PSA - Fact Checking !!

Mods I hope this is allowed. Delete if not.

I feel the need to bring attention to this, while it is not necessarily overtly dangerous, it can still be harmful and detrimental to individuals and the tie-dye community in many ways.

Recently I was inquiring to a person here on reddit some in-depth questions about their methods and processes, as they had some beautiful results of a certain design that I was interested in achieving. I got some lengthy advice, and while I noticed that not much of it applied to my situation, the specific advice that person was giving was irrational, as in it was unnecessary and/or contradictory to the proven data of the science behind tie-dye when one desires to achieve proficient results. The specific claims this person was offering as truth just didn't make any sense, and when I voiced my concerns/ called them out, they appear to have blocked me. I'm not sure if I should list the specific it that raised my concerns, as irresponsible as I think that is, it doesn't deserve a witch hunt or any any backlash to this person for a public shaming which could affect their business and their livelihood.

I know there's a lot of newcomers to the community who are just starting out and learning and have lots of questions, and I would hate for someone to end up disheartened or discouraged from continuing to pursue their passion and joy through this artform just because they ended up wasting precious time and resources to be steered down the wrong path of information. When receiving advice I implore everyone to do their own research as well from trusted sources and gather multiple inputs if they can to avoid the spread of misinformation.

Thanks for reading, hope this is at least helpful to create awareness on proper techniques fand at most could save someone a lot of frustration. Standing up for the truth is important to me and happy dyeing 💫

Some recents..

The last one perished in flame; we had a house fire. Everyone is fine and no major damage, but still feeling very displaced and unsettled.

All folds are original design.

Whoever is driving those super loud cars around Glen Allen...

Wish they'd stop, really not a fan of having my ptsd triggered and my poor animals becoming scared at the unnecessary revving and whatnot. Is there no appropriate place anywhere for cars to do that away from a populated neighborhood?

Today's washouts...

I'm not getting the definition in my mandalas that I would like to see... I've watched countless YouTube videos and either I'm missing it or it's just not sticking in my brain.. if anyone has any tips or pointers or tutorials they can link me to, specifically on wrapping string placement, I would appreciate it very much!

My friends wanted matching sets so I finally made a summer lounge set for myself ! Jazzed to find cotton stretchy shorts with pockets!

Uhh... that's a bird.

I just got rid of the faces... now a bird shows up. Great. 🤦‍♀️ some kind of falcon, or eagle even. Mmk. Time to focus on mandalas, last pic is most recent.

Hey, can I ask something a little different of y'all... I'm really struggling with where I'm at and what's happening in my life right now and I was wondering, for those who don't mind sharing, what are some things or non-things ( thoughts, concepts, mantras, etc) that makes you feel better when you're super low or having a really hard time? Would really like to hear what helps other people lift their spirits or at least calm and/or soothe themselves when things get rough. Also I don't know if this is allowed but I'm alone for most of my time day and night and it gets lonely so if anyone wants to talk about anything my DMs are open. If not allowed, please disregard. Thanks in advance friends. ♡

I was going for X's...

Not mad at the squares though.

I think this is one of the coolest things I'll ever make. It's approximately 40x80 inches cotton cloth. I'll probably use it as a quilt backing. This was hung up and photographed wet especially unwrapped, but I've included a couple dry washed photos folded up. I'm so impressed with the vibrancy.

I don't remember what colors I used. I'm sorry 🤦‍♀️ highly likely turquoise for sure and then I think maybe amethyst... I don't know what the bit of green is though. Some green lol

I soak in very hot tap water & generous soda ash for hours, I usually forget about it before I wrap. DUI in the muck, almost always 🤙 Pariah the wrap with approx 140°C water to flush out excess dye and set colors, esp turquoise, then hot water mini soak/wash with synthrapol all throughout the rinse, alternating with cold water until it runs almost clear, then ran for a quick cycle on hot water in the washing machine with synthrapol. Wham Bam thank you modern science and also shout out to my landlord who after only once did I mention, not even complain!!, that the house had lost hot water for one day and it ever so slightly mildly inconvenienced me, cranked up the hot water tank so I don't have to use boiling water for my hot water irrigation. It comes out the tap really fucking hot 🥵 like way too fucking hot. 🤣 "this'll shut her up"

I am that snoop dogg meme right now.

" I'd like to thank me for all my hard work. I'd like to thank me for showing up everyday. I'd like thank me for never giving up."

But for real, I would like to thank this community for all of its support and encouragement and just general willingness to be helpful and go above and beyond for all the newbies and experienced dyers alike.

My first successful Mandala. Other than the edges looking like I tied them with barbed wire, and the general lack of definition in my lines, anyone overhearing me unwrap this would have been concerned with the amount of stern exclaiming of expletives coming from the bathroom. ALL of that turquoise was on the inside so I got to open up this beautiful blue geometric suprise. I'm still vibrating off of that high, bouncing around. It's a good day.

Bout to mess up this shirt...

If you haven't considered using a needle and thread to secure your pinch points when you're folding a garment for tie dye, may I cordially invite you to be open to the suggestion because, and as much as I absolutely loathe this phrase with my entire molecular structure, it's definitely a game changer. Even typing that makes me want to burn down an orphanage, like, disgusting unbridled rage foaming at the mouth angry it makes me. Any psychologists in the house??

Anyway, purposely included the entire shirt in the photo frame because I just threw that bitch down on the table and look: it practically folds itself. It's almost spot on my markings with zero adjusting made. My ghasts have been flabbered.

