It's All About that Neck (Today's Attempt)

My tsukesage actually fits me, so I decided to practice with it today. My focus was on a clean ohashori and showing an good amount of neck, which I have been struggling with (possibly because I am not wrapping my nagajuban quite correctly? the eri should be going into my armpits right?)

Today's attempt features:

 • Baby's first erishin (I finally ordered one)
 • Kimono clips (ditto)
 • An incomplete otaiko (I injured my shoulder and it's stiff today, and also I'm just SO HUNGRY my patience ran out)
 • No scandalous ankles or wrists (mostly) (ok fine there's a little bit of wrist)!
 • Some neck! Giraffes beware!

One observation: I thought my nagajuban sleeves were too long in the back, because they stick out of the back of the kimono sleeves at the beginning, but by the end, they are totally fine! Wild how the size accounts for all that folding and tying.

Any observations/advice would be welcome, aside from, you know, finish the otaiko next time. We must choose our battles. What is an unfinished otaiko if not the state of our human souls on the path to nirvana.

PS: I know this kimono desperately needs to be steamed.

New release Suu yōkai obidome designs that already mostly sold out

I realised some people are not obsessively following certain kimono designers as I do, so they are yet to see those obidome (and kanzashi) masterpieces that Suu recently came up with. They definitely underestimated how popular they would get, so it took probably less than a week for them to run out of stock. They usually remake their designs, so I'm sure they will be back in stock soon, so this is your notice to start saving up for the one you like the most haha

Which one is your favourite?

I already splurged on ittan momen one and hopefully will have it in my hands just in time for some yōkai summer coordinations.

Secondly, can you name all the yōkai that they made?

Here is the link to their obidome selection, but as you will notice, most of the stuff is currently sold out.

Sakura in Kyoto

I finally, FINALLY got to travel to Japan, and I was lucky enough to be there for peak Sakura in Kyoto!!! I hunted for MONTHS to find the right kimono, size, color, motif. It came out better than I ever could have imagined. While I was researching this garment and all the items I'd need to purchase, I developed such a respect for the history and care that goes into each one. It was so much more complicated than I initially expected and I think it's so NEAT how it came to be! I've actually bought a few more and I'm trying to teach myself kitsuke now so I can wear more of these beautiful pieces <3

[Seal Script/Tensho > English] Two characters on Japanese kimono artist seal — possibly Korean name — please help identify

[Unknown > English/Japanese] Help identifying a rakkan (artist seal) on a Japanese kimono — possibly a Korean or Zainichi artist

Hello,

I'm trying to identify the artist seal (rakkan 落款) on a high-quality Japanese kimono, and I'm hoping someone here can help read the characters.

I have attached a macro photo of the seal. Thank you very much for any help.

I crocheted a haori inspired by crochet patterns from the 70s.

I freehanded this haori using measurements for a men's haori. The yarn is Berroco Tiramisu in the color way Granita.

Hello you guys probably get 101 kimono rental asks ever day but I need help 💔

It will be my first time in Japan in October, I am super super excited! We’re spending ~8 days in and around Tokyo! We (my family) were meant to go in 2021 but due to covid we couldn’t, but I’m buzzing that we’re going now! It’s for my 16th as I would never really have a party and also because it’s just something my family have wanted to do for a while

Anyway, onto my actual question 😭

As I said it’s my first time in Japan, we are planning to go to kamakura as it’s close enough to Tokyo via train, I want to do a kimono rental with the RikaWafuku company and I am honestly really nervous, I’m okay at home but when I’m on holiday I get massive anxiety about causing a fuss and getting in the way of locals, I’ve read loads of things about the kimono rentals being encouraged to tourists and they’re a must do but I’m curious if it actually bothers people? Because any time I talk to anyone about it their immediate reaction is “oh…uhm” and pulling the cultural appro priation (why does this sever block that?) card and I’m worried that they’re right :(

Also I’m kinda scared of ruining the kimono in some way like they’re super pretty and what if I get food on them?? Aaa

I could yap about this a lot I’m sorry guys but would an orange one be good for the season? Also the rikawafuku rentals are only ~$45 for hair included, all the reviews are great but I’m worried that’s too cheap 😭

Also half of the companies posts are in English but I’m worried about if they don’t? Would google translate be efficient? Also will the staff give advice because I don’t want to make a fool of myself lol

Any help or encouragement would be appreciated I’m stressing out 💔

The photos are just the vibes i want to go for lol, I added yoimiya because i love her colour palette and it fits, not because i want to replicate the style lol

Edit: the photos aren’t mine but I can’t find an origin for them :( they’re all off Pinterest though

Tailored Kimono - Advice needed

Hello, all! I am looking to get a tailored kimono from Yamato before I leave Japan for New York City, where I hope to continue the kimono hobby through occasional daily wear and stay connected to Japan through kitsuke classes. I really like vintage kimono, but I want a properly me-sized kimono to learn with and to use to compare/measure vintage pieces against.

I am going to Yamato specifically because 1) there is a store front in my small Tohoku city, and 2) I want to be able to get measured in person. Overall, I'm looking to spend between 4~5万円.

I am a bit torn on what kind of kimono to get. If you all have any thoughts or advice, I would deeply appreciate it; e.g., is there a better place I could go to? Is there some secret way I could manage to get a custom silk kimono for this budget? Can you negotiate price with the kimono shop? Is there something I'm not considering?

