Subreddit Check-in + Rule Reminder

Subreddit Check-in + Rule Reminder

Hi all! Your resident head mod here. It's been a while since I talked subreddit stuff so I thought I'd check in. I also noticed there's been some dissatisfaction lately with the other sub and I wanted to talk about that.

First, how's everyone feeling about this sub? Any concerns or observations? The mod team here is active and open to feedback, so if you have any concerns or suggestions, we're always open to hearing them.

Second, I noticed in the past few days, there's been some discussion on r/TheSummerHikaruDied about the quality of posts there. A few people have recommended others to come discuss the series on this sub instead of that one. To those people, welcome! Please make sure you read the rules and tag your posts appropriately, especially spoilers. If you come across any posts or comments that break the rules, please report them - as I mentioned, the mods here are active and we usually take care of it pretty quickly.

I know some of you are also wondering, why do we even have two subs? The short version is that we've tried to merge them before, but the moderator on the other sub is not interested unless he gets to be the top mod, and I wasn't willing to do that when the mods here are the ones who do all the work. (You may have noticed that the r/TSHD mod has a very....... "hands-off" approach to moderation, lol.) So we ended up just settling on having two subs. You're welcome to post here, or post over there, or on both! We have nothing against the other sub, but please remember that we have no control over what gets posted there.

Finally, I'd like to remind everyone about the rules of this sub, especially as the manga reaches its ending. Anything from beyond the first season of the anime (equivalent to the fifth volume of the manga, which ends with chapter 26) must be marked as a spoiler. Anything means anything - manga, merchandise, fanart, anything. Sometimes if I catch a post that's not appropriately tagged as a spoiler, I can add it myself, but if the title contains a spoiler, the post will have to be removed instead.

Additionally - please remember that sexually suggestive material is not banned on this sub. The series has intentional LGBT themes and imagery that is meant to be sexually suggestive. Banning suggestive fanart would not make any sense when we're dealing with a show where the MCs have metaphorical gay sex on screen in the third episode, lmao. So, if you report a post simply for being suggestive, your report is going to get ignored. However, explicit NSFW content is not allowed. Please report anything that crosses the line into explicit content so it can get removed.

Okay that's it for now! Thanks for being such a great community <3

A Sonic boomer's thoughts on the IDW comics

Hi all! I'm an older sonic fan (39 yo) who grew up playing the games and reading the Archie comics. Yes that makes me a millennial not a boomer, but you know what I mean when I call myself a Sonic boomer, haha.

I've been binging the IDW comics for the last few months and I wanted to talk about my experience. I've read up to about #60. But here's some disorganized thoughts in bullet format:

- I remember reading the first ~3-4 issues back when they came out but when the news broke about how Sega wasn't going to let the writers let the canon characters change or evolve, I immediately stopped reading. I understand they don't want another Penders situation but it still sucked

- Started reading the comics again now because I recently saw the first two Sonic live action movies for the first time and LOVED them. Knuckles is my favorite character and he was especially good in the second one. It had me feeling nostalgic so I decided to give the IDW series another try

- Did not like the first arc much but the stuff with the Metal Virus was AWESOME. They should make a whole movie/game based off that

- I love Dr. Starline. He's SO great and I was sad when he died :( but I do think his arc had kinda come to an end and lead perfectly into Surge and Kit

- Surge and Kit are EASILY the standout best part of this series. They're fascinating, feel so unique and fresh, and their dynamic together is amazing.

- I don't like Tangle that much. She's a little bit one dimensional. But she does look cool.

- Whisper is also really great and she makes Tangle more interesting because she needs a more talkative character to interact with.

- Mimic is another great character that I hope we see again... You NEVER know when someone could be him in disguise and that's great

- From lurking a bit I've got the sense that people don't like Lanolin? Or maybe she gets worse later? But right now I like her a lot - maybe it's because I'm an older reader but I can relate to how she's so fed up with the shit around her lol

- The last 3D sonic game I played was Heroes, and the only other games I've played since then are Mania and Superstars. So all the canon characters who were invented since Heroes feel like brand new characters I'm learning about for the first time.

- SILVER IS SO CUTE! He's great. I like how distinct he is from Sonic and Shadow

- Blaze is weird, I want to know more about her strange alternate universe, but I'm guessing that's all information in a game and won't get rehashed in the comics?

- Speaking of Shadow, it's a little disappointing that we don't see him very often, but it does make sense. He wouldn't be hanging out constantly with Team Sonic and the restoration

- My favorite shorter stories so far have been the Chao Race with Rouge and Amy, and Scrapnik Island

- I had no clue what the Zeti were before this and tbh I didn't like them much - they look sort of weird and not much like Sonic characters. But the comic has made them grow on me

- tbh I don't really miss any of the Archie characters EXCEPT FOR BUNNY. If I could have one wish granted it would be to bring her back somehow/reintroduce her!

