Education in Nagaland

Education is one of the key foundational pieces to any settlement in today's world. Primary education is mandatory in roughly 90% of the world's countries. That means, you'll most likely meet more people who are educated compared to those who aren't. That's what the numbers say, at least.

In reality, it's not uncommon to see a young person who didn't receive any proper education, especially in Nagaland. While it is law that primary education is a mandate, there aren't much enforcers. Department of Social Welfare, Child Protection Services, Child Welfare Committees, Nagaland State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NSCPCR), Nagaland Council for Child Welfare (NCCW) seem to not be as spread out as expected of them. Of course, they probably have many different roles with each to their own but it is something to note.

##The Quality of Education in Nagaland

Being born and brought up in Kohima, I've relatively had a very high quality of education, from the age of a babe to my graduation. I'm a fortunate soul to have had some very passionate teachers who cared more about the quality than the quantity of what they imparted. I am forever grateful to those beautiful and kind shapers of the future. However, not all are going to be as fortunate as I had been and for that, I wish to speak my thoughts.

Nagaland has two always present things in every class: a box of chalk and a chalkboard. Is it really though? The "blackboard" I grew up with was a raised platform of cement that's was just painted black. There was nothing special about it. I don't know the scene now but while I was growing up, schools had three things in common: the blackboard, the chalk and memorization. I grew up in training a training field for factories. The idea of comprehension was crazy enough that the teachers who promoted it looked like revolutionaries at the time. I'd even heard of some schools which had teachers who wouldn't award marks just because the students didn't write answers word for word in their exams. Call me weird but that's not what education should be.

Education is all about shaping minds! It's about shining more light to those eyes that are full of wonder, those eyes that are slowly seeing the world unfold itself to them. Yes, primary education is all about literacy, high school is to train the minds of the children to understand concepts and higher secondary is definitely for understanding and grasping concepts enough to choose a career path before college. In college, the learners must be trained and prepared for the career choices their streams will give them.

My criticism for education in Nagaland is that we are so backward, especially now, more than ever.

###What should be done?

Q. What should educators do?

A. Be up to date with everything. Trends, memes, pop culture. Your job is to shape them and to do that, you need to connect with the minds of those whom you teach. I've heard many educators say "I'm coming down to your level" like it's some favour. No, you signed up for this. You SHOULD come down to my level because your knowledge and wisdom far exceeds mine and I'm the one being taught. You can't expect to connect with your students if you don't understand their minds and what makes them click. You need to be willing to get into their mindset to see through their lens and connect with them on a very deep level.

When I talk to younger people, I try to connect with them and find out their interests so that I can make analogies of difficult topics with examples taken from their interests so that I can have them understand it. If I, a 25 year old graduate can do it, why can't you highly qualified professional do it as well? It is no hurdle.

Q. What should educational institutions do?

A. Upgrade, upgrade and UPGRADE. Go from blackboards to screens, from screens to AI assistants. "I have given you the rooms" is not enough anymore. Invest in the children and their futures! You can't lay back anymore like this.

Yes, one major setback for educational institutions is the money. A school or college is a business, and unless you're a wealthy saint, you're not going to invest crores into something that will potentially only bring in losses. It's a leaky faucet, to say the least. I understand that most schools would either always break even or net a loss every quarter. While that is understandable, it's so much more important to invest more in the quality.

Q. What should the NBSE/Departments of Education (including Higher Education and SCERT) do?

A. Promote digitalization with a foundation, provide subsidiary schemes for that, make a deal with network providers to subsidise the cost of data plans for the schools for a set number of years (the foundation to the aforementioned digitalization).

And generally, giving out digital copies of lessons would make more sense in terms of efficiency and referral as well. Obviously have the students take notes on their notebooks and have physical textbooks but I'm rather sceptical of notebooks without a locker system in place.

###Why should it be done?

For one, visual learning is the META (Most Effective Tactic Available). Audio visual learning is even better. Children now are growing up with visuals that RETAIN attention. For example: If a school had a Hailuo AI plan, they could EASILY ANIMATE with it and help children learn. Lesson plans will become fun and interactive with the use of AI as a tool. Some people may refer to an older post I made about AI and why I'm against it but even there, I've said that it's okay to use it as a tool.

Second, the more fun you make classes, the more students you'll have. That means more cash flow. But don't let greed overtake anything and keep the fees consistently affordable according to the lowest income bracket of the local population.

Third, when children are engaged, they will innovate, they will imagine and they will inspire. They will also score higher marks. Know what that means? Better pass percentage so that your school can keep your reputation high.

