Advice for fixing up an old Silentaire 20A

Just picked up a Silentaire 20A from 1987. Seems to work well but it’s really noisy. Not as bad as my little no-name oil-less compressor, but close. Does anyone have any advice for me? I’m inclined to change the oil (it’s low and dirty) and hope for the best but I’m worried it’s still gonna be loud after I dump $50-100 in and I’ll end up wanting a new one after all.

If I do change the oil, I’m inclined to take the motor out and wipe all the old sludge off as much as possible — is that a bad idea?

(I contacted customer service, I’m just posting here bc I’m impatient)

How does this work?

Sorry for the remedial question! Seedance is made by Bytedance, right? But as I understand it I can’t just go to bytedance.com to use it, I have to go through a 3rd-party vendor? Kind of like a car dealership? Why? Do they all do the same thing? How do I know which one is best? I’m seeing people mention Atlas Cloud and Dremina a lot and I’m inclined to just pick one and try generating something but I’d like to understand a little about how it works first.

I want to learn everything but as a cinematographer who’s trying to figure this tech out before it takes my job, I’m most interested in VFX of existing footage (enhancing lighting/color/style, BG replacement, making someone say something different from what they’re saying in the video, or animating a static object, like a toy or a stuffed animal).

Pack your bags folks, it’s over

People seem to be honestly enjoying completely ai-generated content: https://www.reddit.com/r/Vertical\_Dramas/s/s3ldglgVFQ

“But top-tier movies are safe,” you say? Sure — for now. But how will we get a future top tier when there’s no bottom tier for people to cut their teeth on? I knew it was gonna be bad, but I thought the commercial/advertising world would be taken over first. (Which is bad enough!) Seeing people actually spending their time watching these, and enjoying them… I don’t know what to say.

Maybe I’ll go into carpentry.

[OC] Romeo, 2026

Oil on canvas
9x9”

My latest painting. A present to my wife, a portrait of her favorite bear. 100% from life (well 99%, the hearts are an invention, the bg was a red t-shirt)

Holy cow this one was hard. It took 5 days (though some of the sessions were on the shorter side, 2-3 hrs) and started out as 9x11.

[Recommendations] How are y’all shipping your oil paintings?

(Searched the group and couldn’t find much about it)

I’m thinking of shipping mine securely framed in a floating frame with the painting inset about 1/8”, wrapping it once in Saran Wrap, sandwiching it between two pieces of 1/8” chipboard, wrapping it again in Saran Wrap, wrapping it in bubble wrap, and then in a cardboard box. Do you think that’s sufficient? Or overkill? I feel like that’s good for works up to say, 16x20 and $2k?

Looking for advice for my faulty-from-the-start Domino

I got a domino mid-2021 (from highland woodworking). My first Festool! It was DOA. After trying about 20 times, it finally started up. I have no idea why I tried 20 times, I guess I REALLY wanted to use it.

While using it, it smelled like something was burning. It worked for a single project, then stopped working again. I sent it in for repairs and when it came back it worked but it still smelled like something was burning when I used it. Once again, it worked for a single project, and the next day it wouldn't turn on. I put it away in frustration and swore to never buy Festool again. Literally the only power tool to ever fail me.

This month, I needed to make some picture frames, which the domino would be reeeeally nice for, so I pulled it out – who knows, maybe it would work. Nope, dead. I took it home to send it back in. Before I filed another repair order, I plugged it in at home. It worked! I brought it back to the shop and made two frames. It indeed was PERFECT. But it still smelled like burning when I used it. And then when I tried to make the third frame today, once again, dead.

I went to fill out another repair request , only to find out there's no lifetime warranty, and I'm going to be charged for this repair. (The last one was free, though IIRC I paid shipping). I'm gonna try calling them tomorrow but before I do, anyone have any advice about the best course of action? This should be as beloved as my Lie-Nielsen planes, and it's brought me nothing but heartache.

[OC] White Onion, oil on canvas, 8x10”

Hey, a place to post paintings — cool! Here’s my latest one

Edit: Wow thanks for the incredibly kind words everyone! I’m classically (I think?) trained but just getting back into painting after a loooong hiatus. Makes me feel so good to get such a nice response from my first post here 😊
