Rewriting the Boys Season 5, Episodes 1-7

This is a long one.

Many of us have been unhappy with the Season so far. I've seen a lot of good ideas in the community about how it should have gone, so I wanted to put something together that reflects the season we wanted to see.

The biggest complaint is the pacing - we spent too much time searching for V1 and focusing on Soldier Boy, the Vought Rising Prequel, and on low-effort jokes about who Soldier Boy f*cked in the past. We can still do that - it just needs to be much less.

The second biggest complaint is that nothing has really happened - Homelander got V1, killed the President, and killed Frenchie. But what about scorched earth? Where is him actually killing a protest full of people, or leveling a city?

And the third biggest complaint - what's going on with the humans? The world in the background? How are others reacting against Homelander? Have all the Starlighters in the world given up?

So here is my attempt to fix the pacing - using some of what I think has worked well so far in Season 5, along with some of the community's ideas. Where things fall apart is Ep 8, so I'd love input from the community how they see things ending up in Ep 8.

Episodes:

5x01: (Pretty much the same)

  • Hughie, Frenchie, and MM have been living in a freedom camp for the better part of a year, each losing hope in their own ways.
  • Homelander attempts to draw out Starlight and Butcher using the deaths of Hughie, Frenchie, and MM.
  • Butcher becomes aware of the plan – he warns Kimiko and Starlight, warning them both. Starlight fails to recruit A-Train at first.
  • Butcher, Starlight, and Kimiko break into the Freedom Camp – they finally rescue Hughie, Frenchie, and MM. MM kills Love Sausage.
  • A-Train prevents Homelander from killing the Boys – Homelander chases down and kills A-Train in exactly the same way.

5x02:

  • Now with the Boys back together, Butcher shows them that he & Samir have finally perfected the Supe Virus – it’s ready for testing.
  • Homelander, lacking for father figures, awakens Soldier Boy and manages to recruit him to hunt down Butcher for revenge.
  • MM is saddened about the death of A-Train and helps get A-Train’s family members to safety at the Philly Safehouse (a safehouse of human Starlighters, protected by the characters of Gen V).
  • Homelander finds another one of the Starlighter hubs (not Philly Safehouse) and kills every single person there on a rampage, looking for Starlight or Butcher.
  • Soldier Boy finds and confronts Butcher and the Boys while on a mission – they give him the Supe Virus…but it doesn’t work.

5x03:

  • The Boys are now aware that the Supe virus doesn’t work against Soldier Boy because he has V1. MM in particular becomes sullen and angry, losing whatever remained of his hope.
  • Homelander learns that V1 will protect him from the Supe Virus and dedicates all Vought resources towards finding that.
  • Sage uses Homelander’s relationship with Clara to pit Soldier Boy and Homelander against one another – she manipulates Soldier Boy into thinking that HE could become the leader of the Seven – as long as he helps to ensure that Homelander never finds the V1. Soldier Boy goes rogue, leaving Homelander.
  • The Boys go to confront Stan Edgar in his bunker, learning that Stan is bunking with both Zoe and Maverick (Translucent’s son). The Boys learn about Fort Harmony and Bombsight (leads for V1) and Project Odessa (concerning Marie).
  • Homelander sends Deep, Noir II, Cindy, and Dogknott to recover Stan Edgar – they successfully do so. Hughie reckons with killing Translucent while he is forced to fight and finally kill Maverick himself.  Starlight gets a certified W by killing Cindy to protect Hughie.
  • Zoe, who wants to kill Butcher for having killed her mother, follows Frenchie & Kimiko to the Boys hideout, learns that Samir is still alive, and turns him against Butcher – the two run off and escape.
  • Butcher finds Ryan meeting with Zoe and tries to recruit Ryan, officially telling Ryan about Homelander raping Becca. Ryan, unsure how to process this information, flies off again to ponder next steps.

