A few months ago I was doing a month road trip and on the last few days I ran out of cash. The only road to tokyo was cash toll only no etc and the toll free route was an extra 2 hours. I dont remember if it was in tochigi but it was about an hour away from Tokyo, about 10pm at night and I had no way of getting cash ( no debit card). I took my chances at an airport for a currency conversion but it wasn't open - thats when this kind Japanese security guard asked me questions to understand my situation. When he saw how hopeless I looked he gave me 2k yen in 100 yen coins and refused any sort of compensation. I did a deep bow and thanked him profusely. Im going to pass by that airport again in about a month - is it acceptable to give me 10k yen or would a gift be better? Any ideas are helpful - thank you
