopped from spreading because they've run out of the yellow "snakes".

After the night I've had I'm seriously tempted to report it... Just not sure whether to Protector Line, the H&S app thingy... Or go above the company completely to Environmental Health as having literal tonnes of rotting food leaking everywhere inside store premises surely has to be against some rule or other...

Apparently it's not able to be moved til it gets collected on Monday by an external company, so only going g to get worse over the weekend!

Night shift with potential of power cut... what happens?

So we're potentially going to be due for a thunderstorm (hooray!) around 11pm tonight.

Probably won't happen.

But if it does, and the power goes... what happens?

Do the solar panels keep a battery charge long enough to operate lights etc overnight?

Or (as has allegedly happened in the past under other managers) are we just expected to keep working (albeit at a "safe speed") using our phone torches?

Do they corale everyone in the canteen/smoking area away from slip/trip/collision hazards on the shop floor? Or do we luck out and get stood down and sent home early?

TBH not really sure what to expect for tonight. Fresh deliveries look to be "rescheduled" on Inform, which also shows no sales all day on the Frozen lines that I've checked. So already has the potential to be an unusual night anyway.

Fellow Night Shifters, how are you coping this week?

I've had my regular off-days Monday-today and due back in tomorrow night.

I'm hoping with blackout film on my windows (did try using tin foil but didn't get on with it; blackout film arrives this evening from Amazon) and a fan pointed at my bed, that I'll be able to get *some* sleep tomorrow daytime.

Been wearing a neck fan at work the past couple of weeks anyway, and keep my drinks bottle (isotonic drink to combat dehydration) in the nearest chiller.

I've even invested in a pair of shorts (below knee in order to comply with uniform regs) because full length trousers feel like they'd be a no-no.

Anyone else found ways of dealing with the heat? Just hope I don't end up coming down with heat exhaustion like last year, got so bad I ended up going of sick for a couple of shifts.

Hedgehog food as fishing feed/bait?

So...

Saw this at work a while ago, and been meaning to experiment with it.

Not sure if I'd use it as loose feed, on the hook, or soaked and pushed into in a method feeder.

Figured it might be good for if I decide to have a quick after work dawn session (I work nights, stacking shelves in a supermarket) and don't fancy lugging too much bait with me.

Just wondering a) if anyone has used this for fishing and b) if not, but have bought it for its intended purpose, how well it resembles typical coarse feed (coppins etc) pellets.

Composition: Poultry Meat Meal, Wheat, Wheatfeed, Whole Maize, Rice, Poultry Oil, Brewers Yeast, Whole Linseed. Added vitamins and minerals.

Analytical Constituents: Crude Protein 25.0%, Crude Oils & Fats 12.0%, Crude Fibres 3.0%, Crude Ash 6.0%

Not being any form of nutritionist, aquatic or otherwise, I'm not sure what to look at... Seems a decently high protein. Poultry base makes me think it might not be the smelliest on its own (I'm sure adding a glug might change that) but at the same time if hedgehogs recognise it as food when it doesn't resemble their normal snails/worms etc. then it must have some "mmm smells yummy" about it?

Recommendation for outdoor tap kit

Howdy

We live in a council property and are due to have our kitchen refurbished (end of life) in a month's time.

We've had a little chat with the crew doing it as they've recently been in doing next door. They have agreed to fit an outside tap (presumably directly from the line feeding the kitchen cold tap) as long as we provide the "kit" (tap, fittings, isolation valve etc I guess) (I'm also gonna chuck a crate of beer their way as a thank you because it's not part of the kitchen).

I know from prior experience the "saddle" self-cutting kits are prone to failure, so want to make sure we get a decent kit... But all I can seem to find are these "DIY" ones .

Any links to a full kit of supplies please?

Well... That was definitely one of my better "first session of the year" sessions!

I headed out fairly early (for me) to my local club water, the sometime renowned Throop Fishery on the Dorset Stour.

Yesterday I prepped a can's worth of cubed bacon grill, and smothered it in chilli powder overnight as I know from previous experience the fish are quite partial to spicy meat.

But also, having an inkling that maggots are likely to be most similar to what the fish have been eating the last few months, I also took 2 pints of mixed white and pink with me. Aim was to start on the maggot feeder and get some competitive feeding going before transitioning to the meat to try and pick out bigger fish.