5x04:

  • Homelander learns about Fort Harmony, Bombsight, and Project Odessa from Stan Edgar, becoming worried about Marie Moreau. Homelander finally tracks down Marie & the Gen V cast at the Philly Safehouse, and he sends members of Teenage Kix to handle things with Dogknott & Firecracker.
  • Soldier Boy wants to find and destroy V1; he confronts the Legend about where to find Bombsight and is told to ask Mister Marathon and Malchemical in LA. Soldier Boy learns from Marathon & Malchemical about Golden Geisha – she still lives in a retirement home in LA.
  • Soldier Boy, Marathon, and Malchemical kidnap Golden Geisha to draw Bombsight out. Soldier Boy depowers Bombsight and takes the V1 from him. Soldier Boy initially wants to destroy the V1, but then realizes he could also use it to find someone to spend life with him, so he hides it.
  • The Boys struggle to find decent leads on Bombsight or V1, so they instead focus on a plan to recruit Marie Moreau.  At the Philly safehouse, Hughie and Starlight both reunite with their mothers, and MM reunites with his family and A-Train’s family.
  • The Boys check in with Marie and the Gen V characters – they get the full briefing of Thomas Godolkin and Gen V S2. However, Marie refuses to go against Homelander and insists she’s more comfortable helping Starlighters get to safety.
  • The Boys thwart a Supe attack at the Philly Safehouse. The Boys handle Teenage Kix, with Butcher killing Jetstream and Kimiko killing Sheline; MM spares Countess Crow and lets her leave.
  • Starlight has a rematch and a final one-on-one conversation with Firecracker. Firecracker wins, fatally wounding Starlight and killing Starlight’s mom. Marie uses her powers to kill Dogknott; Firecracker becomes terrified of Marie and flees. Marie uses her healing powers to save Starlight.
  • The Boys (MM) become convinced they can use Marie to either hold Homelander in place or fully pop his brain. Marie is terrified to go up against Homelander, but changes her mind and agrees to do so. The Boys think they should test Marie’s powers against Soldier Boy first.
  • When Homelander is at his most upset, Ryan finally confronts him with the information from last episode, about Becca’s rape. Homelander denies it, but insists he doesn’t need Ryan because he’ll be immortal soon. The two fight, with Homelander beating Ryan and leaving him alive.
  • Thousands of folks attend a Vought Shareholder meeting. When the footage of flight 37 is leaked to the public (not by our Boys, but by a similar group of disgruntled Starlighters), some of the crowd become scared and try to flee.
  • Homelander impulsively kills everybody in the stadium, to prevent this from leaking to anybody outside (though people are still livestreaming). This finally destroys Homelander’s reputation and gets a portion of his own fans to become scared of him and turn against him.

5x05:

  • After Ryan’s failed fight with Homelander, Butcher finds him alive and brings him to the Boys hideout. He officially recruits Ryan to the Boys, and starts to bond with him over Butcher’s dog Terror.
  • Butcher wants Ryan to help kill Homelander (and Soldier Boy), but Ryan needs to heal up; he is too powerful, so Marie isn’t able to heal him. MM and Hughie advise Ryan to sit this one out, which makes Ryan angry. MM tells Ryan about his personal vendetta with Soldier Boy this ep.
  • Homelander faces backlash for his actions at the Shareholder meeting and has Firecracker use her news network to spin the story, blaming AI and Starlighters. Homelander becomes upset upon learning that he’s losing supporters online – some are even becoming Starlighters.
  • Homelander also has Ashley & the President deal with the pushback of Flight 37 & the Shareholder Massacre. When the President attempts to push back and insist that he’ll use the might of the Pentagon and Congress to go against Homelander, Homelander kills him.
  • The Boys track down the Legend and learn that he helped Soldier Boy get to Mister Marathon and Malchemical. They learn from the Legend about Soldier Boy’s backstory at Fort Harmony – helps set up Vought Rising.
  • The Boys create a plan to draw Soldier Boy out – they intend to lead him to Fort Harmony and ambush him with Ryan, Marie, Jordan, and Cate (Cate has to be convinced to go up against her childhood crush).
  • The Boys learn that Marie can’t pop Soldier Boy, but she can hold him in place using his blood, preventing him from activating his Power Blast. Cate questions Soldier Boy, learning that he hid the V1 for himself to give to a potential lover. While Soldier Boy is held in place, MM finally confronts him for his grandfather’s death.
  • Ryan disobeys the groups' orders and flies to Fort Harmony anyways, sensing they could need help. Ryan confronts his grandfather for having tried to kill him in S3. After learning that Marie can’t kill Soldier Boy, Ryan offers to do so for MM. Marie continues to hold Soldier Boy in place, while Ryan lasers him in half.
  • Homelander learns about Soldier Boy’s movements. He kills Marathon and Malchemical, and learns from the Legend that Soldier Boy obtained V1 and kept it for himself in a hideout. Homelander visits Soldier Boy’s hideout and finds the V1 for himself. He arrives just before the Boys do – they witness him inject himself and escape as he’s convulsing on the ground.

