A Piece I wrote at the age of 13 and am still in love with to this day

This piece titled "Aphelion" just recently got approved by an arts school in Florida, USA and will hopefully be making it's premiere of performance in October or November.

The instrumentation is written for a popular ensemble "Wind Ensemble" and represents a grade 4 difficulty.

PLEASE GET EARPLUGS

It's come to my attention that from my band camp, and seeing other people's band camps, most people don't use earplugs, and this is mainly targeted at freshmen or anyone that's going into marching band for their first year. (This post is mainly for marching bands that do parades).

Drumline: chances are, your school or ensemble requires you to use them, and yes you need them more then anyone else, don't even doubt it.

Drum majors: Depending on what your ensemble is like, you may be dead in front of the flutes, right in the line of fire for that high pitched sound. And depending on your school, you might also be required to have earplugs.

Flutes and piccolo: You are the section that needs earplugs the second most. Especially since you're surrounded by other VERY high pitched instruments, as for piccolos, it's recommended that you wear earplugs in your regular concert ensemble as well.

EVERYONE ELSE: Depending on how close you are to the flutes & piccolos, or especially drumline, earplugs are HIGHLY recommended. If you're right in front or behind either of those sections, I can't stress enough how much your ears will need a break from super loud drums or super high instruments.

The Last Array

A friend recommended this to me and I had no clue what it was but now I'm in love with it.

I recommend listening to the part around 2:01 and 3:09 if anyone's too lazy to listen to the full thing

Colorado Marching Band

It's been quite obvious to me that, ever since I've been a part of this subreddit, Colorado marching bands, or at least mine, are really different when it comes to heat and what you're allowed to march in.

My school (unfortunately is the only one in our district) is a parade-only marching band. So no field shows, just football game stand tunes. Which for us, means shorter band camp. We have five days of full band camp the week before regular school starts, then we have after school rehearsal. During those five days, we're outside every day. And I don't know if this is because our humidity regularly hits around 11%, but we're outside when it's pretty hot compare to some other places and bands I've seen on this sub. We regularly rehearse and do three full parade reps in 90 degree temps. Sometimes, in full uniform. Which is shirt, shorts, marching shoes, socks, bibs, jacket (which is what I like to call a comfy microwave) and shakos.

Granted we do have multiple kids pass out each year, but I've heard that's 'regular' so I don't really know how to compare this to other states.

Afraid of Drum Major Chances

Over the last month of the previous school year I had a really stupid falling out with a friend of mine. They're a grade below me and said that they'll march the year after this upcoming season. I'm afraid that if they continue to march, when the time comes that I'm in a solid position and my chances are actually up there to get drum major, they'll try to sabotage my chances, because frankly, it's the kind of thing they'd do. Granted, my good chances for drum major are a couple years out but it's running through my head 24/7 and it's actually driving me crazy.

How to be more leadership-y

I’ma student who’s entering their second year in marching band (entering freshman year) and my dream within this ensemble is to get drum major. I’ve asked for lots of advice from other leaders, such as my section leaders, drum majors, and band directors and they all said that pretty much everything was fantastic from my audition, but they said that a large determining factor is being a good leader and having leadership experience, which I have close to none of. I’m asking for how to judge myself into the leadership side of the ensemble, ask feedback is welcome!

He wasn’t lying

i just wrapped up this music camp at a university and on one of the days that i had private instruction, the teacher has asked me if i knew what the piece “the creation” by haydn was, I knew the composer but not the song, and he says that I’ll have to play it eventually, now, a day after that camp ended, I’m looking at audition repertoire for other camps and this is the first one that pops up

Part they gave a bass trombone is almost the exact same as the oboe part

oboe: left

bass trombone: right

in to nervous to tell my director, who’s also a trombonist, because there’s no doubt in my mind that he’ll tell me to just toughen up and play the damn music

i have no idea how i got a scholarship to be here
