went in blind to The Receptionist last night and my brain is still buffering (also this Playbill has some nerve)

Knew basically nothing going in. No reviews, no synopsis, just showed up at the Pershing Square Signature Center and sat down. Genuinely think that's the only way to experience this one.

For the first stretch of the show I was just watching what felt like a really sharp office comedy. Katie Finneran is answering phones nonstop, cleaning up after her coworkers, gossiping, being the kind of aggressively competent person we've all worked with. Funny as hell. I was completely relaxed. And that's exactly the trap.

Because something starts to shift and you can't quite point to when it happened. By the time the stakes actually land you're already in it. I walked out of that theater doing the same blank stare I did after catching the first preview of Bug back in December. Both times I went in cold and both times I came out needing a minute to figure out what I actually just witnessed.

Bug is a whole different level obviously. It's a full two act wrecking ball and by the end you feel genuinely destroyed. The Receptionist is quieter, shorter, more of a slow needle under the skin. But they're pulling from the same place, that idea that ordinary people in ordinary situations are capable of just... not asking questions they really should be asking. Both shows make you weirdly implicated as an audience member and I didn't expect that from either of them.

The one thing I'll say is the script doesn't totally stick the landing. You keep waiting for the play to fully expose what's going on and it never quite does. Some people will love that ambiguity and some people will feel like they got shortchanged. I'm somewhere in the middle. But Finneran is so locked in that she carries you through even the moments where the writing leaves you hanging.

Oh and one more thing. Picked up the Playbill and flipped to the "How Many Have You Seen?" section. The Receptionist is sitting right there in the Broadway column next to Six, Wicked, Stranger Things, Two Strangers, etc. Off Broadway shows are clearly separated on the right side of the page. I noticed this same thing when I saw Rocky Horror a few weeks ago. But The Receptionist is very much an Off Broadway show at an Off Broadway house and apparently nobody told the Playbill ad team. Either that or Second Stage is putting it into the universe and I respect the confidence.

Go see it. Go in blind. Let Finneran's performance work on you. Just accept that you won't get everything tied up neatly at the end and you'll have a great time.

Every Brilliant Thing rush has become an arms race. I have the data to prove it.

I analyzed every BroadwayRushReport Broadway Rush Community Reporting Thread rush data since the opening of Every Brilliant Thing. Here's how it went from "8am is fine" to "camp overnight and still get denied."

TL;DR: The Every Brilliant Thing rush line has escalated from "arrive at 5am" in early March to "arrive at 10pm the night before" by mid-May. I got there at 3am this morning (5/14) and didn't get a ticket because the person ahead of me changed his mind and bought 2 instead of 1.

What happened this morning

I read today's rush report and it broke me. Someone arrived at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre at 3:00 AM and didn't get a ticket. The first person had arrived at 10:00 PM the previous night!!, twelve hours before box office opens. By 3:15 AM there were 8-9 people in line for 8 tickets.

The person at 3 AM was in position to get the last one. The guy ahead told her he was only buying one ticket. Then at the window, he bought two. That was it. The next cheapest option? $399.

I've been following these rush threads since March. Here's what the data shows.

The Data

I collected 53 EBT-related data points from the r/Broadway rush community reporting threads spanning March 31 – May 14, 2026 (about 2.5 months). Here's what I found:

Chart 1: "The Escalation": When the first person arrives

The trend is unmistakable:

  • Late March/Early April: First person arrives around 5:00 AM (5 hours early)
  • Mid-April: First overnight camper appears — midnight on 4/16
  • Late April: Regularly 2-3 AM arrivals
  • Early May: 11:30 PM the night before (5/6), 11:45 PM (5/8)
  • May 14: 10:00 PM the night before — a full 12 hours before box office opens

In 6 weeks, the arrival time shifted backward by 7+ hours.

Chart 2: "50 People, 8 Tickets": The demand explosion

Key stats:

  • Rush tickets available: 6-8 per performance (usually 8)
  • Line at box office open: ranges from 9 to 65 people
  • Worst recorded ratio: 65:8 (April 25, a Saturday)
  • Average ratio on weekends: approximately 6:1

That means on a typical weekend, roughly 85% of the people in line leave empty-handed after waiting hours in the dark.

Chart 3: "How Early Do You Actually Need to Be?"

This is the most useful chart, the arrival time of the last person who actually got a ticket:

Period Cutoff Arrival
Late March ~7:00 AM
Mid-April ~5:00 AM
Late April ~5:00 AM
Early May ~5:15 AM (2-show days)
May 14 2:15 AM

The safe arrival time has shifted from "before 7am" to "before 2am" in 6 weeks.

Chart 4: How EBT compares to other shows

EBT is in a league of its own. Even Oh, Mary! (the previous "hardest rush") has first arrivals around 5 AM. EBT's 10 PM arrival is 7 hours earlier than any other show's first person.

Key Stats Summary

Metric March May
First person arrives 5:00 AM 10:00 PM (prev night)
Cutoff arrival ~7:00 AM ~2:15 AM
People in line at open 12-20 40-65
Tickets available 6-8 6-8
Success rate ~50% ~15%
Hours waiting (first person) 5 hrs 12 hrs

Discussion: Is this sustainable?