5x06:

  • After Fort Harmony, Frenchie gets an idea - the Boys collect the equipment and enriched uranium necessary to recreate Soldier’s Boy Power Blast that the Russians gave him – Frenchie decides to start looking into this solution. The new plan is to use Marie to hold Homelander and then use Kimiko to depower him.
  • Sage finally abandons the Seven and defects to the Boys, deciding to help them take down Homelander. She and Frenchie work together on the math for the correct dosage of radiation to give Kimiko. They execute the process – Sister Sage insists it’s successful, but they’ll want to test it first to ensure it works.
  • The Boys, Ryan, and the Gen V characters return to the Philly Safehouse, where they hope to give Kimiko enough time to recover. Frenchie tells Kimiko that he officially wants to settle down with her and have children. They share a dance to “Dream a Little Dream of Me.” Meanwhile, Hughie and Starlight bond with Ryan, who reacts to having killed Soldier Boy.
  • Homelander now has the V1 and is at an all-time powerful. However, he mourns the death of Soldier Boy and is angered to learn that Ryan is now helping Butcher and the Boys. Homelander now no longer has need for Stan Edgar and finally kills him; Stan Edgar dies not knowing if Zoe is safe or not.
  • Ashley, now serving as President of the United States, tries to see what resources the military have at their disposal to deal with Homelander. She learns that the military has developed several potential solutions, but that most of them proved impervious against Homelander during testing.
  • Firecracker experiences a crisis of faith when Homelander recruits her and Oh-Father to convince the public he is God. Firecracker and her news channel works together with Samaritan’s Embrace to prepare a televised ceremony. Firecracker abandons her faith and decides to fully commit to helping Homelander and Oh-Father.
  • While the Boys bring Kimiko and Marie to Samaritan’s Embrace, Ryan is told to stay at the hideout with Terror. Ryan instead goes out and reconnects with Zoe, meeting her father Samir. Ryan updates Zoe on everything that’s gone on, expresses his doubts, and gets advice from her.
  • Meanwhile, Frenchie is told to bring Sage into Vought Tower – they will collect and destroy all remaining samples of Compound V in the labs. At Vought Tower, after successfully destroying all the V, they are caught by Deep and Noir II. Noir II brings Frenchie and Sage to speak to Homelander.
  • The Boys bring Kimiko to Samaritan’s Embrace as the ceremony is being prepped. Kimiko successfully uses her new Power Blast to depower Oh-Father, but she passes out for a bit afterwards. Starlight has a rematch with Firecracker – thanks to Hughie distracting Firecracker, Starlight is able to kill her, taking revenge for the death of her mother earlier in the season.
  • Homelander returns to Vought, thanking Deep and Noir II for their success. He interrogates Sage, learning that the Boys’ hideout is in Erie Pennsylvania and that Kimiko has Soldier Boy’s Power Blast. Homelander confronts Frenchie. After Frenchie insists that Homelander has never danced a day in his life, Homelander punches him in the gut, killing him.
  • Homelander takes Frenchie’s corpse to the Boys’ hideout in Erie. He finds Butcher’s dog Terror, who attempts to hump and bite Homelander. Homelander ends up stepping on Terror, killing him. After placing Frenchie’s corpse on the doorstep, Homelander destroys the hideout and the Supe Virus (what’s left of it), ensuring the Boys can’t use it or any of the equipment inside against him.

