first morning in the valley, magical moment

we just found parking at the lodge and were walking to The Village, probably around 7:30.

as we followed the path along the road, we saw a small cluster of people gathered and looking towards the tall tree in the photo.

I then quickly saw their point of interest: a large momma brown bear walking through the tall grass.

i’ve never seen a bear in person. it brought out an involuntary gasp, and froze me to the ground. it was such a strikingly beautiful moment.

then, the bear began looking up at the tall tree, and we heard some strange sounds, almost like a cry for help.

Some stick and leaves rained down. The mom sat back on its hind legs and looked up.

High in the tree, almost near its peak, were two cubs, one of which was hanging from a swaying, thin branch that bounced as he moved.

the scene became a bit tense then, as we feared the branch would snap and we’d see this baby bear fall 15+ feet.

before i could look back down, the momma bear scaled its way up the tree, and walked out on that same flimsy branch. i marveled at an animal with so much mass being able to climb with so much ease.

—-

we stayed for another five minutes to see if the mom would help lower the cubs, but did not want to see a possible accident, so we left. i’m assuming it all went well.

it was an unforgettable first impression of the park.

i present two different pies

the first is inspired by a recipe i found on this sub.

toppings are artichokes, sun dried tomatoes, capers, and mortadella.

second, more controversial, is sauce with onion, olive, and tuna! mayo for that one as well

LA to Rhode Island road trip

I did the drive in the other direction, choosing the southern route. This time, I am interested in the northern route. Looking at the map, After going LA -> LV -> Denver -> Omaha -> Chicago, the recommended route dips down and across until we reach RI.

But, I see that tantalizing Canadian border just asking for me to cross from Detroit, and then re enter in Buffalo at Niagara and work my way back down.

Has anyone done a route like this, and if so, any advice? I am not exactly sure how much time this would add onto an already 40+ hour drive

sorry to anyone going south on wilshire at the hollywood intersection

my rav4 broke down in the left lane right at that intersection and caused so much backup.

called the police, waited 2+ hours and they never came. tow eventually came after 2.5 hours.

Is my math right on the first year value?

This will of course be subjective but I am a fairly frugal spender who goes on a few trips a year, so I will only include the benefits that I will take advantage of in my math.

1500 in travel points that auto count as 2x when using for travel in portal, so at minimum that $1,500 becomes $3,000 with potential to be higher if transferred out

2x $150 dining credits at select restaurants

2x $150 stub hub credits, already used one to see LA Philharmonic

a $300 credit on any travel

2x $250 edit credits, I will probably only use 1

1 $250 hotel credit for a different group of hotels, but there are 100+ that overlap with that first one so you can get $500 towards one 2 night stay

free year of Apple Music, I canceled Spotify to save $130

$10 Lyft credit every month, I’ll probably use that 4 times a year

Global entry fee, now I have TSA for domestic and global entry for coming back into US, $120

Lounges but I won't assign monetary value to that.

So, in the first year, for a $795 annual fee, I am getting close to $4,000 in value through organic spend.

Why isn't everyone signing up for this new 150,000 SUB?

it was probably 4+ feet long, and if my memory serves it was black/dark brown with some brighter oranges or reds along its spine. didn't see its head. probably a few inches thick at a minimum.

Scared the bejesus out of me