A few observations:

  1. The tickets haven't increased. Still 6-8 rush tickets despite demand growing 3-5x. The show hasn't responded at all.
  2. It's becoming a safety issue. Multiple people in threads have pointed out that camping alone at midnight on a NYC sidewalk isn't safe. One commenter wrote: "If people are showing up at 11:30 the night before, I'm of the mindset the line should be shut down. It's not safe to be out there that long that late at night."
  3. The economics are broken You're spending 8-12 hours in line for a $45 ticket. That's valuing your time at $3.75-$5.63/hour. EDIT: As commenters (u/goodgodlemon1) correctly pointed out, the right framing is that you're saving $354+ over 12 hours (~$29/hr), which is actually rational. The broken part isn't the individual decision, it's the system where your only options are "$45 + camp overnight" or "$400-$894." There's no middle ground. The rush system was designed for people arriving an hour or two early, not overnight camping.
  4. The arms race will continue. Every time someone reports arriving at midnight and getting a ticket, the next person shows up at 10 PM. There's no floor until someone literally camps 24 hours.

Methodology

Data source: r/Broadway daily "Broadway Rush Community Reporting Thread" posts, March 31 – May 14, 2026. I extracted arrival times, line counts, and ticket availability from 53 comments specifically mentioning Every Brilliant Thing. Times were reported by community members who were in line or walking past.

Limitations: Not every day has a report and I only looked at BroadwayRushReport posts, knowing there are other users who post rush reports (sorry it was a lot of manual work as reddit won't let you crawl). Weekend data is more common. Line counts are approximate. Some comments were posted hours after the fact.

I love this show. I love Daniel Radcliffe. But camping on a sidewalk from 10 PM to 10 AM for a 15% chance at a $45 ticket is not a rush policy, it's an endurance contest.

Could the massive Broadway success of Schmigadoon! actually save the canceled Apple TV+ show?

just saw an article (I'm gonna attach the link) that brings up a really exciting possibility I wanted to get your thoughts on.

The article points out that the Schmigadoon! stage show is doing incredibly well and just racked up a ton of Tony nominations as the most-nominated new musical. Because of this massive critical acclaim, it's sparking fresh hope that Apple TV+ might actually reverse their cancellation and bring the series back for Season 3.

It makes a lot of sense if you think about it. If it continues being successful on Broadway and even comes away with the Best Musical award at the Tony ceremony, Apple would have more reason than ever to capitalize on that hype and bring the series back. Especially since the creator previously mentioned that Season 3 was already completely written before the show was canceled.

Has a successful Broadway adaptation ever resurrected a canceled TV show or movie sequel before? Do you think Apple will actually greenlight Season 3?

Rush Report: New Born at Minetta Lane (Friday 5/8) + 'The Pitt' cast taking over NYC!

Decided to head down to the Audible Theater (Minetta Lane) to try for day-of tickets for the opening of Ella Hickson's New Born, their policy is $35 Day-Of Tickets available at the box office, which opens at 12:00 PM.

Here is the line count so far this morning:
- 9:18 AM: 1 person
- 10:46 AM: 2 people
- 11:25 AM: 6 people
- 11:35 AM: 7 people

Seems like a surprisingly relaxed line for opening day! Honestly, I’m mostly just thrilled to see Marianna Gailus and Sepideh Moafi tackle this material. (Yes, Hugh Jackman is in it too, but I know how this sub feels about him 😂).

Side note: Is anyone else loving how the cast of HBO's The Pitt is completely taking over the NY theater scene right now? We've got Patrick Ball doing Becky Shaw, Isa Briones in Just In Time, and now Sepideh Moafi starring in this. It is so great to see TV actors with serious stage chops actually flocking to Broadway and Off-Broadway!

This is such a long shot, but I have to try because I'm kicking myself for not exchanging info before we all went our separate ways after the show.

I went to check if Rocky Horror had any rush tickets available today around noon since I saw some seats still open online. As I was walking in, a group of three women was heading in ahead of me. I waited behind them, then went up to the window to ask about rush. Before I could buy anything, they turned around and said "DO NOT buy anything!" Their fourth friend couldn't make it, they hadn't been able to find anyone else, and they just gave me the ticket. Wouldn't take a dime.

They were so incredibly kind and warm, and I ended up having such a wonderful time with them. It felt so fitting for a show like Rocky Horror, the kind of community and generosity that the cult classic brings out in people.

On a side note for those following the fan interaction discourse: our audience was incredibly quiet. No callbacks at all. So quiet, in fact, that Luke Evans was genuinely trying to get the audience to say "anticipation" with him during the number. One funny moment though: right after intermission, someone in the front mezzanine apparently took a picture, an usher loudly yelled to stop, which broke Rachel Dratch out of her narration. She paused and said "I can't hear you," which then got a few more people talking. Just a funny little chain reaction.

