Gotta love Japan. You can grab these crane game prizes for less than $10 at a re-seller shop, like Surugaya or Lashinbang.

[Hiring] Looking for Pixel Artists, Live 2D/Spine animators, and Character Designers / Illustrators

Hey everyone, I've recently started a new game studio in Japan, and I'm looking for some people to join me as my initial hires at the company. Since you'd be joining early, you will have large influence over the creative direction of the game's style in your respective area, be it pixel art, character design, or 2d animation. This also means that I'm primarily looking to hire people who are experienced. However, if you're exceptionally talented, I can overlook lack of experience, too.

The three key roles that I'm looking to staff right now:

  • Pixel Artist / Animator

  • Live 2D / Spine Animator

  • Character Designer / Illustrator

The launch title game has been in development by me for a bit less than a year thus far, and I have been working with some contractors during this time to put together some character designs and some rough sprites and animations.

You do not need high level Japanese for these roles.

These roles will be in-office to begin. As the company grows and evolves, I plan to evaluate if supporting remote work is possible. However, for the founding of the company and its initial work effort, I'll be asking everyone to come in to the office.

Important note: these jobs are only for people who are currently living in, and legally able to work in, Japan.

You can find the details of each role at https://www.kurikumagames.com/careers . If you're interested, please apply through the application form on the website, where you'll be asked to submit your resume and your portfolio.

Guaranteed exchange rate not honored over weekend?

I initiated a Wise transfer Saturday in America. According to their website, the guaranteed exchange rate time window shouldn’t be counted over the weekend. https://wise.com/help/articles/2448203/whats-a-guaranteed-rate

American banks do not transfer wires over the weekend. It just won’t happen. So obviously, the rate should be honored would be the logical assumption.

My wire went through first thing when the banks opened today (Monday), but I immediately get an email from Wise saying that I missed the rate window.

So I chat up support, and to my surprise, they agreed with me after I showed them the website. Then they escalated my case…and I get an email a couple minutes later from the escalation team saying nah, you missed the window. Just a totally canned response. Still waiting on another reply from them now after I sent my response.

Anyone else deal with this before? I’m new to using Wise, so this seems like a fairly straightforward situation to me. If I’m wrong and this is standard practice, there should really be like a giant flashing banner saying “You will not get this rate if you transfer now since it’s the weekend!”

The amount of extra costs and fees to rent an apartment (mansion) is insane to begin with...but now they want 97,900 yen to change the lock and keys?!

First of all, it is insanely stupid how much it costs just to rent a place here. Literally 5x the monthly rent just to move in. How did the people of this country come to accept this?

But now, AFTER the 5x monthly cost, they want an additional 97,900 yen to change the lock and keys.

A. How is this not just standard procedure?

B. This cost is ridiculous, right? Do I have any ability to demand a lower cost here? Or is this just another "take it up the ass and say thank you" type of situation?

I mean, it's a tower mansion, but that still feels like I am getting ripped off.

Unity UI is driving me insane. I can't get my prefabs to look correct in a grid layout group. Any advice?

I can't seem to figure this out at all. For some reason, Grid layout groups require specifying a cell size, but then I can't get it to scale down all of the child elements of the prefab appropriately.

I've tried different layers of stretch containers over elements, changing anchor positioning, but nothing I've attempted has worked. Some text boxes get shrunk down to nothing, some maintain their size and are way too big, none of them stay positioned properly.

Anyone else struggle with this before and figure it out?

Going to start interviewing people for roles at my new company and want to provide interpretation service. Any good recommendations?

I have (finally) gotten my business registered and ready to begin hiring here in Japan. However, I am still learning Japanese and can’t communicate to the level that I’d like to when conducting interviews. So, for candidates who want to speak Japanese, I want to provide interpretation service for them.

Has anyone here used a good interpreter or service before? My company is in the video game industry, so ideally the interpreter would be knowledge of that area.

Building a MMBN inspired game, and I'm curious to get your thoughts on deck construction limitations.

In the MMBN games, your folders have limits around which cards can be used. Each game was slightly different, but there were limits on how many copies of a single chip could be added and how many mega/giga class chips could be added.

I'm curious to know if you like those limits, or how you would improve them given the chance. One thing I've been toying around with is the concept of "total memory" or cost in a folder/deck. Instead of limiting the amount of cards that can be used based on rarity, cards would have a cost to equip and a deck would have a total capacity that all 30 cards would need to fit into. There would then be ways within the game to either increase this deck cost cap, or reduce the cost of certain battle cards (combining duplicates, for example, could reduce the cost to equip them).

I'm trying to find that nice, fine line between allowing the players to have fun with their rare and powerful cards, but not making the game too piss easy by allowing them to spam giga class attacks all willy nilly.
