Question

Honestly, I love the entire main cast. Each are so strong and each grouping/pairing has a unique dynamic where the cast can play off their strengths with each other. The supporting cast for this show has also been quite incredible. Does anyone have any favourite moments from this show? I have a few which I'll share below:

Season 1's ending is one of my all-time favourite moments on TV ever; it completed unexpected me and I don't know how I would've survived if I'd watched this in real time and then had to wait a year after that for season 2.

In season 2, I love Elliot's meltdown with the ice - and all the scenes with him and Kate Berlant together.

In season 3, aside from everything Cassidy, Polly and Bob do, it's Dory addressing the jury in the final episode. Alia floors me with her range; if I were on the jury, I'm afraid I would've bought her bullshit.

In season 4, obviously Cole Escola. Also I love Portia's plot with the director who hates her. I love the scene where she's wearing Dory's wig in the back of the car in Babyfoot doing a live stream. Her "everything's fine" voice really tickles me. I feel Meredith's performance is so overlooked.

And I love Drew's bit with the Jesper society in season 5 and even him smoking toward the end of season 1: "Drew smokes now." - I don't know why the image of him looking forlorn with a cigarette in his mouth was so funny but it was. And him threatening Connor o'Malley in season 3 - yes terrifying, but hilarious nonetheless.

I am curious what others have to say about this show. I wish it had obtained more reach!

Appreciation Post

33 Year old guy from Australia. Have loved Veep since day 1. I have rewatched it almost more than I dare admit (30+ times?) and am rewatching with my partner currently. We are just over halfway through season 6. It is shocking that this show never ceases to remain relevant and hilarious. Such a feat in writing and acting overall. Yes, the show changed somewhat and become a tighter, darker sitcom post-season 5, but I am just floored by the all round stellar performances from everyone.

I wanted to know what everyone's favourite season, character or quote is. There are too many for me, though I find myself repeating "Get the government out of my fucking snatch", "What the fuck, Amy? I am putting out two fires in there...." and "Have you been sent from the future to destroy me? Because it's working...." on the regular. Over time, seasons 5 and 4 has proved to me as my favourites. I love Selina, Amy, Kent, Marjorie and Richard the most. I have been wowed by the physical comedy in season 6 - particularly between Tony Hale and JLD. I overlook Tony's performance a lot but it is such an integral part of the show.

Also I want to throw some appreciation toward the actress playing Shawnee Tanz - fuck she nails the role in Season 6. I just about died rewatching when Furlong met her, insulting her looks completely, then after learning who her father was: "Ah, rumours of your beauty have not been exaggerated..." She plays that role incredibly well.

Appreciation Post

33 yo guy from Australia. I grew up playing Abe's Oddysee since I was 5 years old and have subsequently played all the games in the series. I find myself returning to Oddysee and Exoddus regularly and find them to be such excellent games. I now realise they certainly shaped me into the person I am - in spirit, as well as creatively. Not to mention the dark humour...

I am about to start playing all the Oddworld games throughout the rest of the year. I am wondering if these have remained anyone's favourite games from childhood? I find the visuals on PS1 still preferable to the New n Tasty! I love the latter games (especially Stranger's Wrath) and loved that I got to live to see Soulstorm be made. (very much looking for to replaying that one as I have only played it once shortly after it came out)

Series Discussion

33 year old guy from Australia and Long time Kudrow fan. I grew up watching Friends as it aired (aged 4 - 12) and Kudrow as Phoebe was always my favourite performance. The pleasure in growing up in this era and following Kudrow's career is realising she's quite a force behind the camera as a writer/producer and it is rarely appreciated. (I am a writer also).

I discovered The Comeback back in 2016 and fell absolutely in love with season 1 for so many reasons. There was so much there, so much content ripe for interpretation, no real spoon-feeding of what to feel, and such a weirdly relatable neurotic protagonist and a performance unlike anything I'd ever witnessed before. I found myself rewatching, rewatching, rewatching. Learning it eventually came back for a Season 2, which then upped the quality of everything was interesting. I loved Season 2 and its ending for me was something I felt was untouchable in regard to a series comeback, let alone a series ending. It felt perfect. For the past decade, I've been rewatching this series. It never gets old. There are always new things to appreciate, snippets of dialogue that I don't quite catch, small shifts and things happening on camera that aren't always obvious.

When I learned it was renewed for Season 3, I was obviously elated. For me, it did not disappoint at all. After the first episode, I was left with a lot of questions but I am utterly shocked as to how King and Kudrow pulled this season off so masterfully. The three seasons for me are such separate entities that it is actually hard for me to pick a favourite; they exist in such different tonal worlds. I wanted to just vent my love and adoration - but also to ask whether people think how this show will be viewed in coming decades? I feel it will be something that is viewed seminal for this medium.

And what did people think of Season 3 and its ending? I loved how understated it was and felt the B&W to technicolour edition was beautiful and understated. I still love season 2's ending but I feel season 3 has the more fitting ending to this show - Valerie finally self-consciously vulnerable in front of a camera - then the veil returns! I never thought they could top, but for me they did!

Damita Jo Appreciation Post (22 years on)

33yo queer white guy from Australia here. I used the internet to deep dive into music to relate to when I was younger. R&B was one safe place and when I stumbled across The Velvet Rope back in 2009, I never looked back as far as Janet's music is concerned. I did a deep dive into her discography and found I preferred The Velvet Rope, janet. and Discipline as albums back then. I listened to everything post-Control.

Almost 20 years later, I find myself revisiting a lot of 1990s/early 2000s R&B (not just Janet) and re-listened to Damita Jo for the first ever time in about fifteen years. I am shocked as to how well this record has aged, how it might actually be up there as one of her best - maybe not subject-wise, but still an excellent feat of a pop R&B record.

To me, Damita Jo is an amazing concept album with great production and some really cohesive, lush tracks with some of her best vocal layerings and arrangements. It's quite cohesive as an album but also experimental, pop-friendly and funky as fuck when certain tracks hit - the tracks that got me first (2009-era) were Strawberry Bounce, I Want You and Like You Don't Love Me. All pretty safe, mostly singles.

After returning to this album this month, I realised completely overlooked most of it. Warmth and Moist especially - both amazing tracks. I've learned to appreciate All Nite (Don't Stop) as time as gone on. Plus R&B Junkie and SloLove were tracks I am shocked did not appeal to me on earlier listens - both are and will remain on heavy rotation. What I really enjoy about this album is that there is a lightness to it and a celebration of intimacy and I feel it's the summer escape fantasy we all deserve. She does good sex very well and this album, for me, proves that after some uneven attempts on All For You.

Knowing that this album was released one month after the 2004 Super Bowl makes that it was overlooked all the more tragic. Yes, I may be suffering through a bitter winter but I wanted to share some really deserved and overdue appreciation and love for this (yes I'm going to say it) R&B/pop masterpiece. I would love to hear any thoughts others might have on this - or even recommendation for sonically similar albums!
