Returning after ~6 years: peaked around 1070 MMR in 2018/20, currently 945. What should an old player focus on?

I’m an EST. 2015 player who recently came back after roughly six years away from actually playing seriously.

Back in my original run I peaked around 1070 MMR in 2s. I came back on August 10 mostly just to play with friends, but Rocket League got its claws into me again. My return started around the low 900s, dropped into the 800s while knocking the rust off, and I recently peaked at 945 (D2 Div III).

I’m not trying to grind back to my old MMR or make Rocket League a second job. Mostly I’m curious what experienced players think translates well from old RL and what habits from that era tend to hold returning players back.

My game sense/positioning has come back much faster than my mechanics. I’m comfortable with basic recoveries, half-flips, aerials, etc., but modern wall/backboard play and controlling awkward touches are where I notice the biggest gap.

The biggest improvements I’ve noticed recently have actually been pretty simple:

• slowing down/matching the ball’s speed instead of racing into every touch

• making 50s more deliberately instead of just trying to “win” them

• challenging high as first man specifically to leave something collectible for my teammate

• thinking more about what the next touch will be rather than whether I can touch the ball now

For people who played both old and modern RL: what would you tell a returning 2015-era player to keep, and what would you tell him to unlearn?

Not really looking for a giant mechanics checklist. I’m more interested in how the decision-making/meta of 2s has changed.

Could this work as a new ceiling-shot setup?

Shower thought:

Come off the ceiling with your flip and meet the ball around crossbar height while descending. Get slightly above/behind it and front-flip into the upper quarter of the ball, basically punching it hard into the ground.

The idea isn't to score that touch. The ground rebounds the ball while you're still completing the front flip, and you try to reconnect with the ball near the end of the flip to shoot it forward.

ceiling, front-flip spike, ground bounce, same flip reconnects, shot.

Has anyone seen/done this? I'm nowhere near mechanical enough to test the ceiling version consistently, but I'm curious whether the timing actually works.

If one of you mechanical freaks can make it work, please post the clip.

Finally feel like a real industrial player

Been savaging in the vulture for a long time now. Just upgraded to the moth. And i have to say that argo makes me really feel like an industrial player vs. A scrapper. I dont know if that even makes sense *shrug*

Wild opinion.

I don't bother with issue counsel or bug reports. So I don't complain about bugs because I am absolutely not doing my part to help the dev team diagnose the issue.

Salvagers this one's for you

Looking into savaging as the next industrial loop to jump into. Since my in game purchase choices are the fortune and volture. (Reclaimer out of budget) which is better and why?

Also is hull scraping for rmc worth it or should I just remove components and fracture? Can one fracture larger ships than the other?

Good bag for the rust society set?

The armor doesn't include a bag looking for something that is purchasable in game thatwould match/look okay with this set. Currently running it with the argo bag.

My self imposed role-play rules as a cargo hauler/trader

  1. Always change into clothes before leaving the ship in cities.

1.1 If visiting multiple cities in single session wear different outfit at each city. The previous set is dirty don't be gross.

  1. Armor and weapons stay stored while flying.

2.1 Seperate flight suit on board completely different set for the armor.

2.2 Armor is only worn at "open air" deliveries.

  1. You're a hauler and family man. If there's trouble, defend yourself and run.

  2. Sit down and enjoy your meals.

4.1 variety is the spice of life. Get something fresh at each stop.

  1. Trash goes in trash cans.

5.1 don't hesitate to pick up other people's trash. Leave places better than you found it.

  1. Walking is natural. Running is for when you're in danger.

  2. Your ship isn't perfect. Inspect before take off.

  3. Under 300km no qt.

Those are the basics for me i always try to plan my trade routes so I visit a city at least once in a play session. Its definitely not efficient but i enjoy playing this way.

Anyone else have random self imposed rules they follow? I would like to see some things i may have missed.