Fourth, digital literacy is now just as important as linguistic literacy. There is no loss in imparting more knowledge to the younger people.

##The youth are the leaders of today.

Train them well and they will lead the country well.

The Loss of Another Torchbearer

Adinno Z. Phizo (c. 1932 – October 8, 2026) was the president of the Naga National Council (NNC) and the eldest daughter of Angami Zapu Phizo (A.Z. Phizo), the founder of the Naga independence movement.

She passed away at 8:00 PM on October 8, 2026, at Bethel Hospital in Kohima, Nagaland, following a brief illness at the age of 94.

She was formally elected president of the NNC at a general meeting held in Kohima Village Hall on May 12, 1990. Her leadership was reaffirmed at the NNC General Meeting held at Longmisa village on March 14-15, 1991, which was attended by more than 6,000 Nagas. At the meeting, political plenipotentiary power was conferred on her by Zashei Huire, president of the Federal Government of Nagaland.

One of the many leaders who was regarded very highly among our people and respected by many. May she rest in peace despite knowing that the vision that they saw has not been realised.

Safety or Danger?

Recently, the news of our own sisters being harassed and abused got me wondering: would self defense items help?

I've met a lot of people throughout my life, as one does, and I've been thinking about self defence tools lately. Now the obvious pro is that women would be able to protect themselves.

The CO2 BB gun? It will work if shot in the face, in the ear, between the legs, the neck, throat and just randomly throughout the body too.

Pepper spray isn't illegal so you can make them at home too, although it won't be propelled through the nozzle like a deodorant and more like a perfume, it should still work if aimed at the face.

A telescopic baton? That should definitely do wonders as long as the build quality is good enough. Anyone can hit anyone with a stick.

Here's where the "meeting people" part comes into context though: I've come across some women who are not all there in the head. Some of them have very poor emotional control (they usually have high androgen levels). Those are the ones I fear would handle the weapons well, understand them and use them in a not so self defense way. Physically they would be overpowered by men if they're without weapons but will they be just as dangerous if they were donned with weapons?

This isn't a gender war thing, btw. I'm just putting things out there, the way I see it. Freedom of speech and all.

Genuine question

How do we make them understand that we don't have good experiences with their people and that the stories we've heard are not helping their case either? Is this racial? Probably. What isn't?

I'm honestly a xenophobe. I don't want them mixing with us. That's just my genuine feeling.

Why can't Nagaland get the good things?

I straight up took this pic from r/assam and op is getting flamed for not knowing who Gorillaz is.. my point is, why do we keep getting only the washed up, rinsed out artists and bands and our sister states get all the hottest stuff? 😭

Akhrieze and her new single

This is crazy to see. A Naga musician's songs are being distributed through Universal Music India?! A lot of artists want to reach this level of being seen.. I'm absolutely flabbergasted that this is the kind of level we're on now!

Nagaland and It's Witness Protection Programme

Under the Witness Protection Scheme, 2018 and the BNSS, 2023 Section 398, states are under a statutory mandate to ensure that witnesses are protected.

Nagaland is a small bubble; a well, to be more apt about it. Everyone knows everyone and it's hard to trust the enforcers of law (I've heard real life stories of police rejecting justice) with information and leaks. What would be your suggestion? Let's say you're the SP and you want to ensure that you spend the least amount of money while still upholding the mandate. What would YOU do?

FNTA: What Comes Next?

First of all, congratulations to the ENPO for finally having their demands met. It's nice to know that the parable of the persistent woman rings true in any age and it is my deepest wish that the development you seek will come to you with unblinking and relentless haste.

Here's the real question: will the creation of the Frontier Secretariat take at least a majority of the currently backlogged posts from the current Secretariat? I don't need to express much on it, as it is what it is. I dislike the fact that there is a backlog system in place at all. I'm not saying it's a bad thing to uplift one another, it's actually a great thing; however, civil service exams were supposed to grant equal opportunities to both the layman and the aristocrat in the first place.

I don't have anything against reservation. I, myself, enjoy the advantages of the ST quota. What I have a problem with is the backlog posts blocking out and crushing a lot of hard workers who are running on short candles.

I've read the bill that was passed and it does not explicitly mention anything about what I asked, besides transfers and rules of employment.

I know it sounds like the ravings of a person who is unhappy about everything in life but it has been a burning question in my mind ever since the first talks and the info on a new secretariat to be set up in the FNTA region.

What is your opinion on the matter?

I DO NOT WISH TO START A FIGHT. PLEASE BE SENSIBLE AND ACCEPT THAT THERE WILL BE DISSENT.
