20th Annual COPS National Golf Tournament

The 20th Annual National COPS Golf Tournament will be held at Osage National Golf Resort, a course designed by Arnold Palmer. Players will participate in a four-person scramble, playing the River and Mountain courses.

How to contact people in office about the Columbia library situation

Hi, if you're on this subreddit, you are probably aware of attacks by Missouri Republicans on the Daniel Boone Regional Library over its "Rainbow Story Time" event. If not, I'll let you read the story.

All good?

Now, if you have opinions about the attacks on DBRL in general and the Columbia library in particular, here are some places where you can voice your concerns.

I worked in journalism for most of my career (nearly 30 years) and also in legislative offices (RIP Ike Skelton) so I have sen both sides of this. Please take this advice in the friendly spirit it's intended.

The most effective way of getting a message to a legislator is a written letter. These take time and effort to compose, but the ACLU has a handy guide for how to write a letter to a legislator here. I won't steal their thunder, but the most effective way is to immediately identify yourself as a constituent, raise the problem in a firm but courteous manner, and state your personal connection to the issue.

The next best way to contact a legislative office is to call your legislator. Please keep in mind that the people answering the calls are office staff or interns, who are there to do that job (answer the phone) and not to set policy or advise the government official. Don't be rude to them, but again, identify yourself as a constituent, state the issue clearly, and your position on it.

Emails to state officials are almost useless. They can be programmatically generated, often using fake addresses, are impossible to verify, and just get sent to the (metaphorical) circular file. Importantly, emails at the county or city level may actually be useful, because people in those offices generally serve part-time and get very few actual contacts with the public.

The legislator you need to contact is the one who represents you. It might feel good to call and give Rick Brattin a piece of your mind, but unless you live in Harrisonville, he's not obligated to listen to you and, in some theories of government, is empowered to actively ignore you, because he's not your representative. The good news is that Denny Hoskins is your Missouri Secretary of State, so his office is a good one to contact to voice your opinion.

Here is how to find your legislator at the various levels of state and local government involved. The people involved in this are working at the state and local level, so contacting state and local officials is the right way to go.

Update on data center policy in Camden County

Some of you who live in the area will remember the recent kerfuffle over allowing a data center in a proposed Opportunity Zone in Camden County (technically, the decision before the commission was whether to support the planned OZ, but a proposed data center was the focus of the attention).

As a follow up on that, the Camden County Commission heard a proposal at their meeting last week to rewrite part of the Uniform Land Use Code (ULUC), including a proposed Appendix L that would include new regulations on data centers. Two people on the commission, Stacy Shore and Kris Franken, presented a proposal from the rewrite committee to, among other things:

  • classify data centers into categories by land use or energy usage (ranging from micro to hyperscale)

  • requires data centers to have annual publicly available compliance reports for regulations (see below)

  • creates a regulatory process for permitting and agreements

  • mandates a county-wide referendum with a majority of registered voters approving permits for a data center (the applicant pays for the election)

  • require data centers to have a year's worth of their water usage stored on site

  • creates an escalator clause for higher costs for water in drought conditions

  • creates specifications for EMF, vibration, sound, waste disposal, and environmental cleanup (with a center having to post bond for cleanups)

Essentially, the proposed policy would make it very unattractive to build a data center in Camden County, particularly when other counties are making it very attractive to build data centers on their land.

The commission meeting was intended to float the proposal (pun intended) before lake area residents, so there was not a vote on it. I will keep an eye on the upcoming commission meetings and do my best to post information on them here before this is discussed again.

As a reminder, the commissioners meet at least once a week, with a public schedule that is posted here. Meeting agendas are posted at least 24 hours in advance of the meeting, as required by law. The commission generally meets at 10 a.m. on scheduled dates in the county admin building/old courthouse, 1 Courthouse Dr NW, Camdenton.

A celebration of Juneteenth and African-American history

Happy Juneteenth everyone!

For those not aware, Juneteenth celebrates slavery coming to an end in the United States, commemorating the date, June 19th, 1865, when Galveston, Texas, came under American control. Galveston was the last major rebel territory to have the Emancipation Proclamation come into force.

