Did you apply for grants before and/or after placement?

When our private adoption went through we didn’t apply for grants. Things came together quickly, we had the cash on hand after saving for a couple years, it was the cleanest way to do it.

Since then we’ve had to raid our savings to pay for other things kid-related and house-related (our wiring is shitting the bed and that’s not a cheap replacement).

Do places that give grants consider post-adoption factors and allow for post-placement applications?

Regional ballot initiatives

There has been some discussion that allowing for regional ballot initiatives could be a way to fund the T. I’ve heard Jim Aloisi discuss it a fair bit.

What is stopping cities and towns from coordinating a bunch of similar municipality-only ballot initiatives that could accomplish the same thing? I’d think it’d be pretty easy to get the mayors of Boston, Revere, Everett, Medford, Malden, Somerville, Cambridge, Quincy and maybe Watertown to find common ground here. I suppose it would have to be for capital projects only because figuring out what happens if just one city doesn’t pass an initiative for operations funding would be messy.

Two Boston city councilors pitched a plan to extend the Orange Line. The map they used was riddled with AI-generated mistakes.

A report based on an unnamed source says there's a harassment complaint against Phil Eng. What's going on?

I hesitate to post this because it was a weakly sourced item posted on Contrarian Boston, but I want to discuss the motivations and possible ramifications more than the report. Mods, I get it if you delete.

CB reports that there is a harassment — it clarified not sexual harassment — complaint against Phil Eng by a member of his leadership team and that there have been continued board discussions regarding a settlement. There are no on-the-record quotes and no documents are cited. It reads like it's a one-source story. I wouldn't have ran with it in my journalism days but CB did, and some people view it as a legit news source.

My first thought is that someone important wants Eng out, for whatever reason. I get that this is Boston politics at its finest, but yeah. I'm wondering who was motivated to do so and had knowledge of these settlement talks, if the report is accurate. Is this coming from the governor's office? The T board? The board would know about settlement talks, but I think it'd stay within that realm.

It seems like there are competent folks running various departments, but it also seems like the agency is a tall Jenga stack and one errant tug of a block away from becoming a major mess again.

Is Taylor Tomlinson dating Sophie Buddle?

None of my business but the gram PDA-age, my gawd.

(I’m mostly kidding because Sophie has talked repeatedly about dating a guy. But who knows.)

AM alert: We’ve got a slower-than-normal Red Line

On the Braintree branch this morning and I’m on a 01600. Slower-than-normal going headed northbound, but not 2023 bad. Not sure how much of it is an old trainset and how much of it is heat-restriction related. The ride certainly ain’t smooth.

Also the T reported a switch problem earlier near JFK, and they haven’t sent out an all clear.

Godspeed on your commute.

Edit: The Green Line in the central subway is also lagging, at least Park-Arlington.

Edit: The T sent out an all-clear for the Red Line issues at 10:17, for what it’s worth.

Edit 3: Got an alert at 2:50ish saying the delays popped up this afternoon… 30 minutes.

(NASCAR.COM) Analysis: Five people who should be on the NASCAR Hall of Fame ballot

https://www.nascar.com/news-media/2026/05/18/cup-series-analysis-five-people-who-should-be-on-hall-of-fame-ballot/

Kyle Petty basically saying Smokey Yunick is a fraud is… a choice.

> “All the B.S. stories you hear about Smokey doesn’t mean every one of them is a fact. If it was, then Paul Bunyan should be in the freaking Loggers Hall of Fame, right? It’s a myth.” <

Also I feel like Holman and Moody should go in as a pair.

We have to replace our (electric) furnace from the early ‘80s and just got a quote from Coastal Heating and AC. Has anyone worked with them? Good or bad experiences? Any other recommendations? This is the first big thing we’ve done with our place and since it’s mucho $$$$ I’m hoping to make the correct choice.

Before you ask, no, we can’t switch to gas or oil since it’s an all-electric complex.

Thanks.

This is for the works. Equipment dates back to townhouse's construction (c. 1982-84).

Our HVAC company, which has been good to deal with in the past, tossed us this quote, and I can't help but think we're getting a little soaked because we're a captive audience. Am I off base? I'm doing some research today and planning to get other quotes, just wanted an off-hand observation from an expert.

Also: Are there are any other things we should do now, while everything is being torn apart? I'll (begrudgingly) spend an extra grand or two if we're futureproofing/going to significantly lower bills.

TIA.

I saw one out and about yesterday for the first time in months or even a year. They’d stopped printing them by the time I got my first car (1998) and I’m an old. That’s dedication to keep them. I thought the paint would’ve faded.
