Midwest, New England, or...?

I grew up in Michigan, and I'm considering either moving back to the Midwest after 20 years away, or onto new things, such as New England. Every city I used to know seems different, so I don't know where to begin.

I've moved around the country alone, so most anywhere affordable for a helping professional is fair game. I can handle cold, wet, shitty weather, but I'm over the oppressive heat/sun of the SE and SW. I would prefer locals be reserved-but-kind rather than acts-nice-is-mean.

I'm single in my 40s with no kids and prefer midsized cities. I always loved Chicago, but I'm not sure I can swing the HCOL and IL taxes. I'd consider a working class suburb in a metro area. I have a remote job with a modest salary that's expected to end in a year or so, so the local job market needs to be decent.

A thriving music and arts scene is important to me. I don't drink for health reasons and I'm not much of a homebody. I'd love someplace walkable with restaurants, theaters, and things to do besides watch sports with a fridge full of lite beer in the garage.

EDIT: Yeah, I know. My best option is accepting I can't afford to live someplace better, but I haven't given up yet.

Tell me about Env & other possible work for a DIS

I'm a DIS at a LHD in a mid-sized city. My position is funded under the CDC PHIG and is expected to end when those funds dry up. My whole DIS team is expected to be laid off by the end of next year and possibly a couple of our epis.

I've been in my position for over 4 years. Part of my job involves conducting interviews on behalf of the epi for FB/WB/enteric complaints related to local food establishments. I've worked a large multi-state norovirus outbreak and am assisting with a cyclosporiasis cluster.

My work varies and generally supports our epis in Communicable Diseases in various ways, but I handle outbreaks in other monitored settings, so I work closely with our Regional Epi and state. I handle a lot of the medical records and reportables queue. I'm the Data Quality specialist on my team. I audit certain aspects of the epis' work.

I have some time to figure things out, my background and education isn't in public health. I'm looking into the CDI certification and I have a BA. Would a graduate certificate be worth it? I have direct service experience in healthcare, human services, behavioral health, and paralegal work.

I like working FB/WB/enterics in particular. I know there's a high turnover with local health inspectors, but tell me about other options in PH that might be a good fit, please.

Lenny & duck prank

Anyone else ever get the Lenny prank? He sounds like an elderly Australian man with a pet duck. They claimed it was a response to telemarketers, but I worked in a Medicare Advantage call center when I got the call. Like real customers didn't harass us enough. It's one of those call centers where you're not allowed to hang up on callers either, so I had to beg my team lead to let me disconnect after I tried every trick in the book to get them to hang up first. This was years ago, but I came across their number today. Fuck you, Lenny.

On April 28, 2026, a husky named Sammie was found in Iroquois Park near the golf course. She was discovered inside a black garbage bag with twine wrapped around her muzzle. Music for miserable transplants/expats

I'm looking for music written during a low point in an artist's life when they were absolutely miserable because of where they relocated.

Specifically I'm going for the more angry and less melancholic side of this experience, like PJ Harvey's album Rid of the Me and The Birthday Party's entire discography.

I'm open to other genres/styles of music. Certainly don't limit your recs to London inspired pieces. The world is full of muses and miserable places to live.

EDIT: I suppose I should've been more clear that I'm looking for "relocation rage" and explicitly not lonely/sad songs. I imagine there's some overlap, or anger secondary to despair, which is why I worded it the way I did.

Louisville Can Opener feeds on 4 trucks on first day of I-65 closure

I'm not a driver but my BIL is. I also live near the infamous Louisville Can Opener. I-65 will closed in Louisville for major construction for at least two months. Please don't feed the Can Opener.
