Please share your ratings and bands, and the discipline you applied under.

Edit: please also share if you got the award or not, as well as your year when you applied (undergrad, gap year, grad).

We need more data to investigate any patterns in ratings/bands, so please self-report if you feel comfortable. By comparing with a few applicants already, I have already noticed a few things.

  • Higher ratings (i.e. more "excellent"s) does not consistently result in a higher applicant band
  • Possible bias in applicant band by discipline or by reviewer harshness (need more data to confirm)
  • Amount of reviewers varies wildly, I have seen 2 to 5 so far.
  • Awardees seem to generally come from Applicant Band 1. Don't know anything about HMs yet (other than I was band 3 and was rejected).

(17k) how to time a playlist for the ceremony?

my fiancé and i hired a small jazz trio for our reception, but for our ceremony are going to play something through my laptop connected to the venue's speakers.

does anyone have advice on how to make a playlist for this and time everything correctly? especially like, the classic wedding march... how do you know what time is going to be the right time for certain songs in a playlist?

we aren't doing a rehearsal, to save money, and i'm realizing now that's kind of a problem because it's the only way i can think of to make sure timing is right.

I'm giving a presentation to undergrad research students tomorrow on preparing for grad school applications. Anything you wish you would have known back then?

They're in a mostly direct admit and very applied science field. I have lots of slides already, but I want some other perspectives so I can help these guys the best I can!

We're in the US btw.

How to find herbarium jobs?

Hi, I'm interested in living or nonliving plant collections curation as a possible career (herbaria are my favorite!). Is there any central platform where these kinds of jobs are listed, or would it just be ecolog?

I'm getting my Ph.D. in biology and hope to become a professor and herbarium curator. If I can't find a teaching job after I defend, I'd be totally fine working in a lower level role in plant collections elsewhere (or you know, if I can't cut it in a Ph.D. and need to get a job).

Please don't remind me that this is a niche field with few jobs - I am aware!

Lunch specials in town?

I know about:

- Local Whiskey: $7.59 for burger (sometimes it's chicken sandwich), fries, and a drink

- India Pavlion: $15.95 for an Indian buffet, 11:30am-2:30pm every day except Tuesday.

- Tadashi on Atherton: $15.99 for three small rolls, miso soup, and salad, 11am-3pm.

- Cozy Thai: $12-15 for two mini curries and soup, 11am-2pm. I can't remember the exact dollar amount but will update the next time I go.

What other lunch specials in the area have you folks found?
