ETA - apologies for typo in title, I know it’s spelled Telugu!

Hello! I am performing a wedding ceremony this fall. One of the themes is how the couple's love for each other cannot be described with the English language. I go into the Danish word hygge, the Japanese ikigai, and the Dutch word, gezellig. The groom is from Hyderabad and many of his family members speak Telugu, so I would love to include their language in the ceremony. My question is: are there any words you can think of in Telugu that, similarly to the words above:

1. Don't have a direct English translation
2. Describe love, togetherness, comfort, safety or any related concept

కర్ణాటక సాహిత్యంలో తెలుగు సాహిత్యానికి శ్యామశాస్త్రి చేసిన కృషిని స్మరించుకోవడానికే ఈ పోస్ట్.

చాలా మంది తెలుగు యువతకు, పాత తరానికి త్యాగరాజు గారి గురించి బాగా తెలుసు. నా తోటి తరం వారితో జరిగిన సంభాషణల ద్వారా, శ్యామ శాస్త్రి గారి కృషి గురించి, కర్ణాటక సంగీతంలో ఆయన చేసిన కృషి గురించి చాలా తక్కువ మందికి తెలుసని నాకు అనిపించింది. ఆయన అమ్మవారిపై రచించిన కీర్తనలు చాలా సరళమైన తెలుగులో ఉండి, వినడానికి ఎంతో హాయిగా అనిపిస్తాయి. కానీ మన తరం ఆయన రచనలను నిజంగా మెచ్చుకోకపోవడం, వాటి గురించి తెలుసుకోవడానికి ప్రయత్నించకపోవడం నాకు చాలా బాధగా ఉంది.

నేను ప్రతిరోజూ అతని కీర్తనలు వింటాను. త్యాగరాజ ఆరాధన ఎలా చేస్తామో అలాగే శ్యామ శాస్త్రి గారి ఆరాధన కూడా ప్రారంభించాలని ఒక చిన్న ఆశ.

Hey All

About 15 weeks ago, my sister and I started an Instagram page called Storeelu, a small Telugu storytelling page for kids and parents.

The idea is to tell **moral stories from the most mundane things around us**, but without being preachy. We just try to tell creative, wholesome stories that kids enjoy and naturally take something away from.

We post one new story every **Sunday at 9 AM EST** (our little homage to those Sunday *Panchatantram* memories we grew up with).

I tried reaching out to a bunch of creators for feedback or even a small shoutout, but didn’t really hear back. So I thought I’d ask here instead.

If you have a couple of minutes, please check out one of our stories and let me know what you honestly think. Any feedback, good or bad, is welcome.

And if you genuinely feel it’s worth sharing, a shoutout or sharing it with another parent would mean a lot.

We’d love for these stories to reach more Telugu kids and families.

(ఇన్నాళ్ళు మరీ భారత ప్రాంతీయ భాషలు కదా ఏం చేస్తారులే అని అనుకున్నా. కానీ మన కన్న తక్కువ జనాభా ఉన్న తమిళ వారికి చేస్తే మనకి ఎందుకు చేయకూడదు? పైగా telugu is the 16th most spoken language in the world not a small language)

Guys, no offence meant to speakers of any language. I’m not trying to start a language war here. This is more of a vent/rant and I genuinely want to know if others have felt the same way.

I have lived in Hyderabad almost my entire life, except for a few years of onsite trips here and there. Over the years, I’ve noticed a pattern that honestly feels quite frustrating.

From office spaces where worked in Hitec City Wipro, Infosys, Oracle, etc. to random marketing calls from banks, I’ve repeatedly seen people directly assume that everyone should understand Hindi. And sometimes it is not just the assumption, but the tone that bothers me.

A few examples:

At a juice stall near Tech Mahindra, I once saw a fresher girl from Andhra asking for something. The person at the stall was speaking to her in Hindi in a very condescending way, almost as if she was illiterate just because she could not respond fluently.

In the Infosys canteen, I saw a senior leader from outside the Telugu states shouting at a catering guy because the mango pickle, avakaya, was spicy. I mean, what else do you expect from avakaya?

On the Inorbit–Durgam Cheruvu road, there was a minor accident involving an Uber I was in. A Hindi-speaking person was speaking very aggressively and intimidatingly to the Uber driver for no fault of the uber driver. The driver was Telugu and was struggling to respond in broken Hindi.

Even with marketing calls, many callers directly start speaking in Hindi without checking whether the other person is comfortable with it. Personally, I find that quite disrespectful.

My issue is not with Hindi as a language or with Hindi speakers in general. My issue is with the expectation that everyone should automatically know Hindi, and with the condescending attitude some people show when others do not speak it fluently.

A lot of people also seem unaware that Hindi is an official language of the country, but it is not “the national language” of India.

I honestly do not feel the need to become fluent in Hindi unless I have a practical reason to do so. For example, I learned English because it directly helps with work, career, and livelihood. That is a clear incentive. But I do not think people should be shamed or looked down upon for not being fluent in Hindi, especially in a city like Hyderabad.

I understand patriotism, national feeling, and the idea of connecting with people across states. But expecting others to know your language without any sensitivity, and then speaking to them in a superior or mocking tone when they do not, is really frustrating. By the way i consider myself fluent in hindi, and i can have a fluent conversation in hindi.

Does anyone else feel this way, or is it just me?
