Terrible workplaces in Melbourne/victoria/in general?

This issue definitely isn’t place specific and I’m sure people can relate, but why on earth do I keep landing bad jobs? I’ve worked in hospitality and retail and have found that both are bad for workers. If it’s a family business they expect you to put in extra work finish late unpaid. Honestly I’ve found family businesses are the worst and unprofessional.

At one I was not paid any super the 3 months I was working, the next I was not allowed to change my availability at all as a casual and the last job I was made to stay 30 mins unpaid to close, and guilt tripped heavily when i requested days off (as a casual) a week in advance. My pay was also never raised after I turned 20 and when they got around to it they didn’t back pay. And pay was consistently late because my manager “hadn’t gotten around to it yet”. In an 8 hour shift I received 1 20 minute break (albeit paid).

At my new job i started yesterday, they’ve just asked us to clock out for toilet breaks. What on EARTH is going on??

Why is everyone so mad about tax?

I’ve noticed an annoyingly common theme in many of the replies in my posts; tax payers dollars.

For context, I 20F am not particularly knowledgeable on the Australia’s system of government (though I’m trying to become more knowledgeable). However I know some basics.

I have posted a couple questions on reddit which have gotten me some very angry feedback! One about taking a myki fine to court and whether it was worth it, and the second about viability of living with a romantic partner while having to declare a defacto relationship for receiving Centrelink (I’m a student).
In both scenarios multiple angry users have told me to get a real job, grow up, stop acting like I’m better than everyone who doesn’t receive Centrelink and that I’m essentially robbing them straight out of their pockets by even just considering using the court system to contest a fine. Everyone is so worried about other people using their tax!!!?

Now as someone who also pays tax, I get it! It sucks and we want it to be used for the benefit of Australia. I can absolutely understand the flaws in our system. However I can also acknowledge that my tax is going toward necessary infrastructure, towards those with disabilities, to our healthcare system and yes, to Centrelink to support those who need help! And as a student who doesn’t have financial parental support, I can tell you I would much rather be able to afford my expenses than have to rely on the tiny amount of government support that won’t even provide enough to feed me!

So why are people so mad at fellow Australians about their tax? Am I missing something? Educate me please (in a nice way hopefully)!

Maid My Day

Hi all! Has anyone ever worked for maid my day? It’s only got a couple reviews on glassdoor but they’re all honestly terrible! Whilst it seems like ideal hours and pay for me, what have you heard or experienced?

Worth pursuing disability support?

Hi all! I am currently studying a bachelor of fine arts mainly for passion. I’ve thought about many careers and studied veterinary nursing previously but switched to fine arts do do something more creative. I’ve been thinking about going into disability as I feel I have a caring nature and am not afraid of hard work (having worked a little in vetmed). Disability offers consistent work where as the arts usually doesn’t unless you’re in education. Should I pursue disability support/aged care? Or should I pursue graphic design or something? Any genuinely advice is appreciated!

Good mechanics in Melbourne?

Hi all! I’m new to Melbourne and searching for a good mechanic to get my car in for a service if possible! The only thing I’m worried about is being taken advantage of as a young female (who unfortunately knows nothing about cars). In the past I’d have my dad book it in but he isn’t in Melbourne.

Anywhere in the northern suburbs would be amazing!

Opp Shops?

Honestly correct me if I’m wrong but Opp shop pricing has sky rocketed! And I’m not talking about designer I’m talking about normal clothing being priced upwards of $10. I’m assuming it’s because volunteers are able to finally get paid (which is a good thing). But I can’t help but feel for those less fortunate than me who can’t afford to by new clothes and now not second hand either.

What’s up with doggy daycare?

I did a trial shift at a doggy daycare in Melbourne, for context, I am currently studying my cert III in animal care services, hoping to go into my next vet nursing cert. To start off with, I want to clarify that the staff were nice and to my knowledge everything was up to code. But it genuinely has me thinking how low the standard is.

To set the scene, it was in a massive open warehouse, concrete floors and two pens around maybe 5x5 meters. One for small dogs and one for big dogs. I would say there was maybe 10-15 dogs in each pen (could have been slightly more or less).

Now, when I say these dogs were anxious I mean borderline distressed. Almost all of them were highly overstimulated, very loud, and had very tense body language. Those that had separation anxiety still appeared to have it and spent the whole time whining and barking, and pacing around. There werent many toys (due to anticipated aggression which is always a potential issue when socialising dogs). And maybe one chair to offer hiding places for the dogs which is important for enrichment.

My job was to basically break up fights or aggressive behaviour which happened regularly, and give the occasional pat. I was also told to stop them barking by yelling and clapping because they had had noise complaints (duhh???).

From what I saw the attendants mainly took photos of the dogs (along with breaking up fights) and had a list of dogs names they had to take multiple photos of for owners throughout the day. The outside area was again, concrete. There was the occasional training/enrichment but didn’t seem enough.

What broke my heart was a tiny blind and deaf dog who hid shaking in the corner the entire time so as not to bump into other dogs. I wouldn’t be surprised if your dog comes home tired and happy to see its owners because it has had a big traumatic day.

Am I being dramatic? This has genuinely put me off doggy daycare for life. Again to clarify I think everything was up to standard but it felt off to me. Maybe I’m just to sensitive idk! I’m looking into reporting

Should I go?

Hi all I have secured a job interview but I’m seeing some major red flags and am wondering if I should attend. Obviously I know there is no harm in going! It’s just that this position has been advertised about every couple months. I’m not sure if this is because they can’t find anyone (which I would assume would be strange in this market) or they can’t keep an employee in the role. Any thoughts? What questions should I ask in the interview if I attend. I already have a casual events job which is quite busy in the on season and pays great.

Rant: No spare key!

I might get flamed for this but I am so frustrated! I posted recently about how my realestate agent doesn’t have a spare key to my apartment. I had my bag stolen so had to get a new key and swipe card cut which is totally fine.

Then recently I had my mum stay and she locked the door to the apartment (I don’t usually lock my door and neither do my neighbours) so when I forgot my keys and tried to get back in i couldn’t! My apartment key is restricted so i couldn’t get it cut (I think that’s also lowkey illegal too?).

My realestate agent didn’t have the spare key so i had to fork out hundreds for a locksmith. Obviously i know this is essentially my fault but it would have been lovely for my realestate agent to have a spare key. As a student it was definitely a hit to my finances. I’ve also been told to try rearrange my property inspection time to when I am home because they can’t get in. This is super annoying because I work and study and am rarely home!

Again my fault and not the end of the world just SUPER annoying.

I was in a Newsagency (edit: I removed the name of the store. Not a troll post) a while ago and overheard who I assume to be the owner of the store say something innapropriate about a customer. For context this customer seemed to be an older transgender woman.

Someone had been sitting on a bench outside and had left some blood on the seat. Whilst walking out I heard the owner say ‘he must’ve had his period on the bench’ directed at the transgender woman. Not only did I find this bizarre but incredibly disrespectful, especially directed at a customer who is contributing to the business?? Super weird.
