(UPDATE: Kitten's first day home and we're both very nervous) I have won Mikey's love!

I'd like to thank everyone who helped me on my last post and reassured me. I was so worried about little Mikey, but I'm happy to announce he's now eating and drinking like a horse, approaches me for cuddles, and LOVES to play.

Mikey finally used his box and began eating about 30 hours after bringing him home. He still hid whenever I came into the room, but late Friday evening he began to explore around the room while I browsed Twitter.

Mikey was really favoring hiding in our bedroom drawers, so we removed the ones low to the ground to encourage him out of hiding. On Saturday morning I managed to lure him out of hiding with a temptations treat, but I found something he liked even more.

My other cat, Ponyo, has a worm on a string toy that she loved when she was younger. I borrowed it and decided to try it with Mikey. It's like magic. Mikey will hear it and come running to hunt! I used this as a tool to get him to be comfortable getting close to me. I eventually got him to play consistently in my lap, and after some play late last night, he fully accepted me petting him!

This turned into a long cuddle session in my bed, where he followed me up and curled up on my chest. He came out this morning without any food bribery, and he's even beginning to start to warm up to my partner. We can't wait to see his full personality come out!

Thank you guys again for reassuring me and letting me know I wasn't failing this little kitten. All I want is to give him a good life and plenty of cuddles, so to see him begin to trust me is all I wanted.

UPDATE: Welcome Home, Mikey!

For those who commented on my name my kitten post, I'd like to formally introduce Michaelangelo Wazowski, or Mikey for short. He's still very nervous, but is showing early signs of trust and beginning to explore his basecamp in my bedroom.

I'm so glad you guys loved Mikey, too. He already has so much space in my heart and I can't wait to see his personality come out!

I just got a new kitten, I'd love to talk about him. AMA!

Hi! I (25F) just brought home an 8-week-old kitten. I named him Mikey. He's my second cat (I currently also have a 3yr old female named Ponyo) and my first ever kitten. I'm very excited to have him! He's a little shy right now, so I'd love to talk about him while he gets used to his new home.

Kitten's first day home and we're both very nervous. A little reassurance/advice, please!

Hey guys! I and my partner (25F 29M) just adopted Mikey, 8weeks, neutered. Little guy has had a very rough life. He was found on the street with only one littermate and no mom, and eventually had one of his eyes removed due to infection before being put up for adoption. We brought him home from the shelter at 2 and it's 10PM now, and I'm microanalyzing how I'm acclimating him. We have a vet appointment scheduled for him next week and live in the USA.

We already have one cat- Ponyo 3F, spayed. Ponyo was the easiest cat in the world to bring home and immediately acted like she owned the place. I knew a shelter kitten would be much shier, but I'm not sure how to make him most comfortable.

We set up Mikey a base camp in our bedroom. Ponyo hissed at him when we first brought him in but didn't do anything beyond that. (Ponyo has forgotten Mikey exists for about five hours now.) My partner has been focusing on giving Ponyo attention, and I've been primarily keeping Mikey in check.

Mikey initially hid in the back of his carrier, and did not move until I left the room. 3hr later I returned to his carrier empty. I found him in the drawer of my nightstand, and he tried to scoot away. I managed to get him out and laid down with him on my chest (I now realize I shouldn't have taken him out when he tried to get away). I let him crawl off of my belly and explore, and he curled up against my thigh and a pile of blankets. I pet him for a bit, and I managed to get him to purr!

After 5-10 minutes, he seemed to move his head away from petting so I picked him back up and placed him by his food and water bowls and stepped back in case he wanted time to himself. He looked around a moment, returned to his carrier and I left.

I've been intermittently checking on him since and he is hiding in a different spot every time. If he's in a spot I can easily reach I'll make myself small as I can and stroke his head gently to show I mean no harm, but if not I leave him be. He hasn't hissed, bit, or clawed me, but I worry about terrifying him or being too pushy and making him resent me. I'm worried that if I don't spend enough time with him at this age, he won't be well socialized or fail to bond with me, but at the same time I don't want to overwhelm him.

I would love some reassurance and advice on how to bond without overwhelming him. Ponyo is more of my partner's cat and our hope is for Mikey to bond closely to me- but if it's not in the cards for Mikey's personality to be that way, I can respect that. I'm aware of the 3-3-3 rule, so I know I need to be patient, but what's the best thing to do in the meantime? I feel like so many sources tell me different things and I just want to give him the best life, he's been through so much.

TLDR: New kitten is understandably terrified and I don't know how to best give him love and bond with him at this phase!

Just found this sub shortly after finding my new boy. Still working on a name!

Was recommended this sub after adopting this little gentleman today and I thought I'd share him here!

This is gonna be my new gaming buddy. Shelter says he was found on the side of the road- his eye was surgically removed due to infection shortly after his shelter arrival. My partner and I are getting the house ready for him currently and will be taking him home either Tuesday or Thursday.

We're still working on a name, so suggestions are being accepted (my second most recent post has a running suggestion box, lol). He's the absolute chillest little guy so far, and I can't wait to take him home this week and see his little personality come out!

Bringing this little man home later this week! Name ideas?

Hey guys! My partner and I took a field trip to the shelter to browse the other day and I fell in love with this little man. I wanted to share him with the class- I've always loved orange cats and I finally have my own model! I was also hoping for some name ideas- the shelter named him Gringo but I don't think it's very fitting for him 😂

We don't know much about his story. Shelter says he was found on the side of the road, and his eye was removed after being brought in because it was infected. His personality so far is very chill and zen, but he's coming off of gabapentin and has only been in a shelter environment so who knows what he'll be like once he's comfortable! We already have a 4 y/o Standard Issue Tabby named Ponyo, and we will be introducing the two slowly to make sure everyone is comfortable and happy.

We're not picky about name ideas- but we particularly love unique names or funny/clever ones, stuff like that. He gives me a more silly vibe than anything majestic, but I'll hear anything out!

EDIT : Wow! Loving all of these awesome suggestions so far, my partner and I keep checking back and seeing more!! We will update this post when a name is decided for our fella :)
