If you ever asked an average person anywhere else from TN about Salem, they would not know much expect the nursery rhyme மாம்பழமாம் மாம்பழம்.

It has been a mundance city for long with nothing ever happening. It has lacked the mindshare in the mainstream media and popular culture of TN, compared to its peers (Coimbatore, Trichy, Erode, ... Tanjavur even).

According to you, who made (successfully or unsuccessfully) Salem a household name in TN in recent times (let us say, from 2000s until now)?

எங்க பாத்தாலும் புது கோழி பண்ணையா போட்டுட்டு இருக்காங்க. இப்படியே போனா என்ன ஆகப்போகுதோ தெரியல.

Just plain confused about this.

On one hand, Tholkappiyar accepts them as part of Tamil while rejecting other parts of Sanskrit but on the other, he claims that they can be written as vowel-consonant pairs.

Also could not find any source saying they were in Proto-Dravidian as diphthongs.

Would love to hear your thoughts on this.
