Amex Gold UK as first credit card?

Hi there!

I’m 22 starting a job as a trainee solicitor after finishing my masters. I have a Revolut Ultra as a current account and now seeking a credit card (now that I have an income) to build my score and earn rewards (particularly Avios as I have a few saved from converting my Rev Points).

My salary is £36k rising to £68k in 2028. So I’m looking for a credit card for 2026-2028. I will re-evaluate the credit card type in 2028 given the higher income then.

I’ve come across the Amex Gold in my search. I have a few purchases coming up which makes the sign up bonus achievable. I believe it’s free for the first year and I can transfer my MR to Avios (I will wait for when there are bonus conversions to do this).

Is an Amex Gold a feasible “first credit card” in my circumstance? Thanks :)

Your non-negotiable contract benefit

I’m curious, what’s one benefit you feel is a MUST for you to move firms, or something you wish you had in your current contract?

Private med? WFH? Subsidised gym memberships?

Incoming Trainee Solicitor advice

Hi there! I'm approaching my TC in September at a national firm (think Pinsents, Sheds level) and was posting to see if anyone has any advice for approaching the next two years. For example:

What would you have done differently in your own TC/QWE?

What are some common mistakes that trainees make that are best to avoid?

Thank you so much!

Alternative careers?

For those of you who did not qualify or left practice, what alternative careers are you pursuing now? Compliance and Insurance tend to be common areas but always interested to hear from people. Thanks :)

Similar Padel rackets?

Hi there guys! I’m fairly new to padel (couple months in) but previously played squash. Had my own racket, but borrowed this Head Lynx 2025 for a match and it was brilliant. Felt it suited my playing style.

Are there any rackets that are of similar style to this suitable for beginners? Has anyone else used this racket before? Budget around the £100 mark.

Cheers!

Hierarchy of regional firms

After the news of DLA Piper increasing their NQ pay in the regions, there is no doubt that they are the "top dog" firm for pay. It made me think, how do people "rank" or "tier" firms overall in the regions as a hierarchy?

Moving to London - Advice

Hi all,

I’m at a national law firm (think sheds, PM level etc). I’ve been offered the opportunity to go to London for a seat. Professionally, I know the opportunity will be great.

I will be paid my regional base salary (high 30 range) but will have full serviced accommodation and travel home sorted by the firm.

Is this salary doable to live in London? It’s hard to gauge personally coming from a region where the cost of living is relatively lower, but I will have a big expense paid out.

Thanks :)

Thoughts on holding?

Long term 22 year old investor hold and forget. Did originally have thematic ETFs (space/semis) but thought there was maybe too much overlap.

SQE2 Advocacy structure

Just thought I’d share my “WATFORD” process towards Advocacy which you may find helpful for structure:

  1. Who?

Who are you appearing on behalf of? Are they the defendant/complainant or applicant/respondent.

  1. Application?

Why are you appearing before the court? Is it to set aside a default judgment etc

  1. Test?

Remind the court of the requirements e.g real prospect of success or some other good reason for trial

  1. Framework?

How many submissions are you going to make? What will be your argument?

  1. Organisation?

Confirm the judge has the materials you will be referring to

  1. Recitals

Does the court require a summary of the facts?

  1. Detail

The show begins! It’s submission time.

Hope it helps :)

Sale of Materials (£15)

Hi guys, this will be my first and only post on the matter.

I have recently sat SQE2 (results pending September 2026) and understand how time consuming note consolidation can be.

I've thought about it and have decided to sell all my SQE2 notes for £15.

It's a bit different to what other people may provide. Each topic is condensed into one page, making the content more accessible for long-term memory which is vital for SQE2.

Ive attached a sample of Dispute Resolution for free for everyone's use on here 😄

The topics are:

  1. Disputes Advocacy (Tests)

  2. Criminal Advocacy (Tests)

  3. Tort

  4. Contract

  5. Crime

  6. Property Practice (Land law is included here)

Important Information:

  1. Notes will be sent via email, in PDF format and copyrighted;

  2. Each PDF will have a unique code to identify any individuals disseminating the materials without permission;

  3. Since topics are condensed to one page, it may rely on you knowing some information permanently (hence its exclusion) e.g. the meaning of causation or the test for novel duty of care. This was information I personally did not need to revise.

