Latest Apple TV update is great

Reading the poor experiences in this forum, I was prepared for disappointment when I realised the Apple TV 4K app in my wife's apartment in the city had been auto-upgraded. I've invested several hours of trial and error with the router and Hurricane Electric to get ipv6 remote streaming to our main house (Starlink) working well.

Wow, was I surprised. When I launched the app, it almost immediately displayed my library. Thinking perhaps that was all cache magic, I selected something we haven't watched in ages and started play. Again, the response was almost immediate and showed flawless streaming of a 4K video file.

Before this update, there would always be a very annoying delay of several seconds before showing the library or for play to commence.

Well done, Plex team. The UI changes seem fine to me, also.

IP v6 support works great now. Up yours, CGNAT.

Thank you, thank you to the plex team for implementing ipv6 on PMS and ios clients (though must enable in the app: Settings > Advanced > Include IP V6 Connections"). I realise this is only for PlexPass at the moment, but hopefully it will roll out to everyone soon.

I've tried so many crappy workarounds over the years to overcome CGNAT impacts to remote streaming. It's now trivial to get this working and stream very high bitrate video.

Feature request: Dash widget to disable/enable Carplay

I won't permanently install the dash until I can find an easy way to disable Carplay. With Carplay enabled and not even used on the Dash's active screen, it insists on re-connecting wifi. This prevents use of an in-car hotspot (like my Starlink mini).

So, please provide either:

  1. A new widget that toggles Carplay on/off

  2. An option to automatically disable Carplay if there is no Carplay widget on the current screen.

Automating home sysadmin tasks

I see lots of people here using various LLM's (local and cloud-based) to augment their automation capabilities, but I see only one that mentions automating the home sysadmin tasks. I'll share my recent experience and hope it's not a duplicate of any recent post.

I have a Mac Mini running node red, influxdb, grafana, mosquitto (mqtt broker) and several scripts managed by pm2. I recently moved Home Assistant to a "HA Green" appliance. I've wanted to clean up the Mini for some time, so recently bought a used HP desktop PC running Ubuntu to house most of these packages.

Claude Code did the research, created a migration plan, test plan and recovery plan. It installed and configured Node Red, InfluxDB, Grafana and mosquitto. In the process, it needed to upgrade InfluxDB, as my version was too old to have binaries available. It migrated all the relevant data without a hitch. It diagnosed and remediated some linux networking issues. Having key-based ssh auth into the linux box and then passwordless sudo eliminated any need for me to copy/paste.

This saved me so much grief. I've done this type of migration before, and it's really tedious. Not this time and never again without an llm sysadmin.

Claude, create doco to help recover after failure

After adding yet another docker container to my 920+, I realised I had invested a fair bit in getting everything working perfectly and would need to spend many hours recovering, should the NAS fail in a big way. I'm backing up critical data, but that is the bare minimum.

I'd been using Claude Code recently so asked it. "i would like you to analyse the configuration on my synology NAS at 192.168.2.133. the objective is then to create documentation that would allow me to recover from total failure. the information i'm interested in is configuration of every docker container/image, DSM apps installed, camera configs, DSM configuration of storage and other key bits. questions? recall you can ssh from may macbook into the NAS at 192.168.2.133 without a password."

After a few back and forth iterations, I now have a document that explains exactly how to recover every docker container and much more. We made a few adjustments to the running configuration to make recovery easier. Doco can be updated with a single script.

I highly recommend this approach if you haven't already documented your setup.

Remote volume control for Lyngdorf amps

I hope this is an acceptable topic-- I figure anyone with a Lyngdorf amp is here. Mods will correct me if this isn't OK.

I love my TDAI-3400. I love the sound, the aesthetics and the physical controls, especially the volume knob. The remote control is functional, certainly, but lacks a certain something.

Enter the wonders of the Waveshare battery-powered LCD "knob". You may have seen this little beauty elsewhere. It runs $54AUD, is well made (CNC-machined aluminium) and feels like a high quality control. With a little help from Claude Code, I now have a really functional volume control with a display that shows currently playing artist, track, album. Rotating the knob changes volume and there are both mute/unmute and play/pause "buttons (icons)" on the display. If I'm using a streaming source, everything works. If playing vinyl, of course the now playing info is missing, but the volume control and mute still works.

There are similar projects using this device, but the ones I found had a dependency on yet another docker container. I didn't want that complexity. If you happen to have a Lyngdorf amp and want a dirt-simple volume control, this may be it.

Check it out at GitHub - svwhisper/lyngdorf-knob: ESP32-S3 firmware to control Lyngdorf TDAI-3400 via the Waveshare knob display. For $54AUD and 2 minutes of work to download the pre-built firmware to the device, I reckon it is pretty sweet. Make sure you order the knob with the optional rechargeable battery.
