TTE and Accessibility at Union Station
This happened last weekend but I only have time to post about it now. I am a wheelchair user. I took the B Line to Union Station, got off, tapped at the gate to exit... and nothing happened. Tapped again, nothing happened. (My card had worked fine when I got on the train.) I looked for another accessible gate, but there wasn't one. I tried a couple more times and still nothing. I was hit by the absurdity of having gotten to my destination only to be unable to leave the station -- and not because of a broken elevator, which at least makes sense, but because of a fare enforcement policy. At that point, another passenger opened the emergency gate for me and thankfully it wasn't alarmed.
I know a lot of people on this sub are fans of TTE, but fare validators break sometimes and it can cause real problems for people who can't just go to another gate. If Metro wants to implement TTE at a station, there should first be at least two accessible gates there. Really, all stations should have at least two because not being able to get on your train also sucks, but it's less ridiculous than this was.