Best of luck for future sitters 😄

Thoughts on long term pie?

22Y old planning to hold and forget. Wanted All-World to make a large amount of the portfolio whilst leaving some room to engage in more riskier endeavours (Nasdaq and Semis etc).

Also curious - what alternative options would you have instead of the small cap, for example!

How can I approach my sexual relationship with my partner? 22M and 22F

TLDR: Me (22M and my partner (22F) rarely have sex. Love her, but I feel sexually neglected. I don’t want to be a “sex pest” for feeling this way. Turned to porn once a week to satisfy myself, as I can’t bring myself to ask her for pics of herself out of a respect standpoint.

My gf and I have been together for 4 years. I’ll preface by saying that we have a great relationship and I love her and her family to pieces. I would do anything for her.

However, I can’t help but feel sometimes not satisfied. We both live with our parents. We see each other x3 a week (me often coming to hers because she has a big house).

We rarely have sex. The last time being end of March/early April when we were on holiday. She doesn’t like to have sex when parents are in the house (which I totally understand and agree). We also don’t really kiss when parents are around (like in the room).

So I feel sometimes it’s like I’m meeting a best friend given the lack of sex. We go without sex for potentially months. Sex to me is an important aspect of a relationship. I would be happy to have sex once a week or more. I know my gf has a Lower libido than I do.

I remember early in the relationship she would give me a BJ and I would love it. However, I haven’t had this in years. I never request as I would never want to pressure my partner into something she may feel uncomfortable to do. However, it just makes me reminisce to the early stage of our relationship at college/uni when sex was frequent and more explorative.

This means I have turned to porn once a week to satisfy myself. I hate myself for it and almost feel like “cheating” for doing so. Let me clarify, I would never cheat on my partner.

But I don’t know how to ask my partner to send pictures of herself without her maybe feeling uncomfortable or approach my feelings regarding our sex life.

Any advice is appreciated. Please feel free to share if my opinions/thoughts are not rational etc.

Ladies, gentlemen and all those inbetween, we bloody did it! Time to go and have a pint and worry about something else rather than these bloody exams.

Allocation thoughts?

22 years old long term investor. I treat the Semiconductor ETF as my “stock picks” and the NASDAQ as my weight towards the US. The rest is just aimed for diversification.

u/legaleagleuk — 3 months ago

Allocation thoughts?

Intending for a long term hold with these ETFs. Is this diversified enough? Was hoping the MSCI excluding USA would not overweight the US beyond 50%. 22Y old

u/legaleagleuk — 3 months ago

For context, I am 22 years old who has two investment portfolios.

This is the LISA for my house savings to be withdrawn around 26-27 years old. Thought I’d go for an active allocation which tends to outperform the market in the timeframe I need (5-6 years rather than 25+ where they very much underperform). That was my rationale anyway.

I have an 80% All world 10% S&P and 10% blue chip stock split for my other savings including retirement for the above reasons.

Cheers!

Looks like the SQE will have a different spec and FLK starting September. Thoughts? Long overdue?

Assuming this means a cut down of some topics for those yet to sit so I guess it will be positive.

If only I started a year later aha. SQE2 orals we roll!

75% of the way through. Only 25% to go before we don’t have to touch another external exam in our lives.

Personally where I felt I lacked in law, I just stat padded the document with skills. Background facts, conclusions, next steps etc.

Onto the orals. I imagine this will be test heavy? Is anyone else considering going a bit lighter on their underlying law here.

^PS why is results day ONE WEEK before I start my TC. Awful

The exams are now on the doorstep. Any advice for sitting the exam. What should I be preparing now beforehand? How should I handle myself in the exam?

Cheers!
