Obon coordination

Please excuse a very creased kimono, it recently came out of a wash and it seems like hanging it on the kimono hanger wasn't enough, and I have been procrastinating with ironing it, anyone else can relate?

Quick and dirty Obon coordination because I simply forgot until today that it's Obon time and I wanted to coordinate my new Suu obidome with my wakka yōkai parade obi for Obon this summer.

The summer sanbuhimo is also new, and a first one for me, I knew of natsumono sanbuhimo, but they are super rare even brand new. I'm sad to say that soon after I bought this one, it sold out. But it's not like you need a summer sanbuhimo for obidome, it's mostly a gimmick item, but it's so cool, I really wanted at least one in my collection.

The obiage is something I hand dyed probably close to a decade ago now. I'm happy how well it coordinates with the obijime, I didn't have an obijime that matched it before so it was never really used.

The little key charm as netsuke is a little fūrin bell, I either bought it online or when I visited Japan, it's been yesrs so I don't remember anymore.

Probably an unpopular opinion: small business oweners always scrambling with the new EU rules at the last minute

This is now almost a yearly tradition that a new EU legislation is finally becoming law, months or years after being passed, and yet people who make the decision/are lucky enough to turn their crafy interest into a full time job act like they are brand new to the business/amateurs (when they have been often selling for over a decade slowly building their following) and with about 2 weeks to spare suddenly are in a tizzy, scrambling to figure out how this will affect them, pausing sales, create a way-too-late public outcry and months-too-late petitions to change the upcoming law, because they have no clue about things they should know about in advance if they actually cared about running their business.

I love supporting small businesses, but every season a new EU legislation is coming into place, following the social media of those businesses is getting a tad too tiring and annoying to me. Everyone acts like they have no idea as to what is going on in the world, nobody seems to bother to ensure they are up to speed and ready when the time comes to implement changes.

So please, for the love of god, if you run a small business, familiarise yourself with upcoming legislations, it just makes you look unprepared and unprofessional, stop with the last minute announcements crying that you are sad you have to stop sales etc. The only one at fault is you for not knowing about and preparing for this in advance.

Ijiri Manabu spooky vibes with some bats

Since we have a bit of a bat trend going on in the sub, this is from a fashion show by Wasoukan in London (when they still operated there) a decade ago. The whole outfit was made with a bat motif rinzu, a decade later, it still impresses me because it's so rare in modern kimono. The last photo is the lining of a haori that was worn with the whole outfit, isn't it super cool?

Leaf crochet shawl pattern I posted asking about earlier

Turns out Reddit (rightfully so) does not like certain Russian websites so the post was removed when I tried to add details of my own search, but I just wanted to say that after lots of digging and google translate helping me out, I have found the original pattern designer and wanted to share some details for those who were also interested in it. No, it's not AI even if some people were adamant it was because how it "felt" to them.

The creator of this design can be found on instagram under @aishacreative and if you scroll down, they posted their design in September 2019. Since the creator is from Russia, there is no easy way to purchase the design and I will not be linking or specifying where the pattern is available again as to not attract more of the Reddit wrath.

I now have enough closeups of the shawl from different angles too so I can reverse engineer it myself when my WIP pile goes down, I'm not going to risk my card details to Russian websites sadly.

Coordinating your Taishō and Shōwa outfits

I just had this video recommended to me and although I know this book well for many years now, it seems like it has been making rounds in the influencer sphere recently so there is more clout around it now outside of Japan.

This book includes colour coordinations that were commonly seen throughout the Taishō and Shōwa periods and as many collectors often buy vintage, this is a perfect resource to help with your colour coordinations of vintage outfits to make them look more cohesive. I definitely recommend this book for those who struggle with vintage kimono coordinations!

Here is the link to the book on the publisher's website for anyone interested

Wrist warmers

I have recently been on a wrist warmers spree after digging this pair up from my gloves box. You could say it started it all, even if this was completed some time in 2013 and I never really wore them (I think it was the final moments of my lavender obsession back then and I stopped wearing the colour around that timw so I had no need for them anymore).

This one was made out of a pattern from Mollie Makes, Issue 10, but I have adapted it in my most recent projects to change the granny stitch area shape and changed the lace part to designs I have created myself (which I will share later as they need to be blocked first)

I wish I could tell you the yarn but it's been so many years. The most recent ones I have been making with Limde Hobby Lace Bloom yarn with 0.9mm hook so that would work for the project like this too.

Cute mini bag for my crochet projects

It's based on this pattern I reverse engineered but I made it slightly taller

https://theknitting4.cafe24.com/shop2/product/motif-net-bag-pdf-pattern/164/category/58/display/1/

I still need to find a light green lining fabric but I'm quite pleased with how it turned out, it now holds my most current crochet project haha

Yarn is Linde Hobby Cotton 8/4 in Algae colour, crochet hook is 2.5mm. This is deliberately smaller than the original as I wanted something small to carry my doilies projects, but the next step will be stocking up in the 8/8 version of this yarn to make a proper shopping bag because I want that too.

Toxic trait?

