Women in Gaza say they were promised food, money or work in exchange for sexual interactions | The Associated Press

It was about a month into the war in Gaza, she said, and he promised her work, a six-month contract with an aid agency. On the day she believed she’d sign the paperwork, he drove her not to an office but to an empty apartment. He complimented her, she said, and told her to remove her headscarf.
He told her he loved her and wouldn’t force her, she said, but he also wouldn’t let her leave. Eventually, they had a sexual encounter, she said. She declined to give details of the nature of their interaction, saying she felt fear and shame.

JANUARY 2, 2025 | FLASH BRIEF

Latest Developments
Russia and Iran Conducted Targeted Disinformation Campaigns: The U.S. Treasury imposed sanctions on two entities from Iran and Russia on December 31 for their attempts to influence the 2024 U.S. election by maliciously spreading disinformation online. “The governments of Iran and Russia have targeted our election processes and institutions and sought to divide the American people through targeted disinformation campaigns,” Acting Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Bradley Smith said in the statement.
Moscow-Based Group Created Massive Network of Fake Websites: The Treasury sanctioned the Moscow-based Center for Geopolitical Expertise (CGE) and its director, Valery Mikhaylovich Korovin. Affiliated with Russia’s GRU foreign intelligence agency, CGE personnel work directly with a GRU unit to conduct “political interference operations and cyber warfare targeting the West.” The group used Generative AI to quickly create and disseminate disinformation about U.S. candidates and other hot-button issues through a “massive network of websites designed to imitate legitimate news outlets” in the lead-up to the 2024 election.
Iran’s ‘Increasingly Aggressive’ 2024 Activities: The Treasury also sanctioned the Cognitive Design Production Center, a subsidiary of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The previously little-known agency is accused by the Treasury of planning to “influence operations designed to incite socio-political tensions among the U.S. electorate … on behalf of the IRGC” since at least 2023. In August, the Office of National Intelligence, the FBI, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said that they had observed “increasingly aggressive Iranian activity” during the 2024 election cycle, which included the use of social engineering methods such as phishing to infiltrate the campaigns of both parties. One such effort in June infiltrated the email of Roger Stone, a close ally of incoming President Donald Trump, with the hackers obtaining internal documents that were sentto Trump’s opponents and multiple media outlets.

ITHACA, N.Y. — Willem Firth scored six goals and assisted on two others, and No. 4 Cornell buried Harvard with a six-goal first quarter and never looked back, rolling to a 17-8 victory Friday in the Ivy League Tournament semifinal at Schoellkopf Field. The Big Red advance to the Ivy League Championship Game on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Cornell wasted no time establishing control. After Harvard's Logan Turley converted a man-up opportunity at 12:42 of the first quarter, the Big Red rattled off five unanswered goals in less than nine minutes to lead 5-1. Firth scored his first, Ryan Goldstein scored his two, and Brendan Staub capped off the outburst.

Harvard pulled within 5-2 on an Aurandt IV goal late in the first, but Cascadden immediately answered off the ensuing faceoff to make it a 6-2 lead at the end of the opening frame.

The lead grew to 10-4 by halftime as Firth recorded three goals in the second quarter alone, including a buzzer-beater at the horn to send the Big Red into the locker room firmly in command. Goldstein finished the half with two goals and three assists, orchestrating the offense at every turn.

The second half was much of the same for the Big Red, after Harvard made it a 12-6 game with 5:07 to play in the third, Cornell rattled off five-straight goals from the 3:07 mark of the third to 10:05 in the fourth, with Firth scoring two more times and Brian Luzzi, AJ Nikolic, and Ryan Waldman finding the back of the net to seal the win.

Nikolic had a standout performance off the bench with two goals in the third quarter, and Luke Robinson, Waldman, Luzzi and Rowyn Nurry each added a goal as Cornell put 17 different scoring plays on the board spread across 10 players. Firth led the way with six goals and a pair of assists, followed by Goldstein's six points on two goals and four helpers.

Jack Cascadden was dominant at the faceoff, winning 18 of 24 draws and collecting 12 ground balls. Matthew Tullymade 11 saves over 53-plus minutes before Tim Piacentini finished with three saves.