5x07:

  • Kimiko and the Boys mourn the loss of Frenchie and Terror. Butcher in particular seems way too far gone now - even though they now will use Marie and Kimiko against Homelander, he still wants to release the Supe Virus.
  • Homelander learns from the news that a coalition of Starlighters from the Philly Safehouse have been caught attempting to smuggle people out of the nearby Freedom Camp. It was a massive overtaking, but now the entire city of Philadelphia has put up anti-Homelander posters – they’re coming for him.
  • Homelander meets with President Ashley, getting more details of the protest and giving her orders on dealing with it – he tells her to send Supes in to kill the Civilians. Ashely, having learned that the military can’t kill Homelander, finally grows a backbone – she decides to try and read Homelander’s mind. However, she’s not strong enough, and Homelander can sense this – he kills her.
  • Homelander publicly assumes the presidency, in addition to finally announcing to the public that he is God (though he decides he doesn’t need Samaritan’s Embrace in order to accomplish this). When Secret Service members try to run, Homelander lasers them on live television.
  • Homelander travels to Philly himself; for fun, he levels buildings, entirely devastating the population. Afterwards, he gets back on the news at the White House – he tells people that, as long as they are loyal, they have nothing to fear. This is how he’ll be handling with dissent in his new regime.
  • The Boys and Ryan finally go to the White House to confront Homelander and the Supes still supporting him. Starlight finally kills the Deep, taking revenge for her sexual assault. The Boys team up to kill Noir II, while Ryan handles a bunch of miscellaneous supes, ensuring that Kimiko & Marie remain protected on the way to Homelander.
  • Marie uses her blood-bending to hold Homelander in place. Kimiko depowers Homelander. Butcher finally confronts the depowered Homelander, taking his time with the torture. He does his scene from the comics – opening up Homelander’s brain and squashing the chunk of Homelander’s memories of the night with Becca.
  • To cap Homelander’s life off, Butcher steps aside to let an emotional Ryan finally confront and kill his own father. Ryan refuses to do so – showcasing his humanity and decision to stop fighting, now that they’ve won. Instead, Butcher rips Homelander in half, finally killing him.

5x08: (My lazy attempt)

  • Butcher reveals he has one remaining vial of the Supe Virus, and intends to release it.
  • Hughie, Starlight, and the Boys team up together to depower Butcher and take the Supe virus from him.
  • Butcher tries to kill the Boys – Ryan, although he made the decision not to kill Homelander – kills Butcher to protect the Boys. Or maybe it's more fitting for Hughie to kill Butcher, I just don't know how he'd do it.
  • The new President of the US announces a stabilization effort – abolishing the camps, and ensuring Vought is held accountable. Thanks to Frenchie, all remaining Compound V is destroyed.
  • Dealing with the fallout of the destruction of Philly, finalizing storylines with Hughie’s mom, Starlight’s mom, and MM’s family.
  • Hughie, Starlight, Kimiko, and MM work as part of a government effort to rehabilitate Supes???
  • The main characters bid goodbye to the Gen V characters – going forward (Season 3 gets written in my world), the Gen V storyline will be about ensuring rogue supes get rounded up and handled – and anyone looking to fill the Homelander power vacuum.

RUN (The Boys Found Footage)

Well this would be terrifying. I hope that SOMETHING like this happens in the series. Doesn't look like we'll really get it with two episodes left, but would have been nice.