And anyone down with the hemostats? I've double coated plasti dipped them so they don't rip my shirt. I saw a tutorial and knew I had to try some kind of mandala flower with them, but I really like the idea of not having to be limited or restricted to tying sinew around two different ends of a marking. Like if I only want one strip in the middle of the fabric, now I can do that. It doesn't have to be a circle. Jazzed. ALSO, I got them on temu for about $3 each. So that's about $30 Canadian for 10 pairs which is dirt cheap. They're like $12 each on Amazon. Screw that. I practically live at the dollar store and watch. Next time I go they'll have hemostats 😂 they always do that to me, whenever I find something and I purchase it elsewhere with sales markup, I always end up seeing it at the dollar store for significantly less.

Threw in some pics of some of this week's washouts as well. Not terribly thrilled with any of them, especially the last one with the screaming turtles. I. Want. Perfect. X's. \tantrum

I invented a new technique...

It's called "The Rage Dye" and all you have to do is get really frustrated and not being able to get clean smooth folds, bundle up your shirt into a stupid little ball, angrily and extremely haphazardly wrap the ball with sinew in no particular fashion or pattern in various tightness , dramatically slam dunk it into a container, dump way too much dye powder in random clumps all over the top, grab some ice blocks from the freezer to wrap them in Ziploc bags with packing tape to go smash outside on the steps in front of the neighbors and their frightened children, cut those open and dump on top of the wretched abomination in front of you, then storm off to go be miserable for the rest of your day. Oh, and make sure you're swearing the entire time or else it won't work. Bonus points for temper tantrum trashing your bathroom/dyeing area in the process. Front and back of shirt shown.

Btw I got some new ice dyes from Dyespin and I feel like I'm cheating on Dharma 😂 these are Mind Bender x, Firesphene, Mint Chip, Candypop, Dreamy Night, and Actias Luna in no particular order. To be honest, I'm absolutely shocked that this didn't turn into a dumpy pile of mud re: application lmao. You bet I left that dumb shirt to soak in its own filth. (Dyed in the muck) Can't tell you how long I batched it for but I use the pariah method to initially rinse it out because I'm impatient.

Addendum: I'm a bit confused at what point to use synthrapol, I usually do a small hot bath of it after or in between rinsing with cold water, obviously hot machine wash with it after but I'm concerned with applying it at the most appropriate point to prevent backstaining and keeping those whites super white. I failed to do so in this garment. Please any insight would be appreciated.

Shoebill stork

Almost full size completely handmade from scratch, even the eyes.. sewn with minky fabric. It was kind of a rush. So sorry I didn't get any really good photos. Not bad for my second large custom plush. This one went to a friend in the next province over.. I think I'll make another one.

If you have issues with dye bleeding and haven't looked into synthrapol...

Please get some!! I bought it on Amazon(Canada) for $20 and it's going to change my life. I could never dye red or pink pigments without the color bleeding and staining any and all white near it, even with my best attempts at isolating the area with cold water rinse, but I did a little 5ish minute container bath with approx one tablespoon ish (I don't measure) synthrapol after I saw the white starting to turn pink, and it removed any dye from the white areas and look how bright and clear the whites are!!!! Sorry I'm just so jazzed to use red again without ruining the entire shirt 😭

Really struggling with the glitch fold...

Can anybody give me any pointers or hints or tips on why I can't get the definition? 😟 Do I need to be tying it a certain way before adding dye? All the tutorials and my practices have been somewhat loosely wrapping the fold so that it stays in place. Too much dye? Help a girl out, I don't get it.

Triple deity roll

Sorry for the wonky photo, my bathroom lighting is abysmal 🫩 this was a fun one. Triple deity roll on a mirror fold, DUI (dye under ice) on an incline, half ice dye half Pariah/HWI (hot water irrigation) batched cold in the muck roughly 12 hrs or less cuz I'm impatient before the method switch.

Trying new design ideas...

I thought these were a loss tbh, I fumbled my setup pretty hard as in literally dropped everything, clumsy. I usually try to batch for 24 hrs minimum but I don't keep track of anything.

1st & 2nd photo: I mirror folded the tank top and then did a very chunky horizontal fan fold, then very haphazardly threw dharma powder dye on top with big chunks of ice over it, adding more ice over time, don't even remember what colors I used sorry, mentally a mess. I see a Zubat at the top. First time trying for the x effect, this was in the muck.

3rd photo: mirror folded spaghetti strap top, was trying to play around with the fold to make an eye of my design. Turned out better than I thought it would.

Only been tie dyeing for about 2 months or so. Cheers

I call this one.... Shibari Goofy.

If I had to have that intrusive thought in my brain that ruined a part of my childhood, you all can enjoy it too 😂

Screen recordings won't be including music anymore....????

I just got the pixel 10 pro as an upgrade after a bajillion broken flips, figuring I use more Google software than Samsung anyways, and I just learned that screen record won't record any audio streaming from Spotify. Apparently this is due to some copyright laws or something... If I had known that it wouldn't record audio, I would literally wouldn't have gotten this phone. I make all my own ringtones, notifications, and I edit some personal lip syncing videos into fun little clips with the music I enjoy on Spotify. I pay for these software apps because I enjoy them so much. This phone has completely ruined that ability for me. I'm honestly devastated. I listened to 195,919 minutes last year on Spotify, which is apparently a lot, I'm always listening to music and it's a large part of my life, and I loved being creative in various aspects and the easiest way for me to do that was to use the screen record feature. Im gutted. Anyone else dealing with this as poorly as I am? 🥺

He's not symmetrical, but i created him from scratch and I thought he was pretty cool. Eyes are hand-painted.

I don't have a shop or sell, I just create. A wide variety of things, but I started sewing a while ago and learned starting with minky lol.

(Sorry for the horrible mess of my desk, please try to disregard the clutter)
