HYPOTHETICALLY!!! In Michigan some license plate styles are free, and some are paid. I have a custom plate “EXAMPLE1” for example (paid for upfront + renewal fee) and I wanted the “legacy” style, black plate with white letters… the legacy style is also an additional yearly fee on top of the custom fee… similar styles like green with white lettering are free….

Question is: now that I physically own a paid style plate, and have a couple years of registration stickers on it… if I were to change from a paid style to a free style, but kept the exact same “EXAMPLE1” and paid for a new plate to be shipped... Could I take the sticker for the Green with white letters style Pleate “EXAMPLE1” and stick it on my black with white letter “EXAMPLE1” plate and bypass the yearly fee for the black style? If I got pulled over, does the cops system show specifically what style plate I'm supposed to have or just the plate number “EXAMPLE1”
