Best apt cooling hacks for the heat wave that never ends?

Title sums it up well. We’re in a rent control apartment that has a full wall of south facing floor to ceiling windows 🥵

Current set up is two SPF large patio umbrellas tilted to block the direct sun beams, fully roll down the blinds + close the blackout curtains, have all ceiling fans and floor fans running, and run our roller a/c unit that pipes out the side window.

Even with all this, it will be 80 degrees on a good day in the house (much warmer than being outside in shade).

Any other tried and true hacks out there that’s helping us non-central air dwellers cool? TBH, we just wanna make sure our pup has optimal comfort if there’s more we can do (she has her own cooling mat and setup to stay super cool on top of everything already listed)

Looking for any tips or tricks anyone else

New coffee shop at 16th and Wilshire

Wellside Cafe soft opened Saturday at the NW corner of 16th and Wilshire. Had solid foot traffic that day even without promoting the open.

Some immediate pluses:

  1. Offers a discount to healthcare workers (perf since they’re situated in a hotbed of medical facilities and hospital - get your coffee cheaper!)
  2. Thicc food menu offerings (come in clutch for a quick breakfast or lunch situation)
  3. Will be introducing more vegan and gluten free baked goods to the bar soon (as a dietary nightmare, I’m personally thrilled to have an option with my coffee).

They serve Groundworks beans (edited to update my sleepy misnaming). My oat milk was Minority Figures (one of my fav oat milks), so def have quality products in house.

Parking feels like it’ll be a nightmare in that stretch, but I always find a spot (metered or not) on 16th.

We live in one of the coolest corners of the world, but I tend to find myself doing a lot of the same things on repeat. So wanted to poll the community - what’s your perfect day in the Santa Monica area? Here for the niche, the odd, or the most detailed itineraries.

For all those brave Costco MDR/CC weekend warriors - gas is temp closed. I asked if it they’re opening at all today and store entry employee said probably not since the gas area lost power.

Apple Watch Series 6 loses its mind and calls 911 on repeat

Has this ever happened to you…?

Sitting here eating dinner, no weird pressure on the watch, and I start hearing a loud countdown from my watch. It’s the emergency services alert and counting down to calling 911. The exit/cancel buttons up top are non responsive. I just started holding down side buttons to get it to stop from calling. When I let go to try to figure out what to do, it hits zero and calls 911. Two times. I hung up just in time the first time but not the second. Had to tell the operator it’s not an emergency, panic grab my phone and turn it off to cut cell signal from calling back. Thankfully my partner came into the room to offer another hand and figure out a force reset.

But hey, at least I got to learn emergency contacts absolutely get the alert (freaking my family across the country out).

WatchOS is on 26.5. No physical or water damage to the watch. First time having it lose its mind.

Looking for two good samaritans at HopCat during the Great Lakes Crossing shooting

A childhood friend just posted this on Facebook today. I wanted to share here, so if you or anybody you know may meet the description of the two people who helped out her family during this stressful time, I’d love to connect you with her 🫶

Deal for students at Sweetfin

Money is tight and it’s too hot to cook. I came to get takeout and missed this until after I already cashed out. Pretty good deal for students of all levels!

Stolen bike (6/29/26) in Montana/Ocean area (Santa Monica)

EDIT: neighbor found footage of the bike rolling away/pic in comments.

Neighbor had his bike stolen yesterday morning (6/29/26) near Ocean/Montana in Santa Monica. Stock image of his bike; had a large holder bag on the back rack.

Super low expectations it will a) be spotted or b) be retrievable, but the internet has done wilder things!

More sweet treats coming to Montana Ave

Thankful my algorithm is starting to pick up new SM business announcements. Neptune’s Frozen Treats is coming to Montana Ave (they didn’t say a date in the post) at 11th St. Sure, we need another ice cream shop like we need another bagel spot, optometrist or mattress store, but I’ll take more ice cream options any day. 🍦🍦🍦
