Has anyone successfully removed mothball smell from washing machine?

I washed a kimono in my machine a couple of days ago and the machine smelled strongly of chemicals after. I’ve thrown away the load and done a number of empty 90 degree washes using different cleaning products and vented inbetween (vinegar, baking soda, dettol 5in1 cleaner and Dylon machine cleaner). I’ve cleaned the drawer, seal and filter. The smell has drastically reduced but I think it still lingers, though my husband says he can’t smell it anymore.

I’m nervous to use the machine until the smell has 100% gone as I have a 3 month old baby and I don’t want to contaminate their clothing.

Has anyone successfully removed the smell? Is there anything else I should try? Or is this a lost cause.

The machine is only a year old, would cost £350ish to replace and recycle of the old one.

Thank you so much for any advice 🙏

Thoughts on wearing a women's kimono in men's style.

I have been wearing Kimono daily for about 2 years now and I've come to the conclusion that I enjoy wearing many women's kimono. I'm a rather tall person and the length on most women's kimono fit me perfectly. The only downside is the small sleeves. I was just curious about what others thought on my style.

Independence Day festival in yukata!

Last night my twin sister and I went to our local Independence Day firework festival and I went with my firework yukata with a red heko obi! 🇺🇲 🎆🎇👘🎉

Honestly I was rushed to put on my yukata and tie my obi since our ride was waiting for awhile while I was getting ready, so my oshori isn't really straight as I wanted and my emon is a little short and my poor musubi isn't straight and I accidentally crused it in the car while getting in (I have back problems, so it can be challenging getting in and out in the car). But I managed it very well! And I was so comfortable walking around in it even though it was 95 degrees fahrenheit (35 degrees celsius) with hardly any sea breeze from the bay. I had such a wonderful time with my twin sister and I got a lot of compliments on my yukata! People here just call it a kimono, I just let them call it a kimono even though I did tell a couple of people that it's a cotton yulata which is apart of the kimono family... hopefully I gave them the right information without confusing them. 😊

Anyways. I made my red white and blue flower kazari himo and my 250 netsuke! surprisingly the netsuke stayed in my heko obi the whole time.

I did get asked if I was very hot in my yukata and surprisingly I was comfortable. I did sweat a lot because of the high humidity and my sunburn from earlier that day, but the heat wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. 😅

One of my fav yukata

Despite being one of my fave yukata. This series is honestly a pain in the oshiri. I got it during a 1g 1yen and 1g 20yen promo 3 years back. This is actually a defunct brand and I finally understood why when I got quite a collection of it. All of them bled seriously. Especially all the different reds... Blues....purples, oranges. Their designs are really awesome though. I was almost tempted to buy the same design in different colours. The only way for them to stop colour transfers is to get a specific liquid. Can't remember what it was as the hubs got it for me.

Actually.... This yukata still has red dye transfers on the white lines.

I wore this coord for my lesson a few weeks back.

Casual pre-summer fit

After a year of this yukata sitting in my closet, I finally got around to lengthening the yuki enough for me to comfortably wear it (I don’t like short yuki even on Yukata.)

Also didn’t notice how crumpled my tiny ohashori was until after taking photos lol Yukata is hard to keep them from wrinkling and the ohashori from lifting.

Since it’s still technically hitoe season I paired it with grey haneri and tabi.

The obi is an antique - the width and length is a bit shorter than usual so it was interesting tying it. Had to redo it a few times to get it how I wanted it.

How do I solve this problem with Sou_Japan?

How do I solve this problem with Sou_Japan?

I've got this problem with the seller Sou_Japan on Ebay. I'm in Poland, and I previously bought from them, shipping to me was no problem.

Now when I put my real address in, the site says they have no products for sale available, but when I put that I'm in the US they have all their usual stuff up there, all their products show up normally.

I want to buy from them, but how can I do this when I can't list my actual address on there?

Did any of you have the same problem? If so, how did you fix it?

I'm sorry if I made any mistakes, English isn't my first language 😅.

Yukata Season "Technical Questions"

So, Summer Yukata Season is pretty much upon us, so I've got a couple Questions about what should or should NOT be worn with (MEN'S) Yukata as "casualwear":

  1. Tabi - Yes/No? It seems that Tabi are far more commonplace on Women's feet than Men's except for More Up-Dress situations.
  2. Juban - Yes/No? Do men wear Juban under Yukata? I mean, *I* typically DON'T, but I'm pretty Casual with my Wafuku.

I'm planning to attend the Obon Festival at my local Japanese Garden in August, and want to make sure that my Kitsuke is Correct, or at least close to it. I just got a new "fancy" Yukata for this year's Festival (after the Festival, it goes into regular rotation) and a Kaku Obi that both matches and contrasts. It was a $150 cash-outlay, but am willing to spend more if I can find some 29cm "golden-yellow" tabi to wear with my waraji (if you've got an Online Source for colored Tabi other than Black or Navy, please let me know). I'd like to be More Certain than I am that I'm doing things Right. I don't mind breaking a convention or 2 here or there, but I prefer to do it consciously than ignorantly...

Advice on that chic 1930s otaiko?

Anyone have advice on that chic 1930s otaiko? I should probably look it up on youtube, but I couldn't replicate it via photos. If I do make the right 'image,' I know it isn't tied correctly at all. Couldn't be. Move, and it would fall apart.

I know the makura was a much different shape so I'm going to have to make one. I'm thinking of a process akin to making a tailour's ham. But how to get those straight lines into such a rounded shape? And the proportions correct? I can see from the inspiration that the obi is wider than modern nagoya obi. To recreate it, I'd need at least 8" wide and to tie it much higher up on the body.

