Transferring to RMIT

Hi, I am a current first year student who is planning to transfer to RMIT at a completely different program. I now have an offer for it. I do not enjoy my current course at my current university. And I don’t think I will be happy if I still push through it.

I’m only enrolled in two subjects. The final exams are coming soon, and I am thinking of withdrawing before then so I do not need to study for it. So, I can mentally rest and prepare also for my new course.

However, withdrawal will result in a fail in my transcript. Will this affect my enrolment to RMIT? Or my WAM/GPA in general? I’m really worried about this.

Advice regarding educational loan and final offer letter

I’m supposed to join RMIT University this July for my Masters program but I’ve suddenly run into a huge problem with my financial documents and I honestly don’t know what to do anymore.

My studies are mainly funded through my parents’ savings + an education loan from Credila. Before applying, my agents and financial advisors told me that this loan setup would work and be accepted by the university.
But now, after waiting so long in the process, the university has suddenly informed me that they do not accept non-collateral loans. This completely shocked me because if I had known this earlier, I would’ve started another process months ago.

Now the issue is:

Getting a new collateral loan will take at least another 15 days or more

After that I still need to submit everything again

Then visa processing itself may take around 4 weeks

My course starts in July, so this entire delay completely ruins my timeline. I genuinely want to attend this intake and I’ve already invested so much time, effort, and money into this process.
I’m also trying not to put additional financial pressure on my parents because arranging collateral suddenly is not easy at all.

Has anyone faced something similar with RMIT or Australian universities?

Did Credila/non-collateral loans work for anyone?

Is there any workaround, alternative financial proof, or anything I can do at this stage?

Would really appreciate any advice because I’m honestly very stressed and confused right now.

Is there a spot near campus to get lunch for under $12?

Every generic banh mi, standard noodle bowl, or basic sandwich around Melbourne Central or Swanston is around $18 this semester. Are there any student spots that don't charge a premium?

transferring from swinburne as a local student

hi there lovely people im a local first year bachelor of computer science student @ swinburne, and im curious how the process is to transfer to RMIT after this year. its much closer to me, and the clubs and social life and swinburne seem lesser than at rmit. i looked on the rmit website and it seems like i can only see if my credits get transferred AFTER i accept my offer, as a local student. I think I would only want to transfer if i get the credits for my first year studies. also, my atar and english prereq from vce were just not enough to reach the threshold to bachelor of computer science at rmit, does this limit my ability to transfer? or is it based off my current studies at swinburne?

if someone here has transferred from swin -> rmit and could explain the process to me a bit clearer than the mess of webpages i need to sift through that would be awesome

thanks!!

How safe is it to leave your stuff unattended in the RMIT reading room?

How likely is it for stuff to get stolen if I leave it in the reading room for like 5 mins? Need to quickly grab something but don’t wanna come back to my stuff disappearing on me. Is it safe? There aren't many people in the room at the moment.

Looking for advice on accommodation at RMIT (Saigon)

Hey everyone, I’m an international student joining RMIT Vietnam (Saigon South campus) this September and I had a few questions about accommodation and settling in.

Right now it’s May, so I’m trying to figure out what the normal timeline is for everything.
Main things I wanted to ask:

  1. When do most students usually finalize long-term accommodation?
    Is it better to:

- lock something in before arriving, or
come to HCMC first, stay temporarily for a week or two, attend orientation, then apartment hunt in person?

  1. How do people usually find roommates?
Are Facebook groups/WhatsApp groups the main way?

And is it common to meet potential roommates during orientation itself?

  1. Any general advice you wish you knew before moving to District 7 / Saigon South?

AI in Melbourne International Animation Festival

I've been attending the Melbourne International Animation Festival (MIAF), and I've noticed that a lot of the films have used Generative AI. As a festival with over 2000 submissions I find it really disappointing that quite a few of the films heavily use gen AI.

The festival director even openly told the theatre before screening that he was receiving complaints via email.

What really boiled my blood was hearing how the festival director spoke about student worries surrounding AI. I overheard him speaking to the volunteers who were asking about it. Clearly, some of them were students.

He was telling them things like "students complain to me in class about AI, but they all have smartphones, so they're really just hypocrits."

"Students only complain because they're worried about getting jobs, they shouldn't go into uni expecting to come out with a job. That's just the world now, and they have to get over it"

And much more.

Considering MIAF opens with a student showcase and clearly relies on students to volunteer to help run events. I feel like its a bit out of touch to so harshly criticise student worries.

I feel like festivals like this contribute to setting the tone in the industry. It doesn't seem like the best idea to alienate the next generation of submissions.

I won't be attending anymore events.

Lost Sony Over-ear Headphones

Found a pair of Sony headphones in the carpark near the main entrance to Bundoora West at about 5pm on Thurs 21st.

