Issues Logging In After Motherboard Replacement
My wife's grandmother's computer wouldn't turn on. She took it in to Micro Center. Said it was a motherboard failure. They replaced the motherboard but told her when they called to say it was ready to be picked up that she would need to log back in to Windows when she takes it home because it was asking for her password and they didn't want her to give it over the phone.
She picked it up and asked me to hook it back up again. Now I'm having trouble getting her logged back in to Windows 11. It says that I can't login with the PIN due to security changes. When I try to login with her Microsoft Account email and password, it says I am not connected to the internet. I was connected via Ethernet and also disconnected the Ethernet and connected to Wi-Fi from the login screen to see if that made a difference. I Googled the login issue and found others with the same problem. I was able to use the command prompt to allow me to sign in as an administrator. The Internet is definitely working. I ran Windows update and the motherboard's software installed some things but I still can't sign in.
It is looking like I will either need to update the BIOS with a flash drive or reinstall Windows. If I have to reinstall Windows, I'm assuming it will wipe the hard drive. Is there any way to avoid that? I did have it setup to automatically backup her important business files to an external hard drive when she first got the computer a couple years ago but I haven't checked it recently to see if it was still backing up properly. She also has Microsoft 365 so most things should be saved to the cloud.
I'm just afraid if I reinstall Windows, she's going to be missing some random important file.
Motherboard is a Gigabyte B550M DS3H AC R2