The original photo looked yellow-gold, but I've been buying kimono online for too long to expect that. It is actually a deadleaf yellow instead of ochre. Since the inspo nakagi looks orange, I went with peach to match the muted yellow-tan colour. I need to get a coveted red/white clouds obiage!

There are quite a few small stains or places where the dye has run, but I'm not too bothered. I'll have some flaws too if I get to the 90s.

The antique image is from 1932's "Wedding Ceremony Must Know", posted by Naomi no Kimono Asobi on flickr.

Love that this made it to Wimbledon

By @hanayagi for Naomi Osaka at Wimbledon Edit : I should have added that the designer makes dresses from repurposed wedding gowns and traditional ceremonial garments. I love that all of this was repurposed, zero waste aesthetic and debuted at Wimbledon ( worked in the fashion industry for decades )

Books on kimono tailoring and sewing?

Hey team :)

I’ve been in the habit of making yukata for myself and I would like to expand my skillset to tailoring kimono and also making kimono for larger people. Does anyone know of a good book or resource for learning this?

Found a kimono thrifting And saw hand stitching on a few parts

I bought this kimono at Halloween sale in Arizona and I knew as soon as I held it It was more than a costume piece. It was legit whatever it was and I didn't know for sure and then as I looked it over a little more I was like "oh I know this is a vintage kimono of some sort." and started looking it over more. I knew it was something worthwhile so I kind of just put it in the cart and then did my normal things paid for the kimono and whatever else and then got home and I haven't really had time to take detailed pictures of it until just now.

I'd like to see what yall say because I ran it through Google and I don't know if Google's right more than 25% of the time. So any and all information on what this kimono is enlightening and any help on value/worth too would be much appreciated. I know the open underarm is for women and children? because they have to readjust their kimono pretty often. At least that's kind of what I remember... I have done a little bit of research. I just haven't had a lot of time to do so.

I'm more likely trying to sell it too. So if any of y'all are interested let me know and give me some time to figure what a fair deal would be. what it's worth. I'm just glad I saved it from the thrift store and the costume aisle

New Hige Haori

What can I say? I just really dig the Hige weaves. This IS, however, notably beardy-er than my Grey Hitoe Hige Kimono, and a little softer, too. Both are real silk (I don't buy/wear polyester), but the Haori feels more like it may have been woven of Habutae - anyone know if that's a Thing?

To paraphrase Edith from Despicable Me: It's so beardy that I'm gonna die! :D

First time I went to the nearby beach in yukata!

This evening I decided to practice my kitsuke for an upcoming Independence Day festival on the 4th. Tonight I decided to put on my shell yukata and white heko obi from Kimonomachi. I absolutely love the yukata, however It's a bit big on me since it's a 3L. I'm in the weird "in between" sizes between a LL and a 3L, I'm also like that on my regular clothes. Im a Large, an XL and a 2XL... guess because it's my weird round shape. Lol! 🤷‍♀️

Meanwhile, I followed everyone's advice on here about putting on big kimono and yukata. I folded the ohashori where it's long enough for my index finger and I clipped the fabric on my elastic korin belt and hid the rest under my Obi-ta and heko obi. I use a type of korin where it wraps around you and clips the collars on the ends. It actually works wonders even though my ohashori did shift a little bit when I was walking on the sand, but not as much and nothing fell out of place. The one thing I wonder if that is it normal for the korin belt to stick out a little bit under the open arm pits? 🤔 I did notice but I tried to hide it with my obi.

Another question too is that is it normal for the top part of the yukata to feel loose? I guess because I'm not used to such loose clothing, but I'm just wonder because it might be too big especially on the sholders? I do want to point out that the sleeves are pretty long where they are just right above my wrist. Hopefully it's just normal and I'm not used it to.

Anyways, it was such a nice night and I did get a few looks from shoobies (tourist) when I was down there and the weather was pretty decent since it was a very hot earlier today.

I also wore my horseshoe crab pin on my pink obijime that was given to me by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service a few years ago when I reported a tagged horseshoe crab. It looked amazing with my beach themed yukata and I'm planning wearing more down at the bay! 🥰

I do want to thank everyone on helping me out on how to put on bigger kimono. 😁

Furisode photoshoot durring cherry blossom season!

I've finally worked up the courage to post photos of myself, but a few months ago I had a photographer friend offer to take shots of me with the DC cherry blossoms! I decided this would be a nice time to use my pink furisode and pair it with a new obi I had just gotten and I got so so many compliments and felt very pretty 🥹

Note: IM VERY AWARE MY OBI SANK DOWN 😭😭😭 I tried my very hardest to get it to stay up but it ended up sinking down and sitting over my waist instead of staying up against my ribcage and I'm very heartbroken over this 💔 pls don't mention it or I might cry (kidding! Maybe...)

I think the one at the waterfall and the candid photo at the train station ended up being one of my favorites (even though it was the end of the day and I was tired and my obi was at my freaking butt by then lol)

Kimono Workshop

I was asked to do a kimono workshop for a women’s group last weekend. I was ambitious and thought I could do 2 stylings, but I only did one due to all of the questions I was asked. I wanted to show those who are reluctant to try kimono that there are different ways to work kimono into your life. This particular styling was something I thought of while listening to 80s music (Karyn White, Madonna). I was also thinking about my maiko kimono dressing class and put this together. It also happened to work really well with the model’s natural hairstyle.