The whole cast was phenomenal and clearly having so much fun up there, especially Andrew and Stephanie. And all four of us were fully in agreement that Luke Evans was incredible.

Ladies from Buffalo, if you ever see this: thank you from the bottom of my heart. I wish I'd thought to grab your info before we parted ways. You made my whole day. 🖤❤️

I’m at Schmigadoon tonight and I just had to post about this because it was absolutely hilarious.

During the picnic basket scene, Alex completely went rogue and ad-libbed a joke about Sara getting nominated for a Tony. You could tell it caught her totally off guard because she immediately broke character and just started cracking up.

She could not stop laughing, and it took her a good second to recover and get back on track. The entire audience was absolutely losing it right along with her. It's so fun getting to see them genuinely having a blast on stage together.

Looking for some recommendations for shows to see with my partner. She's not the biggest musical theater fan but I'm trying to find something we'd both enjoy.

Her first introduction to musicals was Hamilton and she really liked it. Since then we've seen a few tour productions together including Hadestown, Moulin Rouge, Back to the Future, and Six. We also saw Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Death Becomes Her on Broadway.

She really liked Six and Death Becomes Her worked well for her because the story was easy to follow on its own. Where she struggles is with shows that are sung through or where a lot of context is assumed going in, like Hadestown was tough for her that way. She also gets pulled out of it when characters randomly burst into song, which I know is kind of the whole thing with musicals lol.

I personally love Broadway and am always excited to see anything, so I'm easy to please. Really just trying to find something she'd genuinely enjoy rather than just sit through. Ideally something with a clear plot, a good mix of dialogue and music, and songs that feel like they belong in the moment rather than coming out of nowhere.

Any suggestions? Would love to hear what's worked for others in a similar situation. Thanks!

Took the Citi Field Direct shuttle from Newport Centre @ Jersey City, NJ for the first time last night for the 7:10 game against the Nationals and wanted to share a detailed breakdown for anyone considering it. I looked everywhere for info before going and couldn't find much, so hopefully this helps.

The basics:

$8/person for a roundtrip ticket (bought through FEVO). You park for free at the West Garage at Newport Centre Mall near Dick's Sporting Goods, third floor. Staff gives you a parking validation ticket before you board. The pickup/dropoff is at street level of that garage. Set your GPS to 50 Mall Dr W, Jersey City, NJ 07310.

Getting there - the ride to Citi Field:

Shuttle was scheduled to depart at 4:10 PM. We officially pulled out at 4:12 with about 11 people on board. Comfortable Mercedes Benz coach bus with power outlets, reclining chair back, and clean bathroom. We hit standstill traffic on Canal Street getting through Manhattan. Didn't reach the Manhattan Bridge until 4:44, so that stretch alone ate up a solid 30+ minutes. Got through it and arrived at the Citi Field gate around 5:21. We were docked and off the bus by 5:24. So total ride time was about 1 hour and 12 minutes door to door.

The bus drops you at the Citi Field Bus Lot and you walk to the Left Field Gate. Short walk, maybe 2-3 minutes. Gates had opened at 5:40 (90 min before first pitch) so we were there with plenty of time.

The game:

Mets won 8-0. Soto hit a two-run bomb, Bichette went deep on the first pitch of the game, and Holmes was dealing on the mound. Seven-run fourth inning. Great night to be there.

Getting back - the ride home:

Game ended around 9:30. Walked back to the bus lot and the shuttle left at 9:56, which is close to the 30-minutes-after-final-out timing they advertise. Return trip was significantly faster with no traffic. Hit the Manhattan Bridge by 10:22, through the Holland Tunnel by 10:29, into Jersey City by 10:33, and back at Newport Centre at 10:44 (driver got a little lost at the end and had to do a u-turn getting back to the mall. So about 48 minutes for the return. Way better than the ride there.

Tips/things to know:

  • Get to the garage early. Staff was there and everything was clearly marked with signage.
  • The bus is first-come, first-serve seating so if you want to sit with your group, board together.
  • No items can be left on the bus - you bring everything into the stadium with you. Check the Citi Field bag policy before you go because backpacks are NOT allowed.
  • They validate your parking at Newport Centre before you board so you don't pay anything for the garage.
  • I saw someone on here mention their validation didn't work - make sure you actually get that validation ticket from staff and hold onto it. Don't lose it.
  • The ride TO the game is going to be longer than the ride back because of rush hour traffic through Manhattan. Plan accordingly and don't stress about it, they build that buffer into the departure time.
  • Download the MLB Ballpark app for walking directions from your seat back to the bus lot after the game, but there's a ton of signage pointing you to the bus yard (outside Left Field Gate).
  • Total cost for two people roundtrip was $17.98 ($16 + $1.98 in fees). Compared to $40-50 for parking at Citi Field plus tolls and gas and the headache of driving yourself, this is a no-brainer if you're coming from NJ.

Would I do it again? Absolutely. The ride there was a bit long because of traffic but that's just getting into Queens on a weekday evening. Beats sitting in that same traffic yourself while also paying for parking. And the ride home was quick. For $8/person roundtrip it's easily worth it.
