Don’t sleep on the 78 Special at L&M

Title says it all. I haven’t seen this breakfast sammy mentioned in the sub so much, but boy is it good.

Fried egg, cheddar, bacon, hashbrown, and the star of the show… Thai chili jam for that sweet n spicy affair.

The biscuits are pretty good here too and make for solid custom sandwiches.

Needless to say, I love L&M.

Literacy and the downfall of the spelling monopoly

Hello fellow dads and lurking moms (I know you’re there!!)

My 4 year old son is hungry for literacy. While this is a welcome development, I weep because he is starting to decipher his parents’ code language and now we need to learn a new method. This weekend he correctly guessed “mountain” after we spelled it in the car.

What have you guys done to get around the loss of spelling-things-out? Learn French? Sign language? Looking deeply into your spouse’s eyes to send mental messages that are wildly misinterpreted??

Also, if anyone has any early stage reading suggestions, throw them at me.

Bringing the orphica concept to a different outcome than the keytar

So for the uninitiated, the image is an instrument called an orphica. It’s an 18th century portable piano.

I have been inspired- why not build something like this that’s got something like 6 strings and use ones that can be manipulated by hand. Throw some pickups on there and bam, you’ve got a wacky keytar that’s not a MIDI system.

I know piano strings are typically much higher tension than guitar strings, but that just probably requires some modifications to the hammer setup.

911 responses in medical situations?

Anyone have any situations where they needed to call 911 due to a medical situation, and not only did it take several minutes to get through, but once you did, the help on the other end was actually not helpful at all?

A friend of ours recently told us that someone was having a medical emergency in their neighborhood, and ran into exactly this situation. Luckily, a doctor lives in the neighborhood and responded in the immediate, but when the 911 operator finally picked up, they immediately told them to start giving chest compressions (and it was not the thing to be doing at that stage). The doctor told them they were wrong and so the 911 operator just hung up on them.

Like wtf. I imagine that being a 911 responder is not an easy job, nor is it something a lot of people want to do, but it should not be taking this long to get help, nor should it be so off the mark.

Adapted nightstand project

I built a nightstand to go with the bed I built for my son (which itself was part of a convertible crib project that was the second thing I’ve made). The plans I used were adapted; I shortened the depth by 2-3 inches or so, and added some minor pizazz to frame on the drawer front. Used leftover scraps of cherry and maple that I had from the bed project (also pictured). Lucked my way into some small portions of curly maple that give it some fun accents.

The horizontals are all 3/4” plywood panels, as are the sides of the drawer case. Drawer bottom is 1/4” plywood. Drawer sides are solid cherry.

I let the drawer front overhang the edge to function as the drawer pull. Tbd if I end up hating that feature or not… may result in doing a little bit of routing to bring the edges in a bit.

Next time around, I’d probably bookmatch the drawer front, but I also like having it look semi-continuous from top to bottom. I’d probably finger joint the drawers next time, but time is limited when you’ve got a 4 and 2 year old running around.

Sanded to 220 before applying oil-based poly. Did 2 coats and sanded to 320 between applications. 3rd coat was a roughly 50/50 mix with mineral spirits to help get that nice smooth surface.

On to the next project (a Stratocaster-type guitar!)