I normally get plagued by minnows when using maggots, but not today.

I kid you not. First cast, and had a chub smash the bait as soon as it hit the water. It only stayed hooked (or rather, on the line) for a matter of 10 seconds or so before it snapped the hook off, breaking the knot (I blame my laziness/eagerness for this... I was using a hook to nylon rather than tying my own; should have known better than to trust someone else's knot!). Still, technically "first cast, first fish" even if it didn't make it to the bank.

Over the next few hours I had tonnes of activity in the swim, loads of nibbles and takes, and landed a ~4lb chub and ~1/2lb roach. All on maggot, had absolutely no interest in meat whatsoever (I'm guessing this early in the season, the fish don't remember bait/feed as being a food source?).

Then I decided on a move, seeing as the Mill Pool was empty of anglers (which I wasn't expecting on Day 2 of the season). Stuck to the maggot feeder, must have landed 10-15 roach (none shorter than 4 inches) but also three much welcome bream... As you can probably tell from my photos, I definitely need a bigger net (and one preferably not still stinking of snot slabs despite much rinsing) - I honestly wasn't expecting to actually catch anything like the size of fish I had today. In all honesty, total weight of fish caught was the most I've ever had in a session, even if none were PBs.

So yeah. Hopefully this wasn't a one-off and instead is a sign of good portents for the season to come.

Here's hoping everyone else yet to venture out on the rivers this season also has productive sessions!

What are everyone's plans to see in the new river season?

I shall be going out on Wednesday (I've got family commitments so can't be there for Open, despite the local club stretch being available from midnight with a Night permit).

But yeah. As I try to do early on, a bit more of a roving session rather than sticking in one spot so I can see what changes there have been, figure out good spots for more static sessions further down the line... And no doubt having limited swim options because it can get pretty busy .

Gonna just use my "old faithfuls" baits of spiced bacon grill and maggots, either link-leger or with a light maggot feeder - with hopes mainly of chub and roach.

Anyone else got particular plans?

Working a night shift going into my birthday...

Have decided that in order not to depress myself too much I'm not going to class it as my birthday until 6am, seeing as I couldn't book it off (we're so short staffed that only 2 people are allowed to book off at a time).

And if I have anything left to do come 6am, I am NOT offering/being sweet talked into staying on for 30 mins because screw Tesco, life is too short and they e not done me or any of my colleagues any favours recently - on the contrary we are close to a whole team burn-out.

To anyone else who worked Meat and Poultry last night... Pats on the back all round!

31 delivery total. Me (primarily a BWS/grocery bod) on my own for most of the night (I'm not brilliant at meat, possibly the most inexperienced/least able... But there was no other choice apparently) with someone jumping on from 4am to do pre-prepared and BBQ (80% of which was overs anyway after I'd done back stock earlier in the night).

I do not know how the f*ck I managed to complete (minus face up, as it was already being torn apart by Dot Com and customers alike at 6am sharp). Probably couldn't do it again if I tried. Apparently it was heavier than the worst night over Xmas (when they had 2 people doing it all night) so I'm feeling extremely "unalive" at this point!

But yeah, I'm imagining everyone else had a heavy one too (even if your BH Weekend isn't also the same weekend as the biggest local festival). About the only time we can get away with saying "I beat meat at work"!

First Tesco ARM after a week off with Flu... Anything I should know?

I work 3 nights a week (plus OT as and when). Week before last I went home a couple hours into the shift due to blocked ears causing me balance issues, and ended up taking the rest of that week off with full blown Flu.

Got handed a letter last night "inviting" metro an ARM on Sunday. I'm a union member (and our Rep is one of the genuine good ones) so going to get her to sit in with me.

Should be an open and shut case - prior to this my last sickness was last August, so I'm thinking will just be a First Absence Warning?

Anyone else waiting for 21st (bonus pay day) then considering jumping ship?

Literally, it's all that's keeping me going at this point. Night shift (indeed the whole store/company) is going from bad to worse, and if I'm brutally honest I don't want to be stacking shelves for the rest of my life...

This payday will be my 2 year anniversary, so it's not like I've not given the job a fair shot, but I'm getting to the point where it's physically and mentally breaking me, and NO job is worth that.
