finding an apartment in toronto is demotivating

i’m looking to move to toronto in nov or dec. i’ve been looking at units with a realtor since september. i’ve seen 4 units so far and put in applications for 2. both applications were denied.

i have a great credit score, i’m offering 4 months of rent upfront since my job is a contract, i have solid references, i’m a non-smoker, non-drinker, and have no pets. i want a 1bd unit for $2300 or less within 20 minutes to st. andrew station.

the layouts suck. the price you pay and the unit you get doesn’t seem like a fair trade off. the building management is poor. older buildings have pest issues or old appliances/amenities. the landlords have weird rules in their documents, such as a $300 cleaning fee, having to notify them if i have guests staying for over 72 hours, repair fees for appliances. sure, i could agree to them but those rules aren’t legal or enforceable! but if i don’t agree to them, it makes me a weaker applicant.

i am just so demotivated. nothing i like is within my budget and if i do apply, i get denied. good units end up leasing before i can even schedule a viewing. i’m a commuter, so moving to toronto is supposed to save me a lot of time and headache. now if i could only get accepted for a rental…

please share your success stories or any advice!

cut back on the sugar!

first photo is from this week, second photo is from february 2026. i’m 24, 54kg, and 5”1 for reference.

i’ve had a “south asian belly” that i’ve been trying to get rid of since summer 2023. i started lifting weights, i tracked calories, ive been in multiple cuts, i did cardio, i did ab & core workouts. i don’t drink (alcohol, soda, energy drinks, coffee) or smoke. i also rarely eat fast food.

i even worked with a dietician who suggested i go on a caloric deficit of 2kg (4.4lbs) and do no carb dinners. i tried that for 2 months and i did not get the results i wanted nor was it sustainable.

then, i went on a 2 month trip to nepal where i wouldn’t restrict what i ate and the only physical activity i did was walking. since ive come back, my sweet tooth has nearly disappeared. i believe that the food i had there (whole, savoury, different flavour profiles) completely diminished my need to have a “sweet treat” to feel satisfied.

i still crave sweet food, but i find most of them too sweet, so i don’t end up having much. this has also helped reduce my cravings. i much prefer savoury and umami food now.

the result? my stomach is flat. i havent worked out in 4 months, so i barely have abs. the first photo is in the afternoon after i had oats for breakfast and a snack.

i also don’t get as bloated as i used to, even after eating a full meal. i am beyond happy that i have the stomach i’ve worked towards for years. it’s also a great base to get the abs that i’ve been wanting for forever as well. i’m also glad that im exposing myself less to sugar related issues (diabetes runs in my family).

these are my suggestions if you also struggle with a belly

- sometimes we eat sugary foods because of the dopamine we get - ask yourself if food is a source of comfort or fuel for you. can you resort to something else when feeling sad or stressed?

- substitute for healthier options - i prefer 75% dark chocolate over milk chocolate, i have honey with black tea, i have sugar free iced matcha, i have sourdough bread over white bread

- delay the sugar fix - sometimes having a banana and water can greatly reduce your cravings

- you can’t out work a bad diet. you can’t be in a deficit forever. you need sustainable habits.

- fuel your workouts properly. when you work out, your body uses glycogen. this triggers your brain and body to eat something to replenish the energy - usually a sweet fix. i avoid these cravings by eating properly before lifting, drinking lots of water everyday, and having something ready to eat after.

- it’s also a mental game. sugar is addicting and it’s everywhere. im learning to soothe myself or to keep delaying my cravings until i eat something else or until the craving goes away

- it might be hard at first but the more you exercise your discipline muscle, the easier it gets

i hope this was of help. feel free to DM me if you still need help or have questions :) no weirdos though!

brampton needs a matcha place

i personally love matcha, thai iced tea, and other specialty east asian / south east asian drinks. why are there no cafes in brampton that sell them?

there’s The Cups that opened recently in downtown, but parking is inconvenient.

i’m so tired of only having chai places and bubble tea places available. i either have to go to mississauga or wait until i’m in toronto.

looking to move to toronto

looking to move to toronto

hello all.

I’m 24F, no kids, & looking to move to Toronto end of this year (nov, dec). I work in non-profit in the entertainment district. I know it’s early, but i’m looking for neighbourhood recommendations based on my needs / lifestyle, what to know in the process, tips, etc.

  1. won’t need a car
  2. close to amenities like gyms / fitness studios, groceries, transit
  3. ~30 min commute with TTC
  4. my income is $4300/mo and i have an 800+ credit score. i’d like to spend less than 50% on rent - possible?
  5. close to greenery / parks / nature. the lake is nice too, but i assume apartments along the lake would be much more expensive
  6. in a quiet (ish) & safe area
  7. i won’t have a roommate

i am also working with a realtor from fox marin - is it better to work with multiple realtors ?

thank you!

is thamel safe in the day time?

hello all.

i’m (female) staying in thamel (near paknajol) for 4 days before my flight. my sister and i are both nepali and i speak nepali.

i’ve heard there’s pickpocketing, heavy night life, and rowdy people.

we will be out in the day time only to visit salons and shops. we don’t drink or club so we’ll be back in our room before sundown. my parents are also nepali but they only hear bad things / old stories about thamel. i want to reassure them that we’ll be safe given our itinerary.

bringing food from nepal to canada

hello all.

i’m travelling from kathmandu to hong kong then toronto soon. my family asked for some food / ingredients. most items are commercially labeled, sealed, with pride and weight written.

i also have ghee, honey, rice, and some sort of syrup made from peaches from my mamaghar. they’re not labelled (the honey is sealed but no label). how can i being this food to canada without issues? i know people typically wrap it in clothes and put in the luggage but i don’t want it to be confiscated or be fined.

i looked into courier services but they don’t ship food. i asked ON way and they said id have to pay taxes in canada.

thanks

lack of civic sense and its implications abroad

i was born in Nepal & moved to Canada in grade 3. I’m currently visiting for two months. I was aware Nepalis have different social habits compared to Canada and other nations before coming.

however, for a group of people that talk so vocally about how Indian tourists lack civic sense, Nepali people also lack it! i’ve seen people litter, cut others in line, interrupt others’ conversations because they don’t want to wait, stand in the middle of busy aisles and streets, shove others instead of saying excuse me etc.

these behaviours extend to when Nepalis go abroad. i live in a city where we got a lot of international students, with a good amount of them Nepali. i’ve seen them take calls on speaker in public, litter, play music on speaker, cut people in lines, don’t follow traffic rules, and have loud parties late into the night.

it’s also worth mentioning how much anti-Indian rhetoric Nepali people engage in abroad. Many countries value and celebrate diversity and people are expected to treat others with respect. When i see Nepali people say racist stuff towards Indians and others, i’m frankly embarrassed & it erodes the identity of the country they migrated to.

this behaviour corrodes the respect residents have for new immigrants, international students, and other established immigrants. it also reflects badly on the country itself.

a common rebuttal i see to these discussions is that “indians are worse than us.” people abroad see south asians as a whole - they don’t care if you’re indian, nepali, pakistani - the see all of us as brown people and that we don’t have civic sense.

i really hope there is top down change to have public & frequent garbage bins, fines for littering, people movement management, proper trash disposal. i also hope Nepali people look within, do better, & hold each other accountable before thinking of themselves as superior.
