My roommate went out of town and locked her cat in her room. I broke her door lock to save it, but now I’ve found something terrifying.

I (22F) live with my roommate 'Maya' (23F) in a two-bedroom apartment. We’ve been roommates for about a year and mostly stay out of each other's way. Maya is incredibly Type-A, very clean, and borderline obsessive about her privacy—she even installed a heavy-duty keypad lock on her bedroom door, which I never questioned because, hey, her space, her rules.

Three days ago, Maya left for a week-long business trip. Before she left, she told me she was leaving her cat, Milo, in her room, but that her sister was coming over daily to feed him and clean his litter.

By day two, I hadn't seen the sister once. Last night, I started hearing Milo crying through the door. It wasn't normal meowing—it was that awful, distressed yowling. I texted Maya asking if her sister was coming. No response. I called the sister (I had her number from a emergency list on the fridge). The sister sounded totally confused and said Maya never asked her to pet-sit because they are currently fighting.

Panicking that the cat was starving or hurt, I got a hammer and literally pried the keypad lock off the door frame to get in.

Milo was fine, just out of food and water. But while I was setting down a fresh water bowl, I noticed a tiny blue blinking light hidden inside the eyes of a stuffed animal on Maya's shelf.

It’s a hidden nanny cam. And it wasn't pointing at her room or her bed. The lens was angled directly through her open doorway, pointed straight across the hall, aiming perfectly into my bedroom. Because I leave my door open for airflow, this camera has a clear, unobstructed view of the inside of my room, my bed, and everything I do.

I am sick to my stomach. I checked the camera, and it’s a live-streaming model that links to an app on a phone. That means Maya likely got an immediate notification that I broke into her room, and she might even have a recording of me doing it.

She still hasn't replied to my texts. I am currently sitting in my room with my door locked, staring at her broken door frame. If I call the landlord, I might get evicted for property damage. If I call the police, I don’t know if a hidden camera pointing out of her own room counts as illegal surveillance. Maya comes back in four days. What on earth do I do?
