Retirement and Health Insurance

Hello everyone,

I'm currently pursuing a Master's in TESOL. I'll be done with my degree next year, May 2027. I'm from a small city in Western New York, and am looking into moving to a big city, like Boston or New York. Preferably, New York so I could be a part of the New York State Teacher's Retirement System.

I'm trying to see if I could even afford to live in New York. The starting salary for a teacher with no experience and their Master's in New York is about $25,000 more than the area I live, but rent is on average 300% more...

  1. How much do you pay for Health insurance each month?
  2. How much is your rent? (if you're comfortable sharing)
  3. Would you say the Numbeo website is accurate for the expenses outside of rent? (~$1,700/mo)

I was able to find the Green Apple Guide for stuff like co-pays, but I'll be honest, I'm not really sure what the UFT Welfare Fund is. Is it insurance?

I assume that I'll be paying about ~$310/mo for the retirement system. Correct me if that's wrong.

Thank you for your time and input!

Politeness and Morphological Type Meta Analysis

Hi everyone,

I'm writing a paper on Telugu politeness. It's for an upper level undergrad Linguistic Anthropology class.

With my language experience, English and some Korean, French & German, it feels like to me, politeness shows up in a different way possibly by morphological type? I'm trying to explore this in my paper, but none of our readings in class mentioned anything like this.

Does anyone know of any research papers that compare honorifics & redress according to morphological type? Preferably something like what could get posted to WALS. WALS has a chapter on the pronouns, which is useful, but I need more than just pronouns.

Thank you guys!

Snow Goose Rarity in Western New York

Hello everyone!

I attend University at Buffalo North Campus. I was born and raised in the area. North Campus is known for being “overrun” with the Canada Goose. Every spring in the dorms we have dozens of goslings and everyone loves them.

This semester, we have a snow goose. Now I have never heard of this bird in my life. I’m not really into birding, but my mom taught biology for like 15 years and she knows practically all the local critters. She didn’t recognize this as a snow goose when I showed her the image.

I was able to find out it is a snow goose because someone else posted in our subreddit about an albino goose, and people corrected them saying it was a snow goose. So I looked it up because I’ve never heard of it!

Wikipedia gives you a map of the birds’ range, and lo and behold, Western New York is NOT a part of those migration patterns. (Granted, it’s Wikipedia)

Is this rare to find a snow goose in this area?

If it is, why is it here?

(I’m mostly asking because I’m scared their migration patterns are being affected by climate change or some other human intervention. I really have no familiarity with birds, so I don’t want to assume the worst without at least asking around.)

Thanks everyone! I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Main Street Car Sharing

Is this not going to just create issues with rail times like they have with the busses and trams in Toronto…?

I liked that area the way it was, but I do think it could’ve used some revamping. But I don’t think more cars was the way to do it.

This feels like going backwards to me.

Hi! I just joined!

I hope to see Buffalo & WNY looking like the Netherlands 😆. But we have a longggggg way to go.

I was looking into the High Speed Rail for NYS. The last I can find is reports from 2014 and meeting minutes from 2013. How is progress coming along??? Did they abandon us??

Hello all, but especially sewists!

After the closing of JoAnn’s, my family has been looking for sewing shops that sell apparel fabric. We’ve been making trips to Ontario to find stores that have a good selection.

We just visited Jackie Lynn’s Fabric Center in Irondequoit, and it was a great success! Most sewing centers only have fabric for quilting (patterns/materials not suitable for clothing), but she had a decent amount and we found everything we needed this time.

Her website:
https://www.jackielynns.com/

Jackie herself cut our bolts and we got to chatting. She’s planning to make more room for apparel fabrics in the next coming months. I recommend making the trip to see what she’s got!

But, I’m also curious… we only found this shop through word of mouth. This makes me think there’s got to be some here in Buffalo.

Do you guys know of any local fabric stores that sell apparel fabric?? (not just quilting fabrics)
