Definition of honest voting

I’m constantly running into pushback from various voting enthusiasts about the terms “strategic”, “tactical”, “dishonest”, and “honest” voting. Arguments like “It’s just a piece of paper. If you mark it to give you your preferred outcome, then it’s honest voting.” and “If the way other voters are voting doesn’t matter, then you would just bullet vote for your favorite.” My response is typically grumbled frustration, but now I think have an actual definition of honest voting that isn’t just based on vibes:

An honest vote is the way an individual voter would vote if they assumed all candidates have roughly equal viability, regardless of the actual viability of the candidates.

I’m likely the thousandth person to think of this, but I haven’t come across it this explicitly before. What are your thoughts?

Indexing benchmarks?

Has anyone done any measurements on search performance in macOS 27 yet? The only thing I'm finding is that indexing takes a while. Even a subjective telling would be awesome. If you're interested in possible benchmarks to do in both macOS 26 and 27 for comparison, here are some ideas:

  • speed to first result of various searches
  • speed to full results of various searches
  • time to finish indexing
  • index size
  • CPU or battery usage during indexing
  • filesystem watching behavior

Passwordless account sharing?

The correct way to build a platform is to allow the creation of some umbrella account that allows a manager to add additional accounts under it so each individual manages their own login. Some platforms will never do this because of shortsighted greed in an attempt to force the purchase of several licenses.

The inevitable consequence is that small nonprofits and other groups share passwords so multiple people can login and do what’s needed for the organization, from social media management to making automations on Zapier.

If these platforms begin phasing out password login all together, will there be a way I can still get a handful of different volunteers into the same account? I recall hearing Apple mention something about passkeys being easy to share when they first introduced them, but maybe I’m wrong because I haven’t come across that yet.

Thoughts?

So did base M4 mini buyers basically just beat the market?

(There are no sub-specific flair options for me at the time of posting this on the official mobile app? Feel free to mark it as discussion.)

It feels like the equivalent of buying a stock at its lowest ever point and then later selling it all at the highest it’ll ever be. Apple had a supply chain buffer far beyond anything any other tech manufacturer could dream of, but it seems Apple is reaching the end of it. The RAM prices might not let up for years, and even Apple is no longer immune. I think it’s reasonable to assume a good machine with 16GB RAM will not be available to buy new for $500 for a very very long time from any company.

Maybe I’m being overdramatic, but it feels like a “they don’t make ‘em like they used to” moment. Yes, you can spend more to get something awesome, but it feels like we were (re-)entering a new beautiful era of affordable high-end computing that has now been ripped away from us, and the base M4 mini was its last whisper.
