Isolating valve positioning for bathroom sink and shower

Hello

I am refurbishing my bathroom and the next step is the plumbing of the sink and shower.

Due to the limited available space, would it be a good idea to install a pair of isolating valves to isolate both the sink and shower lines (Option A in the diagram)?

Or shall I try to go for a more standard layout as shown in Option B of the diagram?

Thanks for your help

Should we stick with builders who cut the pipe? (UK)

Having bathroom renovation. Day 1, the demolition. guy came (no English at all). Accidentally nicked a hot water pipe under the floor. This guy had zero idea about how to turn the water off, how to drain the tank, how to stop the leak.

He ended up not closing the cold water, but draining the system from the magnetic filter. Got him to turn the water off eventually. Was it wrong to use the magnetic filter?

His manager said he would come and fix the pipe tomorrow.

Should we get someone else in or see if these guys follow through?

Ended up paying for a taxi for the guy to get home.

Stuck trying to disassemble tap

My kitchen tap dribbles for some seconds after turning off. I've been advised to remove the cartridge to either clean or replace but I can't seem to move the white plastic outer part in the picture. Should it unscrew anticlockwise? I've tried everything and it won't move. Thanks!

Should this turn all the way flush?

Hi,

Ive recently installed a shower and wanted to double check something. I have an overhead shower and have noticed that when the water is set to hot, there is a slight pressure job from the overhead shower head, whereas when you turn the temperature cold again, the pressure goes back to full blast again.

Is this normal, and is this range of motion okay and got anything to do with the hot water pressure being a bit lower? I've attached photos of how the temperature valve looks at each extreme of the range of motion - I've been told at each extreme it should turn to be flush with the rest of the setup?

TIA!

Button flush stuck down

Hi, flushed my toilet tonight and it’s stayed down and is continuing to fill cistern. It’s quite an old toilet 10-15 years and it’s never done this before, hoping someone can help me? Thank you!

Installed new sink trap but not lining up with existing outlet pipe

Hey everyone.

I decided to install a dishwasher and did the cold feed easily enough, swapped sink waste to a mcalpine wm11 to have dual appliance waste spigots,.but unfortunately after installing it's a bit out of alignment. Just wondering what would be the next best step here?

Should I get some sort of flexible 40mm pipe or?

Just wondering before I go to Screwfix!

How long should system boiler & unvented cylinder service take?

Have a wb 8000 life and kingspan unvented cylinder which previous owner installed at the end of 2023.

Chap was done in under an hour. Also noticing for some weird reason when the hot water is on, my radiators are now getting hot which was never happening.

Update - thanks all. Was the valve in the wrong positon as you all said. Appreciate the help!

Siamp Optima 50 flush cable

I'm trying to replace the flush cable, but the bit where it's supposed to connect seems to be broken. Any ideas on how I can get it to stay in place?

Combi boiler pressure spike

I've checked our boiler pressure today and it was at 3 Bar! I've bled the radiators and it's back at 1.6bar, however I wanted another opinion as to whether this was a random spike or if I should get an engineer to come check it out.

For context: we have had the filling loop replaced maybe 3 months ago and at the same time the expansion vessel was refilled as it showed 0 psi, it was refilled and it had no leaks. Since then the pressure has been fine, of course it increased a bit when we were away for a week when it was 36 degrees here everyday, but since then it's been the same level about 1.4-1.5 bar and I've been checking it basically everyday. Then today I checked it and it was at 3 bar, it's been hot here again recently but not so hot that it would have doubled in pressure. I've bled the radiators again and i am going to be keeping an eye on it again. Do you think this was a spike, or do you think something has failed and I should get an engineer? Or keep an eye on it first to see if it does it again?

Worth noting the boiler is nearly 10 years old.

Any questions let me know

Thanks you

Pressurising hot water system.

We recently bought our first house, it's lovely but the hot water system pressure is abysmal! The previous owners had a new boiler installed a few years ago and when they asked about a combi boiler, they were told the house was too big???? Seems like bullshit to me, it's just a two floor 4 bedroom.

Anyway, I don't want to replace a perfectly good boiler, or replace the cylinder so after some research, it looks like my only option is a whole house pump. The two showers are pumped, so there's an electrical feed already there. There seems to be two large cold water tanks in the loft (plus small header tank for central heating), both working, although I haven't traced the pipes yet to see if they're connected together. Also, all the cold water is mains pressure, including the cisterns.

It seems to me this would entail fitting a single sided pump, along with the special flange to stop it sucking air, taking out the shower pump and bridging the pipes, and hey presto, pressurised hot water. I know how to join pipes and connect electrical items as I've done a bit of building and house renovation work in the past. Do you think I'm missing anything? (Apart from the possibility of leaks in the system but I think it looks up to the task).

Any advice from plumbers or anyone who's had this fitted to their houses would be welcome.

How would you deal with old 140mm toilet waste pipe?

This is my first bathroom renovation and its got me so wound up! I've ripped out my bathroom where previously the pan connector was sealed into this old 140mm (I'm assuming asbestos or iron) soil pipe. This modern pan connector is far too high for my new toilet (first pic) which I was expecting. The original toilet was just placed on a piece of mdf to bring it up level.

The old pipe is quite a thin but very rigid material. I've been googling all evening for adaptors for this but all the ones I've seen seem to be for reducing 110mm to smaller pipes, not a far larger one. Then there's finding a pan connector to connect to the adaptor without ending up very tall like the original problem. I'm prepared to have to cut the pipe down a bit to make more room but before I do, any suggestions what the hell I should do?

Split a feed and drain for a dishwasher and washing machine.

moved into a new rental. I want to run a dishwasher and a washing machine but I only have one feed and one drain. I'm pretty sure I have the drain part worked out, a y piece, a 45 and another piece of straight tube, although I don't have the tools to measure the pipe diameter and I'm sure one of you will know just by looking.

The one I'm struggling to work out is splitting the feed. I just scrolled through everything on Screwfix website and didn't see anything that looked like the right thing for the job.

TIA

Manhole on Private property

Can anyone identify this manhole and tell me whether it’s my responsibility or the water company’s? Somebody fell down it. And he has filed a claim.

What is this thing found in cistern?

Found this piece of plastic in the cistern of my bathroom, where it was jammed in the flush valve, holding it open. It’s about 10cm long. Removed it, toilet now seems to work fine. Checked the other toilets, can’t see a corresponding piece in there. Is it actually part of the flush mechanism, or a bit of rubbish that was left in there when the toilet was installed? TIA

Salamander Homeboost will help?

My current system boiler :the boiler itself and the unvented cylinder is downstairs on the ground floor but my shower upstairs in the bathroom is very low pressure.

I've been looking online and seems like this is the best way to go up pressure.

Any suggestions otherwise?