Branching out from its Texas roots, Juneteenth has become an important date for celebration within the African-American community, and is recognized as a holiday by most US states. In recent times, push for Federal recognition has given the date particular prominence, and it has been declared a federal holiday.

In light of this, we felt it appropriate to use the day to highlight some past answers on the subreddit that speak to the history of African-Americans, as well as the struggle to guarantee truly equal rights that continued, and still remains, in the wake of emancipation. If this seems familiar, it's because we have done this in previous years.

Below you will see multiple threads that address and highlight African-American history, the continuing fight for equal rights for Black Americans, and the ongoing effort to ensure that, in the words of the enslaver Thomas Jefferson, all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

Family Gospel Singing Fest

Ozark Rides Rally is a motorcycle rally that will have guided rides starting at five locations around the Lake Area at specific times and ending at five different locations around the Lake Area. There is a meeting of the Camden County Commission at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 30 which will have open discussion time where you can present your opinions on a possible data center in the Opportunity Zone in Camden County.

The Commission meets on the third floor of the Camden County Courthouse, at the corner of Old 5 and 54 (GPS address is 1 Court Circle Northwest, Camdenton).

The commission generally posts its agendas here a day in advance of the meeting; this is the direct link to the agenda in which the only current topic is the Opportunity Zone.

I did a little digging and found this map of the Opportunity Zone itself, which is in the northwest corner of the county, north of the main arm and east into Sunrise Beach. This is the actual link to the Opportunity Zone maps from which I took that screenshot.

I see a lot of posts here with some variation of "I didn't know this was happening!" with regard to local events, government decisions, road closures, Flock cameras ... you name it. So I decided to post a guide to the local news options and outlets for people to know what's going on.

Caveat lector: I taught journalism for 15 years mostly at the Missourian, so that's my personal bias, but I think for good reason.

First observation: If you want to find out what's going on, you need to read local newspapers, listen to local radio, and watch local TV stations. Your algorithmic feed on Facebook/Insta/Snap/Tiktok/whatever is going to give you whatever the content provider thinks will sell you advertising, which is likely not information about local news and events. Almost every outlet listed below will offer push notifications, podcasts, or newsletters (or a combination of all of them) that will just show up in your inbox, too!

With that out of the way, let's talk about the news outlets in town:

It is a 501(c)3 corporation owned by the Missourian Publishing Association, and is funded by selling advertising and subscriptions, direct donations, endowment revenue, and receiving lab fees from the University of Missouri to serve as a teaching lab. It covers Columbia and Boone County news, sports, and education, includes an opinion section, and publishes obituaries as well as periodic special sections covering large topics. It has a fairly large rotating group of student reporters, editors, photographers, and so forth, and also collaborates closely with KOMU and KBIA on news stories to produce audio and visual reports. Student reporters are overseen by editors who are faculty of the School of Journalism.

You can read the Missourian by going to its website directly, or by subscribing to its various newsletters, which include a morning or evening headline update, a sports newsletter, a parent-focused newsletter, and the weekly roundup of obituaries.

The Columbia Daily Tribune is the other newspaper in town, long owned locally by the Waters family and now part of the Gannett family of newspapers (Gannett owns most of the daily newspapers in the US). It has a staff of only two people in its newsroom. It has a fairly large collection of newsletters also, including several from the USA Today Network that are national in scope.

The Boone County Journal is a weekly now owned by he Missourian, with a newsroom in Ashland. It covers mostly southern Boone County news and events, and has a daily newsletter of headlines.

The Centralia Fireside Guard covers northern Boone County; it requires a login or subscription to read most of its content.

The Maneater is the student newspaper of the University of Missouri; it is fiercely independent and not affiliated with the School of Journalism. It also publishes MOVE magazine. Look here for anything hyper-local about the university =.

Local radio

KBIA is an NPR-member public radio station with an FCC license to the University of Missouri. Like the Missourian, it serves as a teaching newsroom for the School of Journalism, and is funded through donations from listeners and corporate underwriters. (It pays fees to NPR, American Public Media, and Public Radio International to disseminate programming from those outlets.) KBIA is on the air at 91.3 FM in mid-Missouri, 90.5 in Mexico, Mo and 89.7 FM in Kirksville; and has HD radio channels for classical and adult contemporary music. It also streams its programming 24 hours a day. KBIA has multiple podcast offerings.