I found a cute crochet bag on Pinterest, followed the link to the pattern assuming it was free considering how basic the pattern is, found out it's over $5, took less than 5 mins to figure out how it's made from the image and I decided will just copy it without buying the pattern. I feel bad, but at the same time, why are we charging so much for a modified granny square and a pretty basic filet crochet-adjacent stitch? I'm still conflicted about this, but paying so much for something that took me so little to figure out on my own doesn't make sense to me. How bad do you think it is to just copy designs for your own enjoyment?

I think at minimum the background has been manipulated

The background gives me an AI ick, and there is just something about the shadows around her and on the garment that just does not make sense to me, possibly something around her head has been manipulated too. I believe the garment itself might be a real deal, AI can mimick kimono and haori better nowadays, without puckered seams and the imperfection of the collar being too short for the hem that looks like a human sewing mistake rather than AI generated.

Linde Hobby restocking issues?

I have been waiting for their Bloom Lace in a couple of colours to restock since March, had the notifications on too, but nothing. Instead, more colours went out of stock in the meantime. Messaged them on instagram today to get some sort of an estimate as to when they might restock and they have no idea, competent customer service for sure!

What is your experience with them? I used Hobbii before, but stopped because of obvious reasons, but this is starting to become quite frustrating. Any suggestions for similarly priced, Turkish made (I dunno why, but Turkish lace yarn is just superior in touch to the Indian one Hobbii sells) lace weight yarn shipping within Europe in the meantime?

Gofuku no Hi!

I heard there was a memo that we are doing the infamous Kyoetsu gingham and waves this year, so who am I to question the directive? Hahaha

I stuck some not so matching hydrangeas for the obiage an obijime I made a couple of years ago. It's a bit of a mish-mash, but I was uninspired for a nicer coord. I feel like I don't have enough very casual spring/summer obi to go with this glorious kimono, time to change that!

It's Gofuku no Hi in a couple of days!

A reminder to all because I just randomly remembered it's the end of May, so Gofuku no Hi time, I nearly missed it myself!

Are you planning a coord already? I just remembered about it, and I dunno what I have in my wardrobe to wear on the day, time to rummage through my stuff!

New release Suu yōkai obidome designs that already mostly sold out

I realised some people are not obsessively following certain kimono designers as I do, so they are yet to see those obidome (and kanzashi) masterpieces that Suu recently came up with. They definitely underestimated how popular they would get, so it took probably less than a week for them to run out of stock. They usually remake their designs, so I'm sure they will be back in stock soon, so this is your notice to start saving up for the one you like the most haha

Which one is your favourite?

I already splurged on ittan momen one and hopefully will have it in my hands just in time for some yōkai summer coordinations.

Secondly, can you name all the yōkai that they made?

Here is the link to their obidome selection, but as you will notice, most of the stuff is currently sold out.

Summer coord inspo

Inspired by u/bebetaian 's recent post. Photos in no particular order because reddit app hates me,and basically from whatever I found on my mobile, so it's a sort of limited selection, but I hope it can inspire you!

Seems like I have absolutely no choice over which photo appears in which position on the carousel, so you get the closeup first before seeing the overall look. That's reddit choice haha

So it was a Sakura Day, but since I did not want to compete with the flowers and it's the season for fuji in Japan already, I decided to go for that flower instead. Next time I will definitely choose an awase, it was so cold! I suffered for fashion in my newly purchased and retailores Kyoetsu gingham hitoe komon, and I also finally got a chance to wear my gorgeous fuji obidome.

I made a decision last minute to go for a milk tea sanbuhimo instead of lavender because the other one was getting sort of lost in the overall look, but this one stands out nicely and compliments the colour of clay used for the obidome.

I also had a bit of an accident with the zōri, after serving me well for 15 years, the sole on one completely fell off as soon as I reached the location. Fortunately, it's fixable, and depending on the new glue's durability, I will probably get some more use out of them once I reattach the sole.

I got so many compliments about the coordination and the obi, it was almost overwhelming. This obi especially is a stunner and still one of my most favourite purchases even after over a decade of owning it (and I will forever thank ichiroya for this great find)

Childhood clothing of Prince Mikasa from an old exhibition catalogue

The empress had a great taste ngl.

I was just looking through my stories on instagram this year and was reminded of this gem I found reading the newest kimono motifs publication.

I thought folks here would appreciate it too.

I so wished I knew of and visited this exhibition, looks like it was something really special!

The catalogue is available for download here: https://shozokan.nich.go.jp/research/exhibition-catalogues/object/Ex0201303/?fbclid=PAb21jcANHsV9leHRuA2FlbQIxMQABp78Giy4zf6NwMJB1F1pmJNdeRZbAmca5JW6NWdRc_1v-zLwR9vGw5i8Ag8cc_aem_BAmqnjU48uBL2wbgZyD_xQ

Some green and purple

The obiage and obijime might not make too much sense until you really zoom in on the obi design. Those grasses use so many colours! Including oranges, greens and yes, this pale sort of red that I used for obiage.

That's my favourite way to create coordinations - pick the colours used somewhere in the design in smaller amount to bring them up with obiage and obijime once again to emphasise them a little bit more. 🩷
