Starting Woes

I’m a first-year student at a strong lib-sci master’s program working a GAship that is funding most of, albeit not all of (ab 5.5k a semester left over), my tuition. It also provides me a good stipend.

This is, for context, my second master’s program. I have made a few posts in the past expressing my concerns regarding whether or not a masters in library science could help me achieve what I want — the ability to do research in what I’m interested in (which is a specific subset of new media research intersecting with a larger idea for a digital humanities project), the ability to teach and work with students — but after a few negative experiences (major health issues, then an abusive committee chair I had to remove) and speaking with multiple faculty members and the librarians at my former university, I was encouraged down the path of the MLIS.

Now, I’m sitting in my GAship, and in orientation, and with the program advisors, and I’m feeling like I made a massive mistake by not just going through with applying to PhDs in Info Sci (including the one @ my current university). As someone who already has an MA, it feels like I’ve taken one step forward and two steps back, and every time I meet a new doctoral student, I’m hit with grief again. Now, perhaps I’m just being particularly negative and I’ll feel differently when classes start…but maybe I won’t.

I’m mostly posting to get my thoughts out and see if any other current or previous MLIS students had similar feelings. Any and all replies are much appreciated.

Struggling with bugs

I moved into my first garden-level apartment about a week and a half ago. I am in the midwest. I’m not going to pretend that I don’t live with contamination OCD, but I moved for graduate school and had nowhere else to live because by the time I was admitted, all the good apartments were snatched up.

I have seen at least one bug, usually some kind of roach (albeit not always), every day since moving in. During move-in day, it was 10 dead ones. More recently, it’s been 2-3 roaches, including one that was alive and ON MY BED. I just vacuumed up a dead one in my living room.

I’ve sprayed the baseboards myself. The pest control guy came and did it too inside and outside. I keep my apartment painstakingly clean. I keep my sinks closed and my drains covered.

It doesn’t seem to matter. I’m supposed to start my assistantship with my graduate program tomorrow, and all I can think about is bugs. I’d love some advice on what to do, especially in keeping the fact that I have a cat in mind. I’ve been trying to caulk holes that I see in the baseboards, but I’m pretty broke until my contract starts so I haven’t been able to keep up and have had to go room by room.

I have a few pictures attached. The bugs in pictures one and two are most common and are the ones I tend to see on the daily. The bugs in 3 and 4 are less common.

I’m Free / I’m Screwed

I’m going to graduate school in another part of the country after being an ODTM at my current store for 2 years during my first grad degree program. I asked my HR to submit transfer requests to the two stores in the area I’ll be in, and said I’d be going to a new graduate program and that my graduate contract limits my hours that I can work during the semester.

I reached out to the new store with that information, and their store director replied to me and said that ‘that wasn’t what I submitted during my transfer request.’ I was, of course ( :| ), never asked what my availability would be by the HR representative.

The store director then sends me the availability form that was sent by my HR…and it’s completely inaccurate. The HR person got my days off correct, but the hours requested / times I’m available for aren’t even accurate to what I work now.

I would be less mad if I just had the transfer requests fall through. It’s way worse to have been dragged along and then having it get fucked over weeks after I was told it was approved.

I’ve worked for Target for 5 years. I hate a lot of it (and have posted as much), but the discount was really useful and the pay was pretty decent. Now I’m out, I guess. At least I won’t want to jump off a bridge working on a register anymore.

Xfinity saying I didn’t return equipment

Hello,

As per my title, I got a text from Xfinity today saying I haven’t returned my equipment yet. However, I DID return it a little over a week ago. Once I got the notif of the refund coming my way, I stupidly tossed the receipt from the return. What do I do? Would they print me a new one at the store if I went in person?

Is this mold? (Closet door)

I’m not sure how visible it is (my back camera is broken) but I’m staying in my friend’s guest room for a few weeks and the closet doors have brown spots all over them. I can’t help but think it looks like mold, and I’ve been feeling less well than usual for the past few days. Is this mold?

I’ve noted the room doesn’t have great circulation. My towels from showering regularly don’t dry.

Issued a ‘past due’ bill for what I should be refunded?

I returned my equipment as of yesterday evening because I’m moving out. I was told I’d be refunded for about $36. Today, I got an email that said that I owed Xfinity $36. I attempted to call the support line but there was a requirement to schedule a call back, which I did, but I’m frustrated about it. The people in store didn’t seem to know what I was talking about when I stopped by. What should I do?

