What Was The Inspiration for Your Latest Story?

What was the original idea that made you want to write your most recent romance story?

Was it a trope you wanted to play with, a relationship dynamic, a setting, a song, another book, a dream, a random scene that appeared in your head, or a very specific what if?

Please share with us the idea that got it all started

Where did your latest MC/main character come from?

I want to open the floor to discussing the "Behind the Scenes" of romance writing.

So, let’s talk characters today.

What was the inspiration for your latest MC?

Was it a song? Someone you observed? A trope you wanted to explore? A character type you wished you saw more often? Or was it a completely random idea that dropped into your head one day?

Which romance fandom deserves the Venn diagram treatment next?

I need nominations for the next romance fandom/author fandom, BookTok subculture, community, or reader archetype that deserves its own Venn diagram for their behavior.

Inspired by the previous thread for Haunting Adeline.

Despite the outrage, I said hey, let's just turn this into a series.

Name your picks and what generalized fandom behavior we can assign to the circles.

Author faces backlash for marketing a Nazi Officer Like your usual Morally Gray Romance MMC

Here's what we know so far, an author is facing push back over her promotion of an upcoming novel that centers on the relationship between a Nazi officer and a young Jewish woman. This post is to just highlight a debate going on in the romance space. This is not a green-light to harass or contact anyone!

Here's what we know so far

  • The book isn't out yet but she's been sharing excerpts from the story.
  • Author says its a historical fiction but is being accused of using romance author / book promotion techniques to drum up interest
  • Descriptions of the officer as a “boy” who was turned into a weapon or realized too late that he was on the wrong side of history
  • Using AI characters

Because the full manuscript is not available, the yapping currently centers on what the author has chosen to share publicly rather than on a completed reading of the novel.

Drama sourced from Has Romance Gone Too Far? by creator Rachel Oates

I thought this was perfect to bring to the community for discussion.

Questions:

  • Is the backlash premature?
  • Can a Nazi officer ever be responsibly written as the male lead opposite a Jewish woman, or does that premise cross a line regardless of execution?
  • Where is the line between humanizing a perpetrator and romanticizing or minimizing him?