- Well, I guess I also miss Mighty as well, he is my second favorite character from the games, and he was in the Archie comics. But I guess he's trapped in the classic sonic AU?

- I want more Knuckles please!!

Anyway, that's about it, ask me anything? Also is there a discord anyone can recommend to me for the IDW comics and/or older Sonic fans? Thank youuu

[NA] [7 of 8] [Static] [Savage] [semi-MC] Returning raid group looking for new member

Hello! We're a 7/8 North American static looking for a shield healer to join us for the current savage tier (M9S-M12S). We are a raid group comprised of experienced players who like to take the game more seriously than casual, but who raid fewer hours per week than hardcore.

We did the first floor of Arcadion together and most of the second, but towards the end of M8S some of our members were feeling burnt out on raiding, so the static went on a hiatus. Now that some time has passed and Evercold got announced, our members are interested in getting back together and taking a whack at M9S-M12S prior to Evercold coming out. However, our shield healer is not able to continue raiding with us at the moment, so we're looking for a new one to fill that spot!

Raiding schedule:
Tuesdays, 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM CDT (UTC -5)
Thursdays, 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM CDT (UTC -5)

These are reduced hours from what we'd normally do, but we're aiming to prog this tier pretty fast and we don't want to get burnt out again right before Evercold.

As I said above, we're a group of experienced players who have all cleared at least two savage tiers in the past. To give you an idea, we cleared M9S last week in just over a single lockout (23 pulls), and that's with bad gear and most of us being out of practice. Happy to share logs upon request!

More info about us:

 • We meet on Sargantas to raid, but being on Aether DC is not required
 • We can help if you need crafted gear or materia to get started
 • Almost all of us are LGBTQ so being gay friendly is a must
 • We apologize ahead of time for our unhinged sense of humor

If you're interested, please send me a PM or hit me up on Discord at oddlazdo. Thanks for reading!

Have any of y'all actually been selected for a jury?

Arriving at the downtown courthouse at 7:45 for jury duty. Hoping they'll let me go without having to sit through jury selection only to get dismissed for being a lawyer. Who'd want a lawyer on their jury??

And it made me wonder, have any of you ever been selected for a jury during jury service? Does your state have any kind of exemption for lawyers?

Ever since I read that Kim has two unique skills of his own (in the comments of this post specifically), I've had an idea in the back of my head to figure out what Kim's character sheet might look like in DIsco Elysium. Not if he was a playable character, but rather, what would Kim have done with his own skill points over his life/career? And I figured he'd probably have a handful of other custom skills as well, so I thought up a few for fun.

Quick explanation!

3/5/3/1 - I landed on this by first accepting the fact that Kim has only 1 natural point in Motorics. With that established, it leaves you with a lot of room to put lots of base points into the other three attributes. I decided Psyche would probably be his highest attribute, between the burden of 10+ years in the RCM and just the kind of person that he is in Disco Elysium - he has a lot of mental fortitude in general, in numerous ways.

Unique Intellect Skills: I replaced Encyclopedia with Recall and Conceptualization with Conjecture.

Encyclopedia is replaced because Kim's brain doesn't latch onto random information the same way Harry's does - I think information gets churned through his head in more of a short-term/long-term memory way, where he silently lets things marinate in his head before jumping to conclusions. The most straightforward manifestation of this is how he uses his notebook to jot down details, even if they may not immediately seem important, and then at the end of the day goes over them again. His ability to store and recall information is, I think, more of a dominant part of how he thinks compared to Harry - and maybe perhaps Harry used to have Recall but it was replaced by Encyclopedia when he lost his memory.

Conceptualization is replaced because Kim isn't much of a creative or imaginative sort. When he postulates a theory, he isn't conceptualizing something so much as he's engaging in Conjecture. He thinks within the bounds of rational possibility, whereas I think Harry's Conceptualization fits him more as a daydreamer.

One extra point each in Logic, Recall, Rhetoric and Conjecture, and no extra in Drama or Visual Calculus - he doesn't sniff out lies and inconsistencies with Drama but by making note of details and contradictions. And of course, his low Visual Calculus goes hand in hand with his low Perception.

Unique Psyche Skills: Inland Empire is switched with Compassion and Suggestion becomes Outsider.

Similar to how Kim isn't dreamy/creative in the same way Harry is, Inland Empire doesn't quite make sense for him, at least not Harry's version of it. I thought a good replacement would be something that captures Kim's genuine desire to help others. It's important to point out the difference between Compassion and Empathy, which is sitting right next to it in the character sheet. Compassion is a person's consciousness of others' distress, combined with a desire to help. Empathy on the other hand is being able to put yourself in another person's shoes and understand how they feel and why. I think Kim is someone who'd be well aware of the difference between these two emotional skills and consciously tap into the right one when needed, especially as a seasoned officer who probably saw some upsetting things while working with juveniles. Every time Kim pats Harry on the back to comfort him about some insane thing he's become upset about, he's using Compassion, not Empathy. Kim doesn't always understand why Harry gets upset about weird crap but he can recognize he's upset and want to provide some reassurance.