Cashiering makes me want to jump off a bridge

My own health issues (POTs) being exacerbated by standing in one place aside, I have never done something as soul-killing as 5 eight hour cashiering shifts a week. By the end of my shift/towards my last 15, I find myself holding back resentful looks at my TL who’s fucking around on his phone at guest service, or the other cashiering TMs who often swerve me by having me (when I’m scheduled on GS desk) cover their breaks and then come back and go to the GS desk instead of taking back over.

I’m not sure if guests can perceive my ‘I’m either about to crash out, throw up, or pass out depending on how my body feels’ expression that I feel like is written all over my face, but by the time a shift ends I feel like I got ran over by a bus (again bc of POTs) or I feel like I need to get on an antidepressant (exaggerating, but still).

I’ve worked for Target for 5 years. I was hired for Starbucks but have been a cashier drone for the last 2. I need the money to survive and I will never make as much as I do here because of all my raises anywhere else, but I’d love to do almost anything else anyways. I’ve asked to be cross-trained and it never happens. I’m just wondering how many more cashiering or guest service-turned into -cashiering shifts it will take until I just quit on workday and never show up again.

Day 3 - Really Struggling

I was prescribed 150 SR of Wellbutrin once daily for adhd and my depression. I’ve always had great success on my adderall, but was struggling with habit-forming actually taking it, so I’d thought it might be nice to try out something I knew I HAD to build a routine around. I also, for context, have OCD and POTs.

My first day taking it was on Saturday. I took it in the morning with food, and felt very dizzy all day. I have heart issues as it is, and saw I had pretty bad tachycardia despite taking my beta blocker. I also got sick at work because it made me nauseous, and it nearly made me faint, so I had to go home early. I had really stark, surprisingly dark thoughts on the way home while I was driving, but wasn’t sure if it was the meds or because of how bad work went.

Well, I took it again yesterday with food and wasn’t nauseous, but had pretty significant brain fog and tachychardia again. I just kind of felt like I was floating and that time was passing really, really slowly. both nights, I haven’t been able to fall asleep until around 2am.

It’s day 3, and I’m a little scared to take it. I’ve been on a TON of meds — Effexor, Prozac, Zoloft, risperidone, mirtazapine, trazodone — but I’ve never had something quite so bad happen within the first two days, and on such a low dose. I’m posting to see if others have felt like this and for any kind of reassurance I can get. Thanks!

It feels like nobody even cares (vent)

I work retail at a certain red-colored grocery store, and have for 5 years. I was originally hired for Starbucks within it, which was moderately aggravating for my (hyper)POTS but could otherwise be managed enough to function by a combination of meds, compression socks, a stool behind the counter, a fan, and diligent hydration.

However, upon transferring to my new store 2 years ago, I’ve persistently been assigned to a task that asks me to be standing up and sitting down all the time, running around, lifting heavy things, and going outside in the heat during the summer. Needless to say, I’ve been faint, dizzy, nauseous, and getting cold sweats through my entire shifts. It’s too hot for me to wear my compression socks, and there’s no chairs back here and poor ventilation. I even had a near-faint in the bathroom on Sunday (as in, I was able to get to the floor rather than fully falling over), which hasn’t happened to me in a while (or, since last October) because I’ve had my symptoms pretty controlled.

I’m in the process of finally getting ADA accommodations, and I’ve told most of upper management as such and was told it was sent out so they know that, while the accommodations are in process; they should no longer schedule me in the position that asks me to work in the heat.

And well…let’s guess where I’ve worked this entire week. I’m in it right now, sitting dizzy on the floor, but unable to leave because if I do I miss out on my holiday pay from yesterday that I need for rent. I’m absolutely sick of people pretending to care and wanting me to be well. I’m also sick of people like my Mom, who told me I was being too high maintenance by trying to get accommodations. I’m ALSO sick of getting snark or getting fucked over by my coworkers, who are all younger than me and act like what I’m dealing with is somehow unimportant or not real.

I don’t want to quit this job. I’ve worked it for 5 years, and I know a) I’m good at it and b) I need it to make rent. In Starbucks, I was completely fine even if some days were hard, so I’m particularly resentful towards this location.

TLDR: working this job has me feeling like death every single day

ADA Accomodations

i’ve been working at Target for 5 years now and am currently in the process of getting a POTs diagnosis. my symptoms have progressively gotten worse over time, to the point that by today in drive-up i was pretty concerned about how faint i felt while working because of how hot it was. heat and standing in place have always been my biggest triggers, so obviously drive-up and cashiering are hard for me in ways that more mobile positions that are inside (effectively everything else — even service desk isn’t too bad for me) aren’t.

this led me to want to advocate for receiving accommodations at work. I wanted to make a post as I prep to call my cardiologist tomorrow to see if anyone else has POTs and has accommodations to see what I might expect. thanks so much!
