Late night spin
Finally got a chance to sit down and drop the needle. Loving how the AR-5s sound in this space. What’s everyone spinning tonight?

Following up on my original post about the pair of AR-5s I picked up. https://www.reddit.com/r/vintageaudio/comments/1vglli4/just_picked_up_a_pair_of_ar5s/.
Both tweeters test fine in isolation, 5.7 and 5.9 ohms DCR, consistent whether measured at the front terminal tabs or directly on the driver terminals. The 4uF caps read open as expected. The level control pots aren't the original AR attenuators, I went ahead and cleaned both pots thoroughly with DeoxIT.
Despite everything testing clean electrically, both speakers still have the identical no-highs symptom, which makes me think this is one systemic issue rather than two separate unrelated failures.
Both speakers were clearly serviced by AR at some point, the woofer and tweeter both carry "Service Replacement Unit" stickers.
Given the pots are now clean and tested consistent, and every driver and cap checks out, what else commonly causes a total loss of highs on these that wouldn't show up on a static resistance test?
Appreciate any insight from folks who've been inside these crossovers before.
Picked up a pair of Acoustic Research AR-5s last week. As expected for their age, they’re going to need some work, but all the drivers seem intact. This set has two exposed wires running on the front baffle. Has anyone run into this specific variation before? Wondering if it was a specific factory production run or a previous owner's mod/repair.
Got it hooked up with my Klipsch KG4s. Currently working on building some stands for the speakers, but wanted to share a shot of the space.
Hey everyone, I’m looking for some advice on my next cartridge move.
I’m currently running a modified Acoustic Research AR-XA with an aftermarket Audio-Technica tonearm. I’m currently using an AT-VMN95SH (Shibata) stylus as my primary, which I love for its smooth, midrange-forward sound.
My AT-VMN95ML stylus recently bit the dust, and I’m debating my next move: Should I just grab a new AT-VMN95ML? Or, should I look at a completely different brand for a new flavor? I’ve been eyeing the Sumiko Rainier. Anyone has experience with this cartridge?
Hey everyone, looking for some opinions on a speaker pairing. I’m currently running a Yamaha CR-600 receiver and integrating a subwoofer into the setup.
I have access to three pairs of speakers right now and am trying to decide which to keep long-term:
KLH Model Six (Early sealed version, fully recapped and woofers resealed) Large Advent / OLA (Recapped and refoamed) ADS L620
Right now, I’m leaning toward the KLH Sixes. They have a fantastic, smooth midrange that just works perfectly for vocal-heavy tracks, jazz, and blues.
For anyone who has lived with these pairs especially paired with mid-70s Yamaha gear what are your thoughts?
Appreciate any insights.
Added a couple upgrades to the setup
KLH Model 6 sealed version that I recapped and sealed the woofer and a Yamaha CR-600. The Yamaha still needs new lamps, but it’s up and running and sounds great.