Outsider is directly stolen from this swap AU fanfic because I just think it worked so well for Kim. Outsider is, basically, a skill that helps Kim grapple with feeling different from others around him. Whether it's because of his race, his sexuality, growing up without a family, being a cop, or even his poor eyesight, Outsider would help him stay grounded in the face of others' judgment and his own self-judgment. The conversation with the racist lorry driver would be an Outsider check, for example. Or, Kim's ability to recognize what was going on between the Sunday friend and smoker.

Kim would, I think, dump a lot of points into Psyche skills. He'd absolutely hate having an unlucky low roll in a stat that he expects to roll high, so he'd be the kind of person to save skill points for when he needs to retry a roll. High Volition is definitely a must I think for Kim, it simply makes too much sense between his controlled smoking, neutral affect and tendency towards being a party pooper.

Unique Physique Skills: Electrochemistry becomes Joie de Vivre and Shivers becomes Volta do Mar.

Joie de Vivre is something that was also inspired by that fanfic I linked earlier, but instead of basically stealing it 1:1 like I did with Outsider, I think my version of it would be a little different. In that fic, Joie de Vivre is basically just a renamed Electrochemistry that expresses itself in a less crude manner. I think my concept of it would be a little different, since Kim isn't a hopeless addict like Harry is. Instead, Joie de Vivre is Kim's more silly, playful side, the part of him that relishes in beating Harry at Suzerainty, or gives in to dancing in the church. Yes, it's probably also the skill that kicks in when Kim is on a date or something, but I don't think it would be quite so obsessed with pleasurable physical sensations like Electrochemistry is.

Volta do Mar is obligatory since it's one of the two unique skills we know he'd have, and that it's a Physique skill. I decided to replace Shivers with it since Shivers is so connected with Harry's psychic world spirit thing, which Kim doesn't have. But aside from that, and from knowing it's named after the poems people tell themselves while traveling through the pale, I'm not sure exactly what Volta do Mar would do. (Honestly if I didn't know it was a Physique skill, I would've put it under Psyche.) Any ideas?

Despite not knowing what to do with Volta do Mar I guessed he'd have some extra points in it, lol. Maybe it helps Kim resist Harry's likely pale-induced insanity? One extra point in Endurance (he does manage to keep up with all of Harry's running somehow) and Half-Light (copperino needs to keep himself alive when something unexpected happens on the job).

Unique Motorics Skills: Savoir Faire becomes Kinetic Dressage.

This is similar to Volta do Mar in that we know this is a unique Motorics skill that Kim has. That being said, I'm not sure exactly how it would be different from the other Motorics skills. I was on the fence with whether it should replace Savoir Faire or Interfacing, but ultimately decided that Interfacing is too fitting for Kim as someone who likes tinkering with machines, so Savoir Faire got replaced instead. There's been some interesting discussion online about what Kinetic Dressage even means - "dressage" doesn't mean anything in English aside from the equestrian sport, so I think it's probably meant to be a reference to that, but whatever the "kinetic" adds is kinda unclear. Since Savoir Faire has to do with being sneaky and underhanded, and Kim seems to generally disfavor those tactics, perhaps Kinetic Dressage would lean more towards the acrobatic/speed elements of Savoir Faire.

I left the other Motorics skills as they were because I think Kim's low Motorics skill is a fairly important part of envisioning what his character sheet might look like. Composure is both his signature skill and the only skill with extra points in it, despite the attribute being low overall. Kim is nothing if not composed. Maintaining his composure is clearly very important to him, on several different levels. I think this is the only skill where he'd put those points in preemptively to try to compensate for low rolls ahead of time. He most likely gets bonuses to Composure through Thoughts and clothing as well, but editing a screenshot to incorporate those bonuses was a little too time consuming for something like this. Pretend it says +2 or +3 from thoughts instead of -1.

Credit for the artwork I used for the unique skills:

Recall - Beatrice Werlie

Conjecture - William den Broeder

Compassion - Marijana Rakicevic

Outsider - u/a-lost-sketchbook

Joie de Vivre - Svetlana Gudilova

Volta do Mar - Simon Bernard of Saint Andre

Kinetic Dressage - Victor Vasarely

I'd love to edit some screenshots to show his inventory screen and thought cabinet as well, but I think it would be too time consuming. And probably a lot easier by just modding the game, although I have no idea how to do that, lol.

Anyway thank you for reading this weirdly long post for my frivolous headcanon 🎉