Option 1: Polyester awase. This will be functional in a wide range of formalities, but hot. I imagine I will probably not be able to wear it quite as much. (I hate being hot.)

Option 2: Polyester hitoe. I will probably get more wear out of this, given trends in global warming and all.... Would it really matter in all but the most formal contexts (e.g., weddings) if it's unlined?

Option 3: Cotton hitoe. This would be the coolest option, I imagine, but I would definitely not be able to wear outside of casual contexts.

I appreciate your thoughts and advice in advance!!!

Collection of Summer inspo photos

A collection of summer outfits for inspiration. Some of these photos are very dark or very old, as a few of my antique summer kimono are a bit fragile and I don't tie them often. <3 Sorry, I'm really really short on time, so I may come back by 6pm EST to edit this.

I know I have many more. I just don't think I have any photos...

I typically use a synthetic ro juban and simply change the collars. I need a new set of komono so they are all summer weight, but it is what it is.

- Summer sha with ro obi, ro obiage, open weave obijime.

- Hitoe wool with hakata obi, ro obiage, open weave obijime. I prefer Nikko geta, which are "snow geta" but the feeling of snow during summer is so welcome.

- Synthetic sha kimono with open weave obi, ro obiage, open weave obijime. The collar shown is an easy collar I made which keeps the juban from being pulled at the neck. Tie it on over undergarments at the height you want, then drape the juban and kimono over it.

- "Orochi" outfit; I made the susoyoke, a dragon scale reference to the great Orochi. Antique summer obi with very old obijime (another reference to antiquity, the "long ago" feeling) and lacquerware geta.

- Yukata over juban with Fuujin/Raijin hakata obi. Summer obijime only.

- Antique sha kimono with summer hakata obi and ro obiage, vintage uchiwa. Modelled after an outfit from ukiyo-e.

In love with this yukata, but worried it only exists as a game outfit. Where could I find it for sale?

I hope this doesn't break the rule around costume, but I'll try my luck and post anyway since I'm not trying to really dress up as a character.

I've been interested in buying/wearing a yukata for a while and I am absolutely in love with this design. The color, pattern, literally everything, I love blue so much. I think it's really beautiful, but I can't find anywhere I can purchase it, or even a similar fabric. I suppose that comes with googling "Hatsune Miku Yukata", but I'm not giving up hope yet, ehehehe.

If anyone knows where I can find this, (and not just a poor quality plastic one), I would be eternally grateful 🥲

絽 kimono and nagajuban

Hi everyone ☺️

As summer approaches, the kimono styles and fabric begin to change and im already dying of heat exhaustion here in Osaka with my awase kimono. Its my first summer with my kitsuke hobby and with my friends I'll be visiting a few places around japan in kimono and im on the hunt for summer fabrics.

Im currently looking at making a purchase of a 絽 kimono but unsure about the fabric of the nagajuban underneath.

Does the nagajuban for a 絽 kimono also have to be 絽?

Can you wear a regular cotton or polyester nagajuban with it ? Since 絽 can be kinda see-through im a bit conscious of how it might look since its my first summer kimono.

Any insight is helpful!

Thank you

Kimono origins

Hi, I was gifted this kimono set from some people at my church. I was wondering what period it came from. I figure it’s a casual one. It has a lining. I attempted to tie the belt. It also came with these fancy shoes and purse. Also, how much do you think it’s worth?

Datejime alternatives?

Does anyone of any alternatives to datejime due to them being difficult to find and being crazy expensive?

I have most of my kitsuke items except for the datejime. Do I even need it to wear a kimono successfully?

Question about Stains/mold on second hand haori.

We came back from Japan yesterday, and finally unpacked everything. I bought this haori at a flee market close to Ueno for 1500yen.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have a good enough look inside 😭 It is so so beautiful on the outer side ❤️🥹

I tried to google what to do with stains on haori. I’ve put it out on the balcony for airing and sprayed with 50/50 vinegar/water. I understood that I’d have to do it several times for several days.

But can anyone maybe tell me if it’s worth saving? The stains are everywhere. 🥹

Purchased this haori today outside of Higashi Hongan-ji Temple from a nice old man. Kinkaku-ji on the inner lining.

Kimono origins?

Hello Reddit!
My husband bought a second-hand kimono for me in Kyoto from a small antiques shop on Philosopher’s road. It’s beautiful but he doesn’t know much about it.
Anyone know how I can identify its origins/date?
Its in really great condition, could have been made recently for all I know, but I am curious!
Any help would be appreciated.
P.D. I am terrified of unfolding it but will if its necessary to ID 😅

Anybody ever used a Mannequin or a bodice to practice tying the obi?

I honestly want to get better tying musubi on so many different types of obi. However my back is getting wrose and I have a hard time standing for a long period of time with no breaks. I'm thinking about getting a Mannequin or a bodice for practice and I'm just wondering, has anybody ever done this and what is your experience? 😊

Today's attempt (Time Trial Edition)

Warning: Ankles (gasp)

Today, I had a vision and a bedtime, so I set a timer and raced to get this on in a normal amount of time instead of fussing over the ohashori for 2 hours and falling into a depression. The result: A colorful mess!

A friend chose this kimono for me, and I never would have chosen it for myself, but I absolutely adore it despite the fact it's definitely too short lol. BUT it is a perfect chance to show off a pair of sparkly pink shoes I have...

I was considering a pink obijime, but the green called to me.

The kimono continue to win, but they don't know that I play Sekiro and I love dying repeatedly to the same boss battle over and over.
