What was the best deal you ever found?

A year out of college, thirty years ago, my wife and I found two lounge chairs and an ottoman for $700. The leather was a mess on both, but the wood was in reasonably good shape. We agonized about spending that much money but that was probably the best deal I could ever hope to get.

Beware of Immitations

Considering how much space in this sub is devoted identifying fakes, I thought this Herman Miller poster from 1963 would be interesting. This is in the 2006 book on the Eames Lounge Chair.

Geiger concept art for Star Wars?

When I was a kid, my mom gave me a book of concept illustrations for Star Wars. As a kid I was really disappointed because they looked only vaguely like the movie. Only later as I became aware did I realize the significance of these illustrations and their artist H. R. Geiger . . . or so I thought. I learned today that, at least according to the internet, Geiger never did concept art for Star Wars. Did I hallucinate that as a nine year old? Would that have been another artist? It sure looks like Geiger in my memory. Please, someone, tell me my life has not been a lie.

Table suggestions to go with walnut DCW

I am an architect and designer. I recently bought a matched set of five 2nd-generation walnut Eames DCWs. The Eames designed a bent plywood leg table to match the DCW, they called the DTW Eames DTW Table, Eames Wood L-Leg Table - Eames.com but it was only briefly produced, rarely photographed, never knocked-off and frankly, was kind of a dog. When one searches for images of the DCW, it is rarely ever paired with the DTW. In fact, it is rarely paired with anything. Just do an image search now for DCW (go ahead and try it, I'll wait) and you'll find them mostly pictured in isolation. This is one of the most comfortable chairs ever designed, but I think it has suffered from the fact that the Eames never designed a suitable table for it. So I'm curious to know if others have confronted this problem? What table did you pair it with? Are you happy with the pairing? Or are you still frustrated by the mismatch. Would you have been interested in the DTW table, or do you agree that it was never the equal of the DCW.

First night out on the Jones LWB with the new SON 28 Dynamo hub and Exposure Revo light.

Filtering water from Green Lake after heavy storms Wednesday night. The Jones and particularly the new dynamo and Exposure Revo worked like a champ! The SON 28 delivered just enough juice to power front and rear lights with a little left over for a battery.

Paul Klampers or Growtac Equals on an Ti LWB with a truss fork?

I’m thinking of upgrading my Shimano mechanical brakes with either the Growtac or Paul Klampers. Curious if anyone has used them on an LWB. Did they fit without any problem. Did you like them?

Best battery to use with dynamo hub?

I just got a new dynamo hub. I will use it to run lights, but during the day, I’ll charge a battery for electronics. Currently I have the ultralight Nitecore Gen4 10,000 MaH battery. I’ve heard that this battery sometimes fails inexplicably. So I’m a little worried about hooking it up to the dirty voltage coming out of my dynamo. Has anyone else tried this combination? Did it work for you? Are there other batteries that are more robust and better able to stand up to a dynamo?

Bear can required on Adirondack rail trail?

I know bear cans are required in the high peaks, but how about on the rail trail? If so, any suggestions for a bear can for biking? I use a rear rack so I have plenty of space, but I’m not sure what approved cans fit well on a bike.

Dynamo hub on a Jones Truss fork?

I’ve decided to add a Dynamo hub to my Jones truss fork. I had my eye on the new SON 29 S which is a big leap forward in efficiency, but alas, SON doesn’t offer a 150mm version that will fit the Jones truss fork. Has anyone added a dynamo to a Jones?

Anyone using the new Exposure Revo 5 dynamo light?

I’ve been putting off investing in a dynamo and dynamo light. Lately, I’ve even been thinking that a battery-powered light and one or more good batteries may be superior to a dynamo for the kind of riding I do, mixed between road and trails, but no chunky, technical single track and never too far from civilization. After being underwhelmed with various battery lights by Knog, Trek, Light&Motion, I’d finally decided that I was going to bite the bullet and get a great Exposure light. Exposure has had a dynamo light for years, the Revo, but it seems like it just has never had much traction by demanding adventure cyclists.

But earlier this month, Exposure released the Revo 5 which has a built in battery, combining the best features of both lights. So I’m now considering investing in the new Son 29 hub and the Revo 5. Has anyone used this light? Can you compare it to some of the other leading contenders like, Busch Muller, kLite, Sinewave, and SON.

One of my frustrations with many of these other systems is how janky they seem to be. One of the things that really attracts me to Exposure is that they FINALLY adopted the USB-C standard. The Revo seems to make the connection to modern electronics much simpler.

The vinyl(?) Jones logo on my downtube is starting to crack and chip. I’ve been thinking of scraping it off and reapplying it as blue and purple anodizing. I’m curious if anyone has ever done this. Was it hard? Did you have to strip down all the components first? Did you do anything to protect the surface afterward?