KOPN is the community radio station, hosting multiple local programs run by community members. It's on the air at 89.5 FM and offers multiple streams and podcasts.

The Eagle is the local news talk station, which offers Wake Up Mid-Missouri, which is a good listen if you want a more conservative take on news. The station broadcasts on 93.9 and has a variety of podcasts as well. It's owned by Zimmer Radio, which also owns ...

KWOS, which is the conservative/Fox News station in the area. The station broadcasts on 950 AM and 104.3 and has programming from Fox News Radio, Compass Media Networks, Genesis Communications Network, Premiere Networks, USA Radio Network, and Westwood One. It was a longtime radio affiliate of Rush Limbaugh's production companies.

KFRU is another news-talk station, which has two early morning programs that are agenda-setting for the city, with David Gaines and Simon Rose. The station is owned by Cumulus and has affiliations with NBC and ABC radio.

Local TV

KOMU8 is the news station affiliated with NBC and the CW which is operated with an FCC license from the University of Missouri. It's part of the Missouri News Network of outlets staffed by journalism students. It broadcasts, as you would guess, on channel 8 on traditional television and also livestreams from its website. It offers breaking news, local news, and severe weather alert newsletters and podcasts, as well as a fully-featured local weather app that includes live streaming of severe weather broadcasts.

KMIZ/KQFX are sister stations that are Fox and ABC affiliate stations owned by the News-Press and Gazette company from St. Joseph. The stations are headquartered in Columbia and have a reach throughout mid-Missouri.

KRCG is the CBS-affiliate station in New Bloomfield, owned by Sinclair Media, which covers mid-Missouri.

Arts, Culture, and Entertainment

Vox Magazine is part of the Missouri News Network and operated by students at the Missouri School of Journalism; it's technically part of the Missourian. The magazine publishes in print monthly and is distributed free around town, and has a decently robust website.

I specifically didn't include business publications here or city magazines, as those tend to be more niche-focused and many have different standards of publication than the organizations listed above. I also didn't list independent podcasts, as I don't listen to enough to be informed about the quality of them.

Growing up, my family had a house on the Little Niangua arm near Roach. We would always tune into KY3 (the place to be) on the old TV if there was a bad storm, and we knew to take it seriously when the antenna stopped working. KOMU also covers the lake area, as does KRCG in Columbia. But where else do you get storm coverage?

Inspired of course by the exciting weather today and yesterday.

Lake of the Ozarks Endurance Runs Starts at 7 a.m. Saturday, May 2

The Lake of the Ozarks Endurance Runs will return to Lake of the Ozarks State Park on Saturday, May 2. The races will begin and finish at Public Beach #1, welcoming runners from across the Midwest and beyond. Races include:

  • LOZ Traverse – a 35-mile endurance challenge, including a unique paddle ultra component with 32 miles of running and 3 miles of paddling, connecting multiple trail systems within the park

  • Trail of Four Winds 25K – the original race that launched the event

  • Wandering Bobcat 5 Miler – a shorter, accessible course that also welcomes hikers

The races are organized by Ha Ha Racing Events, which has steadily expanded the event while maintaining a focus on quality and runner experience. Magic Dragon Trails works to expand trail access throughout the Lake of the Ozarks area, creating more opportunities for both local residents and visitors to explore and enjoy the region’s growing trail system.

Anyone can enter for a fun day on Lake of the Ozarks! Visit more than 40 of our participating locations on the water to collect your poker hand. Enter the Harbor hop by stopping at any of the check points. To obtain a hand, sign up and pay an optional $20 donation. Any player can enter more than once. The 1st card is drawn at the checkpoint where the hand is purchased; 6 additional cards are obtained by hopping to six more checkpoints drawing one card, per hand, at each location. The hand is complete when the 7th card is drawn. To qualify the hand must be turned in by 7pm at your last checkpoint. Winners will be notified by certified mail.

A few Harbor Hop checkpoints open as early as 9:00 am, but most open at 11:00 am. Check the website for a complete list of participating locations and scheduled times.
