I figured I'd share the story of my PC. I'm not even sure if it still counts as the same PC at this point it has gone through so many iterations you'll see what I mean.

From 2012 to 2017 I was using a laptop with a weak 3rd-gen mobile i5 and some AMD GPU I can't even remember. In 2017, after getting my first paycheck, I finally built my first desktop: an i5-7600, GTX 1060 6GB, and 16GB of RAM.

By summer 2025 I realized the whole system was getting pretty outdated, so I started upgrading it piece by piece. I honestly wouldn't recommend doing it this way - it's much cheaper to decide on your final build first and then buy everything for that.

The first thing I did was buy a 27" 1440p monitor. Then I picked up a Ryzen 5 1600, an air cooler (which I'm still using today), and an MSI A520M-A Pro motherboard. I sold my old Intel platform.

My old system had 4×4GB of RAM, but the new motherboard only had two DIMM slots, so I had to buy a 2×16GB kit (September 2025, around 40 bucks). Around the same time I also bought a 1TB NVMe SSD for 35 bucks. Now these prices looks like a joke.

I quickly realized the Ryzen 5 1600 wasn't going to last very long, so I sold it and upgraded to a Ryzen 5 5600.

Next came the GPU. I decided to finally buy my dream graphics card - a GTX 1080 Ti - after selling my GTX 1060. Since the 1080 Ti needed additional PCIe power connectors, I also had to replace my PSU with 700W one. Pro tip: buy a modular PSU. You'll thank yourself later.

Literally a week later, NVIDIA announced that the GTX 10-series would no longer receive Game Ready driver updates. That timing hurt.

In spring 2026 I decided it was time for a newer GPU and bought an Intel Arc B580. For 1440p it was honestly an amazing card. The only downside was UE5 games - they suffered from poor optimization, with stuttering, freezes, and lower FPS than expected.

So I replaced it with an RTX 5060.

That turned out to be the worst decision I made for 1440p.

Since my motherboard only supported PCIe 3.0, while the RTX 5060 used PCIe 5.0 (and only an x8 interface), I ended up replacing the motherboard too with a Gigabyte B550M K, giving me PCIe 4.0 support.

At this point it's almost impossible to calculate how much money I spent after all the buying and selling. But I'm pretty sure if I'd just bought my current setup from the beginning, it would've been significantly cheaper. So... learn from my mistakes. 😄

Finally, I rebuilt everything into a different case (last photo shows the old and new ones—the new one is just some generic Accord case). My old Thermaltake Core X1 had fantastic airflow, but it took up way too much space, and after all these years the plastic had become so brittle that it would crack from even light pressure.

The new case is mounted underneath my desk on a bracket, which freed up a lot of desk space.

I also disabled the lighting on my CPU cooler because it's only RGB instead of ARGB, so it couldn't match the rest of the system. I actually think it looks much cleaner with the lights turned off than with mismatched colors.

The final build:

Решил поделиться историей своего ПК (не уверен можно ли считать его как один, он пережил столько итераций, сейчас поймете).

С 2012 по 2017 год сидел на ноуте, доходяга на мобильных i5 3 поколения и какой-то видяхе от амд. В 2017 году с первой зарплаты купил себе i5-7600, 1060 6gb, 16gb ram. Летом 2025 подумал, что это все уже безнадежно устарело и начался мой процесс по переходу на другое железо поэтапно (не советую так делать, лучше обозначить конечную сборку и брать ее).

Что я сделал сначала: Купил монитор 27 дюймов 1440p и купил комплект Ryzen 5 1600 + кулер (который стоит до сих пор) + мать A520M-A Pro от MSI за 5000 рублей. Свою основу продал. Стояла оперативка 4х4, а в новой матери было лишь 2 слота, пришлось брать комплект 2х16 (сентябрь 2025 3500 рублей). Тогда же взял М2 ссд на терабайт за 2500. Решил, что на 1600-ом долго не протяну - продал его и купил на авито 5600 за 8000 рублей. Дальше видеокарта, решил взять свою мечту и купил 1080ti за 12000 рублей продав свою 1060 за 6000 рублей. У 1080ti требуется доп питание, пришлось брать новый блок (берите модульный, иначе пожалеете). Буквально через неделю нвидиа сказали, что на 10 серию драйверов больше не будет =(

Весной 2026 решил брать видеокарту свежее, купил Intel ARC B580. Это было лучшее решение для 1440p. Была у нее проблема - плохая оптимизация под игры на UE5 (статтеры, фризы, низкий фпс). Решил поменять ее на RTX 5060 (28000 рублей). Это было худшее решение для 1440p. Ну так у матери поддержка PCI-E 3.0, а у карты аж 5.0 поэтому купил и новую мать Gigabyte B550M K за 7500 рублей с поддержкой PCI-E 4.0. Сложно сейчас посчитать весь бюджет со всеми покупками и продажами, но если бы я брал конечный сетап изначально, то вышло бы явно дешевле, поэтому лучше так не делайте :)

В конце концов было принято решение пересобрать все в другой корпус (последнее, фото старый и новый корпус(какой-то Accord за 1500 рублей)) потому что старый Thermaltake Core X1 хоть и отлично продувается, но занимает слишком много места и весь пластик с годами высох и от легкого воздействия просто ломается. Новый на кронштейне закреплен под столом. Подствеку на кулере проца отключил, потому что она просто RGB, а не ARGB и лучше на мой взгляд без нее, чем с непопадающим цветом.

Конечный сетап такой:

А у вас какие истории о сборке своего пк?

So, buying cheap non-module PSU was a mistake. Lots of unused cables that take free space. But I kinda managed it. What makes me angry is the fact that all parts are black and cables are different colours. Any way to make them black and not even more ugly? Electrical tape come to my mind but cables near MB power connector are wider and it’s not working well with regular tape.

My parents cleaned their house and asked if I still need this old pc which I haven’t used for 14 years now. And I’d like to boot it up to check how it was back then. The problem is I can’t make it to show any image. GPU has HDMI and when I connect it to TV or main monitor it says that device is connected for a second but still gives me no image. All I know it has AMD Athlon 64 x2, MSI Radeon 6770, 3 gb of DDR2.
What I have done: changed bios battery to a new one, checked which CPU it has and changed thermal paste, tried to boot with one RAM stick (tried both of them separately in different slots). Fans on CPU and GPU are spinning and cpu gets hot when booting up. It even has fan on HDD and it spins too. Do I have to find cable and plug displays to motherboard? It has no debug leds or buzzer to know what exactly is wrong.

Хочется что-то из пве но друзья все нищуки поэтому так чтобы с рандомами интересно было играть. Что выбрать? Helldivers 2 (ждать распродажи) или Space Marine 2 (брать по скидке сейчас)? Или еще варианты есть? Всякие peak, rv there yet и Deep rock galactic уже наигрались, не советуйте плз 🙃
