Does increasing pure fat increase isotretinoin side effects?
I’m currently on Accutane, and I’ve been tracking how dietary fat affects my tolerance and skin response (specifically pure fat like extra virgin olive oil).
At 60 mg/day, I was consistently taking my dose with a high-fat meal, usually 4 soft-boiled eggs plus a 15 ml shot of extra virgin olive oil. At that point, side effects were present but very manageable.
At this stage, my face was already clear. However, I still experimented with fat intake because I have a naturally very oily T-zone and, for some reason, I wanted to see if I could “optimize” absorption further or reduce oiliness more.
I increased the extra virgin olive oil to 30 ml while keeping everything else the same (4 eggs, same dose). Within about a week, I noticed a clear worsening in dryness and irritation. I developed a flare of retinoid dermatitis on my neck (which I previously got under control with a short course of topical steroid prescribed by my dermatologist).
While dealing with that, I lowered my dose to 40 mg/day and reduced the olive oil back to 15 ml. The irritation cleared up fairly quickly.
Later, still on 40 mg/day, I thought: since the dose is lower, maybe I can try increasing absorption again using pure fat. So I went back to 4 eggs plus a 30 ml shot of extra virgin olive oil.
Once again, within about a week, I developed the same type of dermatitis on my neck, and this time I also had a few small patches on my face.
The only variable I’ve been changing is the amount of pure fat (specifically extra virgin olive oil), while everything else has stayed the same.
This got me thinking:
Has anyone noticed that increasing fat intake—especially pure oils like olive oil—seems to increase side effects or irritation on isotretinoin, possibly due to increased absorption?
Also, is there any difference between taking the dose with whole food fats (like eggs + nuts, ~20g fat total) versus taking it with added pure oil shots? My dermatologist said whole food fats would be better, but didn’t really explain why.
Is it possible that higher fat intake—specifically pure fat like olive oil—could increase absorption enough to noticeably worsen side effects, even when the dose itself is unchanged?
If anyone has any experience or insight, I’d appreciate it
Fat amount changes everything
been on 60 mg for 3 months, i took my pills with breakfast which was always 4 soft boiled eggs and 20ml shot of extra virgin olive oil.
one day i decided to go even further, same 4 eggs but fried with an additional 30ml shot of extra virgin olive oil
within a week started getting more and more dryness side effects and developed a pretty bad retinoid dermatitis on my neck ( had to lower lower fat amount + my dose to 40 + use a steroid cream with an ungodly amount of moisturizer )
all healed
now still at 40mg decided to bring back the fat, once again within a week got more dry and stuff but manageable, i am very tempted to go back to 60 mg, however im pretty sure thats not a reasonable idea
anyone else experimented with fat intake?
i literally get a crush on most guys on the street :/
Thoughts?
for more than a week been dealing with this on my neck, it gets worse if i apply anything other than cerave cream
*most water based lotions cerave pm, cerave moisturizing lotion or pure glycerin make it flare up even more but in a weird way, like it seems calm everything down at first but at the end of the day especially after cleansing it gets SO red
i’m 4 months into my course, 1st month was 40, then upped to 60 till now, at the start i was 55 kg now i am 51kg *intentional
my face is fine, dry n all but all of good, neck is not however:(
i do take antihistamines daily and have been doing so since the very start
any thoughts?
ps. i’m very knowledgeable about accutane but rn i cant think of a way to beat this and am getting stressed
* i still love accutane tho