They look like WH-1000XM4 so pretty expensive. They’ve also got some stickers on them so if you can describe them get in touch and I’ll get them back to you. Bluetooth name is default so doesn’t give any clues either.

Couldn’t take to security as was in a rush and I’m staff so not in student fb groups etc. If you see anything around about lost headphones, please get in touch.

Cheers

Course change

Long story short, I don’t want this to be a rant/vent but I kinda need genuine advice. So just in case I’m gonna spew everything out.

I’m a first year undergraduate student, fresh out of highschool and I’m already regretting my course choice (psychology). I’m just not liking it as I thought I would, and now I dread doing anything that even remotely relates to it. I want to move into a new course (something along the lines of business/commerce/marketing/economics etc ), but, the only issue is I’m pretty much failing probably all of my classes.

I didn’t hand in an assignment worth 30% of my grade, I’ve got a 6 day overdue assignment that I haven’t even started working on. Another 2 assignments due in the coming days that I haven’t even started on.

I haven’t been able to do said assignments, since recently I haven’t been in the right mental space and struggled to get the motivation to care for myself, let alone do my assignments. I’m also not formally or professionally diagnosed with anything, so I don’t have a doctors note or anything to ‘excuse’ (don’t know if that’s the right word) myself for not doing the assignments nor do I have special considerations.

My initial plan a while ago was just to do the assignments and somehow pass(?), so next year I can change into a different course.

Regarding all this, long story short, even if I do end up failing this unit/course. Would I still be able to change courses? Or, is there any specific pre-requisites I need to do to change my course. I’m planning to go to the open day and explore around the business courses for more info as well.

Group Assignment issue with AI

Hi, I’m a 2nd year domestic student, I’m in a group assignment where I’m almost certain a large portion of the work may be heavily AI-generated, with limited original research or input. There also appear to be issues with inaccurate or potentially false references.
Additionally, one of the other members took over my section after not attending classes for weeks, and it seems that part may also have been AI-generated rather than based on original work.

The group has started arguing and both the students using AI have denied it and there is a pretty clear split between domestic and international students.

One of the international students doesn’t speak ANY English (which I had proof of as he admitted it to me over text in Chinese) , so communication has required translation, and even his apologises and messages he sends me are Ai generated.

I rely financially on a scholarship, so I’m particularly worried about anything that could put me at risk of an academic integrity issue.

I don’t want anyone to get into serious trouble, but I also want to make sure I’m protecting myself and submitting work that meets university standards. I’m not sure whether reporting this is the right step, especially with the due date in a few days, and I’m open to any advice from people who have dealt with something similar.

What would be the best way to handle this?

There needs to be a better vetting process for capstones

in recent years there are more and more people who just dont understand topics and do not care to learn them to the detriment of everyone else, these people need to be filtered by the coordinators for the cancer they are.

just a simple interview and it will be extremely obvious.

nothing i can do all i can do is vent on reddit

is there any way to change room temp in building 80?

i assume the answer is no but i figured i should ask just in case. as soon as it starts getting cold they crank the heaters up like crazy. it's 8:30 and i'm hot as balls. these rooms have no cool air flow either so it always gets so stale after a while. especially if you come to uni in winter clothes.

Laptop for architecture?

I'm looking to get into architecture in rmit next year and wanted to get some advice for a good laptop for this course. I heard that there's some pretty intensive programs, like rhino. I do have a pc at home where I can do some additional stuff, but how much modelling/intensive work would I be doing on the laptop?

Can you still work in civil with a mechanical degree?

I've been hearing this statement a lot recently, how true is it?:

"a mechanical graduate can get a civil job but a civil graduate can't work in mechanical"

to give context:

  • I think what they trying to say is "a mechanical graduate can often move into civil-adjacent roles more easily than civil graduates can move into mechanical roles"
  • I dont think they're referring to going into specialised civil fields such as drainage, environmental, dirt etc but more bridges, roads and structures
  • also assuming that the mechanical graduate did internship at companies/projects that a civil graduate would do

What are your thoughts on this statement?

And anyone whose already in a civil job, do you work with colleagues who did a mechanical engineering degree but were able to work in civil?

Study room squatters are unreal

I booked a study room today, turned up exactly at my time and when I looked through the glass, a bloke was sitting there fully settled in. He really messed up the place with his eatables. I knocked and showed him my booking on my phone and somehow I still got that annoyed look back like I’d just interrupted something important when he was not even studying, but was watching Netflix. I followed the process, and now I’m standing there feeling like I’m kicking someone out of their own house. Why am I the one feeling awkward here😭 and instead of saying sorry for wasting my 15 mins, he was telling me that I don't have manners and gave me a look before leaving. Like seriously??
